Anti-Religious Display At Washington State Capitol Raises Eyebrows

KING: With a nod to the winter solstice - the year's shortest day occurring in late December - the placard reads: "At this season of the Winter Solstice may reason prevail. There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds."

Organized Atheism has just as much right to be presented as any other religion.

Nature worshiper   December 2nd, 2008 - 6:29 pm

True, atheism has the same privilege and right as the organized religions to have a display since atheism is actually a nature worship religion. The sun, the moon, the earth, the wind, trees, etc, etc.

FANTASTIC!! FINALLY, MY BELIEFS ARE BEING REPRESENTED AFTER 1700 YEARS OF OPPRESSION AND DEATH THREATS (MANY OF WHICH WERE CARRIED OUT) BY CHRISTIANITY. IN A FAIR FIGHT, ONE WHOSE RULES ARE CRITICAL ANALYSIS AND REASON, RELIGION LOSES EVERY SINGLE TIME.
THE GUY SAID “NOTHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO” IN REGARDS TO DEATH AND AN ALLEGED “AFTERLIFE”. CORRECT. WHAT IT MEANS IS YOU SHOULD ENJOY THIS LIFE ALL THE MORE. I DO. SEX ISN’T DIRTY, I WASN’T BORN SINFUL AND I’M NOT GUILTY OF ANYTHING! WHAT I AM IS…TRULY FREE! YOU PROBABLY WOULDN’T UNDERSTAND.

Atheism is not a religion…
Atheist’s believe, as I do that there is no SUCH entity that has control over mankind.

It has nothing to do with the sun or the moon or any other environmental issue…

Atheism is about the lack of any order of existence in our world, rather than the typical human/primate notion, that seems to hinge all existence on some type of imaginary supernatural ORDER…

The idea that an adult believes in a god should be reason for a mental evaluation…and to have their voting, reproductive, and literacy abilities severely curtailed.

A recent Tim Folger article in Discover catalogs how physicists know that our universe is designed specifically for the existence of life. Because these same physicists cannot accept creation as a viable option, they are beginning to give credence to the multiverse theory, which cannot be proven.

http://discovermagazine.com/2008/dec/10-sciences-alternative-to-an-intelligent-creator/?searchterm=multiverse

Biologists study life all around them, but also believe in the unproven theory of evolution.

These atheists are not completely free from religion themselves.

*sarcasm* But at least they are tolerant of Christianity and Judaism aren’t they! *sarcasm*

Merry CHRISTmas everyone.

organized atheism?

I thought true atheism didn’t believe in a supreme being/beings and when they die you just rot, no soul, no afterlife, no heaven, no hell and thus no consequences for actions done while living except for those deemed by law

if you believe in the sun, moon, earth etc doesn’t that make you a naturalist, wiccan or pagan?

as for organized atheism…that seems to be an oxymoron for to organize means that you have a set of “rules” to follow and thus you are a follower in the beliefs that there is no supreme being ie to organize then becomes a religion, cult or sect of non-belief
so to be a “true atheist” you would have to dismiss all thought of any religion and just drift through life willy-nilly and not making a judgment on those that do because to judge a believer means that you recognize religion and therefore have doubts in atheism

huh?
yes, it doesn’t make sense to me either so I place my belief in God and don’t have to waste my thoughts trying to understand the philosophy

People, get a grip, the holidays for December are Hanukkah and Christmas. Atheists, nothing is taken away from your beliefs by others celebrating their beliefs. But as usual, oh-so-politically-correct Washington State, has managed to negate the holiday season for those of us who do believe. ATHEISTS, if you don’t believe, fine. But for the rest of us, leave us to enjoy what is dear to us.

We allow other religions, and atheists, to practice their form of religion but the official religion of America is…Christian and that is what we celebrate…Christian holidays…always have…always will!

We are not Buddhist, Islam or anything else…none of these leaders founded on country on these principles.

Our founding fathers were “Christians”…and we have been a “Christian” nation since our inception.

So if you don’t want to live within our parameters of your freedom to worship as you choose…perhaps you should try another country that is atheist…try…say…Cuba!

There is on our UNnatural world! This sort of advocating of total materialism is just a lot of big talk, and we wouldn’t be hearing any such talk in the middle of an 8.5 earthquake. As long as life goes along without too many problems, it’s still possible to imagine a life without a spiritual dimension, but just let some insurmountable catastrophe strike, and where is the possibility of life without God? No, no, this doesn’t work, and sometimes it takes some years of maturity and some chastening experiences to see that it doesn’t work.

