Of course you “deal” with the Taliban. No group is monolithic. There are members of that group with whom we may be able to reason with and come to a mutual understanding. It is far better to have some of them on our side and/or neutral then ALL of them as enemies. Turning some of them could potentially yield very important intelligence information that can be used against the rest.

Gen. Petraeus learned this and applied it in the “surge”. One of the reasons, and perhaps the main reason, that the surge has been successful is because we reached out to the Sunni insurgents who had “American blood” on their hands and made it more appealing for them to work with us rather than against us. Hard liners like Dumbsfeld and that Dick, Cheney, didn’t want to “negotiate with terrorists” and, as a result, we wasted years beating our heads against a wall and took unnecessary casualties. The concept is called “divide and conquer”. Guys like Rummy like to quote Sun Tzu, the great Chinese military thinker/philosopher, out of context. It’s too bad that they never read his works.

Don’t think people are blaming Obama for the cutting off of heads, at least not yet. But, people have very little confidence that Obambi will do anything to stop it. He and Nancy are busy with a much more important agenda.

There may be members of the Taliban who disagree with what these butchers did. These are the people that we should approach. Assuming that “they” are all bad guys that we should try to kill them all and “let their God sort them out” is self defeating. Petraues did not consort with Taliban-like operatives. No comparison.

Nothing is black and white. This whole mess is composed of various shades of grey. “Taliban-like” operatives may be our most valuable assets in an area where MOST of the people are “Taliban-like”. If it helps us find the people in this video, what is the harm in trying?

A lot of these Sunni tribal chiefs were considered to be our bitter enemies. Now they are fighting with us. There is precedence for this sort of tactic and it works.
