DVD Disclaimer: ‘Sesame Street’ Classics ‘May Not Suit Needs of Today’s Pre-School Child’

"Sesame Street" is a childhood favorite around the world. However, there are now concerns that Oscar is too grouchy and the Cookie Monster needs a better diet.

there are always going to be ‘grouchy people’ and people who do not eat a healthy diet…but this does not make them ‘bad’ people…we accept people for what they are, not who they are…

amazing. most kids are not only allowed — but encouraged — to sit brain-dead for hours in front of all sorts of screen-media these days (only to make their parents lives easier) yet nary a word of warning is offered.
Protecting your child from media, and all of its subtle unintended influences, for as long as possible is the best gift you can give to your child.

this is SO stupid…………

thanks a lot hippies

you ruin EVERYTHING………….

I guess these DVDs are only for stoners, because they’re the only adults who could sit through an entire episode of Sesame Street:

Hippies put the “ellout” in Sellout!

They are the most patronizing group of people ever! Even more so than any bible thumper.
This idea of “listen we did all the drugs and experimenting when we were younger, we know what a dead end street those things can lead to. So you shouldn’t do them. We know what’s good for you. We were there, we did it already, so now you don’t have to. So just take our word, drugs are bad ok?”

Makes me sick!

Even Sesame Street is too politically-incorrect for the sissified ex-hippies of today??? How pathetic!

Maybe Oscar and Cookie Monster are too “rough” for some sensitive losers, but I’ll happily show them to my kids anyday vs. that whiny muppet Elmo that Sesame Street’s been hawking to the masses for the past decade!

“Quick… cover the kids’ eyes! Cookie Monster eating a COOKIE!!!”

“How HORRIBLE! Let’s read them ‘Sally’s Got Two Mommies.’ and then watch some Oprah…”

Idiots. >:(

Is this to suggest that, as long as we keep them away from the classics that we grew up on, that our children will turn out better than we did? I don’t think Gen X, Y, or Z have/will prove that out. I’m assuming they’ll need to put similar warnings on Schoohouse Rock because it doesn’t teach ebonics, revisionist history, or liberal politics and The Electric Company because it’s just Sesame Street for elementary age students.

Lonewolf   January 9th, 2008 - 3:01 pm

All Sesame Street ever accomplished was to teach kids to watch TV.

I am so damn tired of the “nanny govt” and related groups. I am tired of Dennis Hopper doing commercials-still thinking he’s 25. I am tired of hippie’s being afraid of their impending mortality (no a pill WILL NOT make you live longer). I am tired of hippies who can’t “get it up” without a pill….Hey! If you didnt do so many drugs as a kid, you might not have that problem!

The hippies are (to a large extent) the reason our society is in the crapper! Our schools are all about “feeling good”,dont “offend” anyone.

If WW2 were to have happened with our present population, we would either be speaking German or being lampshades!

I will not miss the passing of the last hippie!!
God speed them there!

Older Sesame Street shows were targeted to a kindergarten/first grade audience. But the show has changed its demographic: it’s become younger (pre-school age). It makes perfect sense that the producers would want to warn parents that the older shows were not written with pre-schoolers in mind.

eslo   January 10th, 2008 - 5:31 pm

i watched as a child and I’m and obese grouchy jerk…please take heed of the warning people!

Relax   January 10th, 2008 - 11:25 pm

Uh I’m not sure if this disclamer is about protecting children.

“these early Sesame Street episodes may not meet the needs of today’s pre-school children”

Sound more like he saying ” don’t let your kids watch this stuff, your kid is smarter than you were when you were a kid”

Also it seems like everyone seems like they are always being attacked. Do we need another generation like that?

eric Schodde   January 16th, 2008 - 8:41 am

this is INSANE, believe it or not kids
are not morons they know that Oscar
the Grouch is not real etc. The people
that think this is to much for todays
kids are the same people who were picked
last at every sport and also want dodge
ball banned because someone might get
their feelings hurt. The Peace love
Hippie generation needs to go and fast.

Lisa Hawkins   January 16th, 2008 - 11:19 am

The hippie generation was the last nail on the coffin of a declining western civilization. They were obnoxious in their teens and 20s then, they’re even more obnoxious in middle and old age now! I know – I was there! And many of the hippie persuasion (even if they didn’t live the full “lifestyle”) made life miserable for many of us with their degenerate thinking. The word “DE-GENERATE” really applies here! An upside-down world is their legacy to this very day.

Justin   January 17th, 2008 - 2:20 pm

I was born in 74 and never watched this show. I guess I was more worried about dying in a nuclear war, then what some stupid gay puppets were saying.
Kids these days must be overwhelmed with all the stuff on t.v. The wars, the terrorists, the criminals/illegals running amuck, etc. Noticed the horror movie previews on tv, lately? Do we REALLY need to see that kind of stuff?? No wonder each generation is more and more messed up. Thanks MTV!

What is Ernie scrubbing in the bath?

Kuko   January 18th, 2008 - 1:40 pm

I think it is just a joke… to encourage the kids to watch this show. You know, the forbidden fruit tastes the best!

Anon   January 19th, 2008 - 11:14 pm

This thread is hysterical. You are all so desperate to rag on “hippies” that you ignore the fact that this story has nothing to do with them. They may have been a popular target when you were young, but ranting about them now makes you look like you belong in a retirement home. Keep on stockpiling food in your bomb shelter and reading those John Birch magazines, guys. The rest of the world has moved on from the battles of the 1960s, so you might seem a little anachronistic–but hey, conservatives by definition are stuck in the past, so, no big deal.

The Truth   January 20th, 2008 - 5:52 am

You can thank the lawyers for the state of our culture.

Elmo the Great   January 21st, 2008 - 3:50 pm

The truth is this is political correctness at its worst. I’d gladly let my two kids watch an old Sesame Street episode. The new episodes are the ones my kids won’t see without supervision.

The public broadcasting of today feels the need teach MY kids that its ok for kids to have two daddys who love each other. No thanks! I also find their annoying their insistence to include environmentalist wacko ideas.

What happened to just teaching ABC’s and numbers? Do the producers of this garbage (no offense Oscar) really think I need their help in teaching their brand of morality and worldview?