This world would be a much better place if there was no religion. religion is the source of wars, death, intolerance, bigotry and fairy tales. If there was a so called god, all he/she would need to do is come down to earth just once and show him/herself. We all know that will never happen. If you religious folks can accept that the world will be a much better place.

Richard Terrell   December 2nd, 2008 - 9:41 pm

John, when did I ever use the use the word “hate”? I don’t hate the man. I pity him. Any time those of us with faith in God defend our position, we are called hateful. That just doesn’t compute. Either the bible is true, or it isn’t. My faith and millions of Christian martyrs would say their faith in God is worth dying for. If you don’t believe in God, that’s the wonderful thing about America. You are free to be wrong. Christians won’t hate you for expressing your opinion. No one will put you in prison. God wants willing followers, not mind numbed robots that don’t know what they believe or why they believe it.

Keith Bradbury   December 2nd, 2008 - 9:52 pm

Umm, God did come down and show himself.

He was born as a baby. Was crucified on a cross by religious people (the Sanheidran), a post-modern athiest (Mr. “What is Truth” Pontius Pilate), and a bunch of polytheists (Roman Soldiers). He told his followers to put away their swords, beat their swords into plowshares, and love their enemies.

No one listened then, do you think they will now?

That is an insult.

Face it…
You fall victim to their hate as well…
If you don’t “this and that” your going to hell.
If I told you I was goig to torture your children for whatever reason you would fight me for their protection….
Why would you allow, give credance to a group who proposed to speak on behalf of “god” to throw your children into the fire pit????
Because you really don’t believe it.

You don’t believe most of the bible….you pick and choose…don’t you Terril…
Otherwise you would stone your children….

It always amazes me that the Christians are accused of hate when it is the atheist in this post that have accused the christians of hate. Christianity was founded on love not hate. Jesus said the first and formost commandment was to love….to love God and then to love your neighbor.

Why is it that anyone other than a Christian can openly express themselves in any realm and not be accused of anything? But woe to the Christian when they stand up and say a word about their belief.

Look UP! Your redemption is close.

If God doesn’t exist then man is the final judge. If a man chooses to rob rape and murder, athiests should have no problem with such behavior. If there is nothing beyond this earthly life, pain, suffering, love, kindness mean nothing. Athiests should never file law suits or expect any consideration from anyone because to them, there is no higher authority than man. What ever man choses to do is right. Fortunately that is not the case, thank GOD!

A speeding pickup rear-ended a woman’s sedan on the South Side on Friday morning and sheriff’s officials say the driver said it was Jesus’ will because the other motorist was not “driving like a Christian.”

The bizarre incident that shut down southbound U.S. 281 above the Medina River happened about 7:25 a.m.

“He just said God said she wasn’t driving right, and she needed to be taken off the road,” said Lt. Kyle Coleman of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the pickup was identified in a Sheriff’s Office news release as Michael E. Schwab, 52, of Blooming Grove.

Schwab told first responders at the scene that “the other vehicle was not driving like a Christian and it was Jesus’ will for him to punish the car,” according to the release.

The 35-year-old woman was driving her sedan north when the pickup struck her vehicle. Schwab told deputies he was driving faster than 100 mph at the time, Coleman said.

To those arguing that a “true” Atheist would have no morals -

Don’t be upset that we don’t need a fairy tale to have moral standards. The Flying Spaghetti Monster is as believable as Xianity. Your buy-bull has been translated so many times is resembles nothing of the original text. Mythologies give the masses reasons to behave the way they know they should. It’s Evolution, you don’t mess with the pack.

Xmas has been commercialized to the point that it has lost all religious value. It was a holiday before Xianity was invented, you have to share it with everyone. Nobody complains during Easter, now do they?

God did come down to Earth. After Christ died on the cross you have to believe with faith. No more burning bushes and the what not. Read your Bible before you make stupid comments.

I’m a Christian that believes in “shaking the dust from my shoes”. I don’t have to like Liberals, Muslims and other scum ba**. Christians have a couple of big advantages. They can pray to God and they can be forgiven of sins.

What I do or do not do is between my God and I. You have nothing but that is all right with me. If you don’t believe and nothing happens fine. If I believe and nothing happens I have lived a good life. But I do believe.

Don   December 3rd, 2008 - 11:28 am

Mark,

The Flying Spaghetti Monster did come down to Earth, and He is still here! After He touches you with His Noodly Appendages you have to believe, you simply don’t need faith. Read the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster before you make stupid comments.

