The First Time I
Heard Of Barack
By Tom Fife
11-20-8

During the period of roughly February 1992 to mid 1994, I was making frequent trips to Moscow, Russia, in the process of starting a software development joint-venture company with some people from the Russian scientific community. One of the men in charge on the Russian side was named V. M.; he had a wife named T.M.

V. was a level-headed scientist while his wife was rather deeply committed to the losing Communist cause – a cause she obviously was not abandoning.

One evening, during a trip early in 1992, the American half of our venture were invited to V. & T.’s Moscow flat as we were about to return to the States. The party went well and we had the normal dinner discussions.

As the evening wore on, T. developed a decidedly rough anti-American edge – one her husband tried to quietly rein in.

The bottom line of the tirade she started against the United States went something like this:

“You Americans always like to think that you have the perfect government and your people are always so perfect. Well then, why haven’t you had a woman president by now? You had a chance to vote for a woman vice-president and you didn’t do it.”

The general response went something along the lines that you don’t vote for someone just because of their s ex. Besides, you don’t vote for vice-president, but the president and vice-president as a ticket.

“Well, I think you are going to be surprised when you get a black president very soon.”

The consensus we expressed was that we didn’t think there was anything innately barring that. The right person at the right time and sure, America would try to vote for the right person, be he or she black or not.

“What if I told you that you will have a black president very soon and he will be a Commun ist?”

The out-of-the-blue remark was met by our stares. She continued, “Well, you will; and he will be a Commun ist.”

It was then that the husband unsuccessfully tried to change the subject; but she was on a roll and would have nothing of it. One of us asked, “It sounds like you know something we don’t know.”

“Yes, it is true. This is not some idle talk. He is already born and he is educated and being groomed to be president right now. You will be impressed to know that he has gone to the best schools of Presidents. He is what you call “Ivy League”. You don’t believe me, but he is real and I even know his name. His name is Barack. His mother is white and American and his father is black from Afr ica. That’s right, a cho colate baby! And he’s going to be your President.”

She became more and more smug as she presented her stream of detailed knowledge and predictions so matter-of-factly – as though all were foregone conclusions. “It’s all been thought out. His father is not an American black so he won’t have that social slave stigma. He is intelligent and he is half white and has been raised from the cradle to be an athe ist and a Commu nist. He’s gone to the finest schools. He is being guided every step of the way and he will be irresistible to America.”

We sat there not knowing what to say. She was obviously very happy that the Communists were doing this and that it would somehow be a thumbing of their collective noses at America: they would give us a black president and he’d be a Commun ist to boot. She made it quite obvious that she thought that this was going to breathe new life into world Commun ism. From this and other conversations with her, she always asserted that Commun ism was far from dead.

She was full of little details about him that she was eager to relate. I thought that maybe she was trying to show off that this truly was a real person and not just hot air.

She rattled off a complete litany. He was from Hawaii. He went to school in California. He lived in Chicago. He was soon to be elected to the legislature. “Have no doubt: he is one of us, a Soviet.”

At one point, she related some sort of San Francisco connection, but I didn’t understand what the point was and don’t recall much about that. I was just left with the notion that she considered the city to be some sort of a center for their activity here.

Since I had dabbled in languages, I knew a smattering of Ara bic. I made a comment: “If I remember correctly, ‘Barack’ comes from the Arabic word for ‘Blessing.’ That seems to be an odd name for an American.” She replied quickly, “Yes. It is ‘Afr ican’”, she insisted, “and he will be a blessing for world Commun ism. We will regain our strength and become the number one power in the world.”

She continued with something to the effect that America was at the same time the great hope and the great obstacle for Commun ism. America would have to be converted to Commun ism and Barack was going to pave the way.

So, what does this conversation from 1992 prove?

Well, it’s definitely anecdotal. It doesn’t prove that Obama has had Soviet Commun ist training nor that he was groomed to be the first black American president, but it does show one thing that I think is very important. It shows that Soviet Russian Commun ists knew of Barack from a very early date. It also shows that they truly believed among themselves that he was raised and groomed Commun ist to pave the way for their future. This report on Barack came personally to me from one of them long before America knew he existed.

Although I had never before heard of him, at the time of this conversation Obama was 30+ years old and was obviously tested enough that he was their anticipated rising star.

