What an idiot!!! Just goes to show you what kind of “educated” people we have running our government. And Obama doesn’t know how many states we have either. He and his pal must have gone to the same school. As a teacher I find it appalling that “suppose to be educated people” can’t use correct grammar or get their geographical information correct.
J.D.December 16th, 2008 - 2:07 pm
Well, Obama will not be president anyhow considering he has not proven his constitutional eligibility.
So no worries.

It irritates me no end when I hear these dimwits forget the objective case. It’s almost as bad as “shtreet” and “shtrong”.

This should surprise no one. The Baby Boomers and all those following them are, for the most part, horribly and woefully uneducated, and totally unprepared to compete in a world economy We’ve become a nation of dummies as we continue our slide towards third worldom.
Me and my students aint finding nothing wrong with his grammer.

The man is lost in a grammarless cavern and me hopes when he misused “I” he didn’t neglect to capitalize it.
Face it folks, the two-year-olds have taken over the White House. Get the diapers out. An arrogant pack of dumbells and stooges rule the world.

This buffoon compounds the error by reading the mistake from a written text. Clearly, he is ignorant of basic English, doesn’t know either the objective case, or the nominative case, and can’t genuinely be counted on to do anything other than squander and misuse taxpayer dollars. But if he can’t edit the language, and can’t speak it, he’ll probably fit right in with the other clowns in Washington who are deftly maneuvering us into a depression. Ralph L. Seifer, Long Beach, California.

Keep Up To Date on the black Prophets tangled legal troubles EVERY DAY HERE:
As the object of the verb “gave”, “my sister and I” should be “my sister and me”.
When “my sister and I” is used as the subject of the sentence, as in “My sister and I voted for an egotistical, corrupt, windbag of change and his Chicago cronies”, then usage of “my sister and I” is correct.

A little research finds the following:
1)Arne Duncan (born November 6, 1964)
2)Duncan was raised in Hyde Park, Chicago.
3)Duncan attended the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. He then graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in sociology in 1987. His senior thesis, for which he took a year’s leave to do research in Kenwood, in inner-city Chicago, was entitled The values, aspirations and opportunities of the urban underclass. Though unpublished, it was later cited by other authors.
4)Duncan has extensive experience in educational policy and management, but has not been a teacher.
5)He currently resides with his Australian wife, Karen, and his two children in Hyde Park.
6)Mayor Richard M. Daley, appointed Duncan to serve as CEO of Chicago Public Schools on June 26, 2001
So, William Ayers is a neighbor and Barry Hussein and all the rest of this clique’ all vote at the same polling place in Hyde Park.
Question: What make this guy qualified?
Answer: Nothing, this is Nepotism, the Chicago Way of Politics. And he graduated from Harvard.
Smell anything funny?

We can blame no one else but the teachers who refuse to put across to the students that speaking English correctly is the right way to go. I was taught by Catholic nuns and proper grammar was a very large part of my education. This is not so today. My own five children do not have all the rules down and are constantly asking Mom if this is the right way to use a certain word or phrase. How sad because grammatically correct speech tells so much about a person. I hope this error comes to the attention of our educational facilities.

I’m a conservative, high-positioned character with a doctorate who occasionally makes the same mistake when I ramble on without thinking. My mother has always been quick to point out the error by saying “He gave it to I???” So, cut Duncan some slack. There will be enough reason to criticize him in the future about matters of substance. His error here was forgiveable, and I bet he won’t make it again!

Remember the David Letterman bit where they play some inspiring clip from FDR (insipring), then from Kennedy (inspiring), then W (screws up a sentence)?
Gee, do you think Letterman is ever going to do one in which the Messiah is at a large hall last summer, and the transcript reads (almost literally): “Now…now…now…hold on…hold on…but…but…but…but…hold on…now hold on…wait…wait…but…but…
It is a very funny clip. Even the Messiah can easily screw up. My opinion of Letterman will rise from a “0″ when he plays that clip. Not holding my breath.

After his term as Secretary of Education, Bill Bennett produced two fine anthologies: “The Book of Virtues,” and “The Book of Moral Compass.”
That was in 1995. Now they graduate from Harvard, move to Chicago as the head of education and they can’t even, uh, construct a sentence.