I’m a Pastafarian that believes in “shaking the dust from my shoes”. I don’t have to like Xians, Conservatives or others. Pastafarians have a couple of big advantages, first we get fresh beer from our volcanoes in Heaven, while you get stale beer. Our stripper factory is also *much* better.

What I do or do not do is between my God and I. You have nothing but that is all right with me. If you don’t believe and nothing happens fine. If I believe and nothing happens I have lived a good life. But I do believe. May His Noodly Goodness touch you.

What the Constitution says is irrelevant. All that matters is this: Who has the biggest guns, the willingness to use them and the ability to aim at the right targets? Arms, Attitude and Ability. Triple A.

That’s the problem with Americans. They love to debate too much about too many things. And they end up doing nothing.

crazy forrest   December 3rd, 2008 - 2:50 pm

WOW Jonathan… you need to check yourself buddy.

While your assessment of the natural condition is correct, the reason we have society is to avoid that sort of thing.

Society is a foundation of rational constraints that we all agree to in order to avoid the sort of senseless violence your method would provoke. There are a lot of people that seem to have lost that message on both sides, although it seems that the Atheist section is responding more than provoking it.

If you don’t understand that someone is gonna have to get you some help.

REM   December 3rd, 2008 - 3:50 pm

Okay, several things:
1. What? Where’s the ACLU, the lawyers, I mean, we can’t set up a manger, but this can be up?
2. Here we go with an enormous strawman:
“Oh no, the Christians are being intolerant!!!”
WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! Guess what, you say you’re tolerant, but you’re being just as intolerant to our beliefs! Christianity is the only ‘tolerant’ religion in the world. We’ll accept you no matter your race, gender, age, occupation, or past.
3. Enough of the F.S.M., that is getting to be one of the biggest blasphemies of our time. It serves no purpose whatsoever except to mock God, who will not be mocked.
4. Real Christianity is the most believable religion in history, no one has or ever will prove the Bible or Christ wrong. Nope, they’ll just resort to strawmen.
Look, read the Bible yourselves, you won’t be able to discern as much without the Holy Spirit, but you’ll see it doesn’t contradict and it doesn’t lie.

Jonathan   December 3rd, 2008 - 4:10 pm

Hey Crazy Forrest,

I point out the inevitable conflict that is going to come in this American culture war. I am not necessarily advocating anything here. So, there is no need to get all excited and upset about someone who seems to be “breaking out” of your worldview of multiculturalism.

Man by nature uses force to impose laws on other men. So, when social forces come against one another in mutual states of incompatibility, they will clash until one or both are destroyed. But, always in history, the dominant philosophy rules until such time as it is overturned.

Don   December 3rd, 2008 - 4:21 pm

REM -

I find your mocking of the Flying Spaghetti Monster to be blasphemes too. Thankfully He doesn’t mind being mocked as He knows you have been led astray.

I’ve read three versions of the Bible (KJV, NIV, TLB) as well as studying translations of specific passages from the Greek and Hebrew texts. Get off your high horse. I would be more than happy to give you examples of contradictions, misleading translations, and outright fabrications if you’d care to debate someone that has extensive knowledge of the Xian mythology.

Unfortunately by your Holy Spirit comment I can tell you are a Pentecostal, they can rarely do more than merely parrot when they’re not jumping up and down spouting gibberish. Pentecostals believe everyone else, including other Xian sects, are going to Hell; it’s extremely difficult to debate someone with such a concrete belief system. I leave the offer open, regardless.

I pray that you will find the GOd of eternal life. heaven hell your choice. they dont change. makes me sad to read people who think theres not a God that loves them. my tears are for you:(

Ted   December 3rd, 2008 - 5:43 pm

My Christianity isn’t effected one bit. I love the Lord and I will continue to be tollerant to all people. Even those who aren’t tollerant.

Dustin   December 3rd, 2008 - 7:22 pm

I’m tolerant of all people. We are all essentially athiests to everyone else’s god, I just happen to believe in one less god than most people (zero).

There are just too many contradictions on a fundamental level for any one religion to be “right”. The evolution of the church’s beliefs to fit the modern environment (Catholics used to burn astronomers alive who said the sun was a star and it didn’t revolve around the earth).

The fact that people can honestly believe that their path to enlightenment can be based on geographic disposition. (i.e. If you were born in the U.S., a predominantly Judeo-Christian society, you are much more likely to be a Judeo-Christian for that fact alone, NOT on any free thought or personal beliefs.