Sanchez is pathetic… in every aspect, intellectually, professionally and of course politically. He is fast becoming a joke in news circles.

LK   November 21st, 2008 - 11:04 am

Like your mother told you — consider the source! Rick Sanchez is probably a diversity hire — not a journalist — just a NEWS READER and he doesn’t even get that right!

Mark   November 21st, 2008 - 11:31 am

Rick Sanchez is from Miami,he hit and killed a pedestrian while drunk driving after leaving a sporting event maybe 10 years ago,he not only left the scene of the accident, the corrupt Miami(Cuban like him) police let him go home to allow him the excuse of drinking after hitting the man instead of before hitting him.
I know this because I am from Miami and have been watching his early career as a newscaster down here for many years.
He’s a loudmouth and should not be critical of ANYONE in a public setting.

doogle   November 21st, 2008 - 11:34 am

The Snub that wasn’t?

How about the apology that wasn’t?

Freakin’ dirt-bag liberals!

Jacob F   November 21st, 2008 - 12:12 pm

Three words: Bush Derangement Syndrome.

Frank Nitti   November 21st, 2008 - 12:28 pm

I can’t stand the sight of George W Bush, but I can’t stand that f*cking Sanchez even more.

He’s a loudmouthed, pushy boor who constantly interrupts people he’s supposed to be interviewing.

The sooner CNN consigns him to the trash heap, the better.

What a crock of s*it. You should be ashamed of yourself for posting crap like this.

Dirty Sanchez   November 21st, 2008 - 12:50 pm

In the 1990’s, he won the title of “Least Credible News Personality” from Miami New Times, the city’s alternative weekly, so many times in succession that the paper named the award after him.

Mr. Sanchez had already survived what would ordinarily be a career-killer*. While leaving a Miami Dolphins game with his father in 1990, Mr. Sanchez struck a drunken pedestrian, who later died of his injuries. According to police, Mr. Sanchez’s own blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit, and he left the scene before returning. He ultimately pleaded no contest to a D.U.I. charge, but avoided jail time, and even remained on the air.

Asked about the incident, Mr. Sanchez’s Ron Burgundy jocularity vanished in an instant. “I don’t see where that has anything to do with anything,” he said, and called the inquiry “a hatchet question.”

Clinger   November 21st, 2008 - 1:00 pm

MY HUMBLEST APOLOGIES TO ANY USED CAR SALESMAN READING THIS BECAUSE I KNOW YOUR PRINCIPLES FAR EXCEED EVEN THE MOST PRINCIPLED MEMBERS OF THE PRESS AND I DID NOT ELECT TO INCLUDE THE OLDEST PROFESSION OR THEIR PIMPS EITHER BECAUSE MY APOLOGY WOULD NECESSARILY BE JUST TOO LONG.

As the informed well understand the political inclination of a biased press Rich Sanchez has masterfully delivered the used car dealer selling technique presenting his sophistry
“The Snub that wasn’t.”

FIRE HIM!!! AND DON’T STOP FIRING UNTIL YOU HAVE DEFINED AND HIRED PRINCIPLED INDIVIDUALS WHOSE SOLE INTENT IS TO REPORT THE TRUTH AND NOT DEPEND ON THE TINGLING LEG SYNDROME AS DETERMINING THE CONCLUSION. PRAVDA IS NOT THE IDEAL NEWS ORGANIZATION MODEL.

CARL6352   November 21st, 2008 - 1:03 pm

I DIDNT KNOW PEOPLE WATCHED CNN. ALMOST ALL INTELLIGENT PEOPLE NO OF THERE BIAS. THEY ARE NOT JOURNALISTS THEY ARE TELEPROMPTER READERS LIKE OB

Dennis W   November 21st, 2008 - 1:04 pm

Sanchez is a marxist thug. He’s the same guy who ridiculed Joe the plumber in an interview because Joe expressed principles about fair taxation. Sanchez was beside himself with disbelief that someone would actually think that “spreading the wealth around” was un-American and not consistent with a free society. Sanchez should be fired for his ignorance more than anything else.

carl   November 21st, 2008 - 1:05 pm

Rick Sanchez

Epic Fail.