Minnesota,
Yes, we all butcher the English language, in word and in print, but when you are NOT speaking extemperanously, and are reading from a prepared text, then it is a different story. I taught my kids to drop the “My sister and” part, and if it made no sense to say I then use me. I left it for their teachers to explain the cases, but this was when they were very young. As for this not being news, yes, it is, in a way. Some of you may be unaware, but as someone posted above, a certain Dan Quayle was excoriated, and had his entire career mocked, by spelling “potato” with an “e” at the end. He wasn’t the SoE-elect, so I guess we expect higher standards from someone who is presumed to be. Have you all already forgotten the bashing S. Palin took for her run-on sentences when she was just free speaking? Obama is also not the great speaker we hear he is. He is charismatic when he speaks, but he is not a great speaker. He often uses the wrong tenses, stutters terribly, and runs his sentense together. I think he is an interesting speaker, just not a great one.

NEWS FLASH…Instead of English being the “official langauge” of the United States, Citizens, we in the Obama Administration and the Department of Education are please to announce the following:
EBONICS will be the “official language” and be used at all public meetings, memos, press conferences and foreign policy discussions as of 1/20/2009.
Description:
A term created by a group of white scholars, Ebonics may be defined as “the linguistic and paralinguistic features which on a concentric continuum represent the communicative competence of the West African, Caribbean, and United States slave descendant of African origin. It includes the various idioms, patois, argots, idiolects, and social dialects of black people” especially those who have adapted to colonial circumstances. Ebonics derives its form from ebony (black) and phonics (sound, the study of sound) and refers to the study of the language of black people in all its cultural uniqueness.
And as the Secretary of Education, and Harvard Educated I KNOW MORE THAN YOU DO so accept it you Useful Idiots.
Yes, it is such a tragedy that the well-spoken President Bush, and his highly tuned use of the English language is finally at an end. oh well, so what?

This creep follows Ayers’ ideas on Communist education for indoctrinating children..He supports giving sex ed to 6 year olds where Gay sex is (fun!).He supports taking Christmas away from Catholic and Christian kids.He supports taking kids to Muslim centers so they can be brain washed by Christian and Jew hating Islamic Imams.
He is owned by the Far Left Teacher’s Unions. He is against all the reforms made by the bush administration..(No Child Left behind and Teachers taking exams etc…)
He supports revisionist Liberal history books…he is another unqualified liberal Obama bum kisser…Just as Obama is not unqualified to be anything…let alone President.

YES, THE ED SECRETARY NEEDS TO KNOW PROPER ENGLISHDecember 16th, 2008 - 9:47 pm
Yes, it IS an issue. The Secretary of Education ought to know how to speak proper English.
He should have said, “GAVE MY SISTER AND ME”… “Gave” is the verb; “my sister and me” = direct object. Use “me” for the objective case, not “I.”
This is BASIC ENGLISH.
It is because of LOUSY TEACHING that nobody under 35 or 40 even knows how to speak English or write or spell any more in the United States! We do not need more semi-literates standing up as ROLE MODELS. We need people who know how to use proper ENGLISH who will act as good role models for those who are being educated in America. The more we hear improper English usage, the more engrained it becomes in our consciousness.
Almost everyone on TV nowadays will say “so and so and I” even when it is incorrect, because they apparently are under the misconception that it is somehow impolite to use the word “me” ! Shows what lousy education they have gotten–and many who routinely do this are news anchors and telecasters.

In 2007, only 17 percent of eighth graders tested at or above grade level in reading in Chicago Public Schools – the school system administered by Arne Duncan since 2001.
According to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) report for 2007, Chicago public schools have consistently performed below the national average during Duncan’s tenure.
The report measures students at the fourth and eighth grade levels in the subjects of reading, math, science, and writing, and ranks them at below basic, basic, proficient, or advanced levels.
Nationally, Chicago is the third largest school district with over 408,000 students. Its budget for 2007-2008 was $4.6 billion, according to information released by Chicago Public Schools. $862 million of that was supplied by the federal government.
Under Duncan, Chicago Public Schools spent $10,555 per pupil, with $9,488 going toward education-related expenses in 2007.
So it seems that the big problem with public education isn’t that we are not throwing enough money at it.