Why does such a benevolent god allow bad things to happen? Why does he extort faith through fear of hell? How can he be willing to cast half the world into hell, or let bad things happen to good people? A religious person might argue that humans can’t hold a god to the same standards that we hold ourselves to. “Good” to us might not be “Good” to him. But then what does that say about god’s definition of “Eternal Life”? You can’t just throw out our definition of good and expect all of our other standards for god to be accurate.

You are affirming the might makes right maxim.
I fully agree with your point, but you might wanna preface what you say just a little bit.

Armed conflict is largely unproductive and stupid… Inevitable, but stupid.

Despite having the mental capacity to achieve greater benefits for all involved, humans seem to be stuck in a primitive mind-set where conflict and superstition are the first reactions to situations where something is not understood.

Personally I don’t like any of you talking monkeys: I’d hardly consider myself biased or multicultural.

If people think that gods have human babies and so forth…and that there was a giant ship full of every beast….and that people can go around healing others with a mere touch or prayer. honestly. it is pure nonsense and will be replaced at some point by another equally ridiculus belief system. i think the comments made here are very viable. people have to rationalize things they can’t understand. if your child asks why the sun comes up you say god wants it that way.

xianity has been a scurge on this earth since its conception. humans have been on earth roughly 200,000 years (assuming you believe the third rock is a tad older than 6k years!!!) and during that time, including now, they have made every attempt to squash science. now they want to control the research on stem cells because precious few xians, if any, understand the concept of conception. what is a sustainable life? it’s certainly not an embryo. so many of them are destroyed every year in fertility clinics. must be murder, right?

why would god wait for 98k years to reveal himself and his kid? makes no sense. he would have had control from the onset.

hear me now: TODAY’S RELIGION IS TOMORROW’S MYTHOLOGY!

churches in my area had signs out saying ‘ask god how to vote.’ what a terrifying idea that is! they are so hung up on abortion and gay rights that they seem to forget the war(s) and the financial crisis and so on. no, let’s vote for the idiot who panders to our silly myths about right and wrong.

who has wronged more than the xians, anyway? not many. utterly nonsense. it’s a scurge. if i prayed, it would be for no religion! and the world will live as one…feels good to unload on these people, now i’m going to read a liberal publication and go to bed.

Truth is !   December 3rd, 2008 - 10:50 pm

Truth is the difference between this display and a christmas tree of manger scene is that the tree or manger does not attack or say anything against those who dont believe.

Don   December 4th, 2008 - 12:45 am

Truth is -

Atheists don’t worship idols like the religious folk. A sign stating his beliefs is really the only reasonable display he could make. A Flying Spaghetti Monster display would work, but the guy interviewed didn’t seem to have much of a sense of humor. It would also need a sign explaining things to the uneducated though, so…

The sole reason that sign is there is due to Xians demanding Government space to promote their mythology. It’s not the idols that bother us, it’s the location. Keep your fairy tale in your church or your home and you won’t hear a peep from us.

Duncan   December 4th, 2008 - 10:36 am

Would this have gone on if it was placed next to a Menorah?

REM   December 4th, 2008 - 3:54 pm

Jeez-
-Yeah, name a few of those people that actual Christians have harmed.
-Ummm, I have no idea what you are talking about in your first statement.
-You made a circular arguement. You mocked those who believe the earth is young and then blamed God for not revealing Himself in your ‘old’ timeframe.
-The ‘church’ is the ’state’s’ conscience, we are to be concerned on issue the Bible speaks of above all else, less our country lose the soul it’s so close to the brink of losing.
-Yeah, hears something you won’t hear in your liberal publications, Christians are being persecuted. It is at the worst levels in history!
-Also, there’s going to be a one-world government and we, thankfully, won’t be here to see it. A little message for all who haven’t turned to Christ by then, millions disappearing from around the world is the Rapture. It will try to be dismissed, disproven, but it’s in the Bible.

Now, Don-
-No, I’m not a pentacostal. You don’t have to be one to believe in the Holy Spirit. He’s part of the Godhead, so yeah, kind of hard not to.
-List your contradiction, I’m waiting.
-Your right, we can’t through out the definition of good. However, God does have a different standard than man, it’s called absolute perfection.
-God’s going to deal with evil, it’s His grace & mercy that stops Him from doing it now.
-People should be scared of Hell, it is eteranl separation from God and every quality of Him. Love, peace, rest, joy gone leaving only the opposite.
-Bad things tend to happen to ‘good’ people for basically three reasons:
1. They’re not as ‘good’ as they seem.
2. It’s a test from God to make them stronger or to bring people to Him.
3. The devil…what else to I need to say.
-People choose to reject God, but they still must face judgement after death as all men must. The true Christian has realized that nothing he has done or can do himself can make himself perfect in God’s eyes. God demands absolute perfection, the only thing truly good in His all-seeing eyes.
That’s the difference between true Christianity and other religions. People either accept that Christ died for their sins and paid their penalty or they try to make it into Heaven on their own, which no one can.