But there is always room for him at MSNBC, where this sort of journalism is highly valued.

cablegirl   November 21st, 2008 - 1:25 pm

The Mainstream Media strikes again in distorting the truth! I am boycotting all News!

rachel61   November 21st, 2008 - 1:29 pm

THAT was an apology? Just another segment of journalism gone wrong….some folks feed on journalists such as Cafferty,Campbell Brown, and Sanchez. I don’t ..they bring out the worst in people to promote their agenda. People this is NOT news …it is propaganda and may God help this country…we just elected a president with the press’s help. President elect Obama should have been vetted by the press and now he will have a more difficult time because some folks think he skated.I will support him because he is our President and pray that he makes decisions based on what is good for our country and not on what he owes the liberal press and that wing of the Democratic Party.

sigh   November 21st, 2008 - 1:45 pm

Well, if Sanchez just reads the teleprompter, somebody else is responsible for the story. I am calling on CNN to find the person(s) responsible for this horrible distortion and FIRE THEM.

Scroll down to Obama and his birth certificate. You can click on petition to congress there. Good reading also. It is free just to send email but I paid $9.00 to make sure it was delivered by email and by letter to my congressmen.

Don’t worry left wing nut jobs, how you did Bush will come back to you in………spades

Sandra Sandra Parapluie   November 21st, 2008 - 2:02 pm

Rick Sanchez is the biggest egotistical overacting jerk in the news business since Ted Knight. Anyone who remembers him from when he first came along remembers how he USED to do the news in a normal fashion, how the news SHOULD be done. Somewhere along the line, all of a sudden, Sanchez thought it would be cute if he started throwing his hands around and doing the hyperbole thing and overacting all the time. It’s just incessant clown behavior and far too difficult to watch. Throwing his hands all around and making sure he’s filmed with his hands in the picture at all times is the highest form of affectation. The only other person who can lay claim to the the title of news buffoon at that level is Paul Moyer, a local news goldfish in the Los Angeles market who thinks he is the BIG fish in the tank, but is just a complete photocopy of the late Tom Sndyer, with his “gosh-golly-gee-i-gotta-tellya-haww-haww-haww” routine and his dirty little wink-wink double entendres to his co-anchor, shuffling and reshuffling his little stack of papers and throwing them on the desk and doing it over and over and over, always quick with the plastic wit and crass mannerisms. He’s even famous on YouTube for his unbridled arrogance in a drama queen meltdown at a former co-anchor. These guys ought to just try to be better news pros and less “celebrities”. Just read the friggin’ news and stop trying to BE the news, and take your big glossy photos down from billboards all over your towns! These are the reasons foreigners mock Americans for their news clowns! Incredible!

Susan   November 21st, 2008 - 2:09 pm

I am a pretty hard core democrat but this story and the comments made during it were absolutely ridiculous. Sanchez comments and the “cooties” comment were juvenile to say the least and CNN should apologize.

Actually, it looked to me as though Bush had already talked to most of those in line and the other weren’t introduced and that is why there is not so much of the shaking of hands…..that is the way I see it…..it just does not look like a snub but familiarity.

Sanchez that was a rude move and while I want the man out quickly as President — he is our President — show some class.

Would be nice to see some of you right wingers criticize “your” press (Fox News, Hannity) once in awhile when they do the same stupid things — maybe everyone would start cleaning up their act.

Rick Sanchez is one of the more despicable members of the CNN team. He is pompous, arrogant and completely unprofessional. It’s time to purge him and his peers out of the journalistic community and replace these scum with real journalists with real integrity. Sanchez you’re disgraceful!

Rachel61   November 21st, 2008 - 2:39 pm

To Susan:
Excellent comments! I did not vote for President Bush in 2000 nor in 2004 . I do think all the low comments about our President are tasteless.

However keep in mind not all the folks writing comments are rightwingers. I am strictly independent and do not watch Fox because I do think they are right leaning nor do I watch MSNBC because they are so left leaning. I am attempting to watch CNN but Blitzer,Cafferty,Brown and Sanchez make it a bit hard to watch.
Again…excellent comments!

It is said that turkeys are extremely unintelligent animals, but as long as there are obama voters they will never be earth’s dumbest animals.

No, thank Congress for Affirmative Action.

sneemdream   November 21st, 2008 - 3:30 pm

How much proof does this country need that affirmative action is a toxic program.
Is CNN going to keep this killer on board??
20 years from now…no one will know that killer Sanchez even existed (except maybe his victim’s relatives)….but they will know that Pres Bush kept our country safe from those who want to annihilate us.