MANGER: A Bit of FOOD for THOUGHT   December 4th, 2008 - 4:50 pm

Jesus was born in a MANGER.

MANGER is French for “TO EAT.”

A MANGER is a place for straw or feed for cows to eat.

JESUS was born in a BIN where FOOD is kept, for BRUTE ANIMALS to dine on, to NOURISH them.

JESUS instituted the Sacrament of HOLY COMMUNION, in which he says, ‘TAKE EAT, THIS IS MY BODY… THIS IS MY BLOOD.’

JESUS in both his BIRTH and DEATH was giving us highly symbolic language and three-dimensional images to convey the TRUTH of WHY HE CAME TO EARTH:

TO PROVIDE SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT AND ETERNAL LIFE TO ALL THOSE WHO WOULD BELIEVE IN HIS SACRIFICE TO SAVE THEM…from their BRUTE existence.

Merry Christmas to all, and may our towns and city halls all DARE to display the Sacred MANGER, which is genuine “a secret code” that conveys the above MESSAGE to the earnest, sincere heart and mind of humankind.

“TAKE, EAT…”

———–

MANGER:
n. A trough or an open box in which feed for livestock is placed.

[Middle English, from Old French mangeoire, from mangier, to eat, from Latin mandūcāre, from mandūcō, glutton, from mandere, to chew.]

:-)

Our thread is a pointless discussion.

The only striking thing that I see in your “worldview” is the characteristic of appeasement. And, I get bored very quickly with appeasers.

Despite the appeasers admonitions to the contrary, some things are worth fighting and dying for. Not every fight is unnecessary or avoidable It is unfortunate that it is NECESSARY to fight and die sometimes – but that is the nature of this world we live in as you described. There is no substitute against tyrants and tyranny except resistance.

Jonathan here. Allow me to shine the cold light of reality on all the anti religion bigots here, as they spread the brainwashing on behalf of their college professors.

1. Atheism is a ridiculous position, as ridiculous as any fundy religion. There is no way to prove that God doesn’t exist.

2. Trying to end run around point 1 above, by claiming that you “don’t have to prove a negative” isn’t going to wash. You can’t prove God doesn’t exist, especially if you “had to.”

3. Falsely asserting that all religions are evil, unscientific, contradictory, foster backwardness, blah, blah blah… has nothing to do with the existence of God.

4. Atheims and humanism have murdered and butchered more human beings in the last 70 years than all the world’s religions have killed in the last 2000 years.

5. Science has played a key role in point 4 above. The church will never be blamed for the things that eventually destroy this planet, but science will be to blame for ALL of it.

5. All atheist states on the planet are totalitarian dictatorships with backward cultures, substandard technology and absolutely stupid economic models.

6. American atheism is nothing but another materialistic victimology concocted by the leftists to further divide and conquer the country.

America was founded on Christianity, as was Europe. The Judeo Christian world is the superior cultural model of all time. Atheism is on par with all the other religious cultures of this planet, in that it is sub par and relegated to the ash heap of history.

So, go now, and be illuminated by my wisdom and learn to think for yourselves. I have spoken.

I’m not appeasing anyone… I just don’t think that fighting and possibly dying over imaginary friends is a particularly intelligent or worthwhile thing.

Its a matter of believe what you want but keep it too yourself until you can fulfill the burden of proof.

The fact that someone can pick up a gun and shoot me only proves that they are homicidal and armed, not that their delusional belief is correct and true. If someone is at that point I am more than happy to pick up a gun of my own and shoot back.

Well Crazy Forrest, I see by your last post that you are quite capable of violence yourself, and I suspected as much. You ARE “more than happy” to pickup up a gun, despite what you claim with all that passivist twaddle. Now admit it – you are just trying to let all of us know that you “have good intentions” and are “tolerant” and “progressive.”

It is pointless to pretend that you are somehow “superior” in your liberal appeasement stance. What was the phrase you used in your first post? “Talking monkeys”? Yep, you are one of them, you just haven’t admitted it yet. But you need to face the reality that you so-called “progressives” have murdered and butchered and oppressed more workers in the last 70 years than all the religionists in the world for the past 5000 years ever dreamed of doing.

And, you’ve done it with the help of the smartest scientists and the most “intelligent” progressive thinkers in history.
