Vermont School Sends Students Out of Classroom to Say Pledge of Allegiance

MSNBC: A sixth-grade student was assigned to go around to the four classrooms before classes started, gathering anyone who wanted to say it [the Pledge] and then walking them up creaky wooden steps to a second-floor gymnasium, where he led them in the pledge.

Disgraceful. Plain and simple

REM   November 17th, 2008 - 4:08 pm

Or, they could round up the kids who didn’t want to say the pledge and have them go somewhere else…
How many of these kids were just being lazy?

This kind of thing is silently sweeping away America. No prayer no allegience to our country. This is not new. These groups are getting control of our country because we the majority are allowing this to happen. In time “Goodbye” America as we new it.

Vermont sends a socialist to Senate. What should we expect. BOYCOTT VERMONT!

Change! That’s what we ask for…and that’s what were getting!

hmmm   November 17th, 2008 - 4:49 pm

You can expect this kind of attitude to be showing up in the nations capital this coming 2009. Already plaques with the mention of GOD have been quietly removed from various federal offices in DC.

Living near VT I hear this stuff all the time.

But, I believe, the school staff hands are tied.

Airwick   November 17th, 2008 - 5:05 pm

Do you people really need to say the Pledge of Allegiance to “prove” that you are patriotic Americans? If someone does not feel it necessary to say it does that mean he/she is not a patriot?

Recently I was a guest lecturer at a high school and the Pledge was broadcast over the loudspeaker. NONE of the kids recited it, most remained seated, I did not notice anyone with their hand over their heart, and a few of them were having conversations during the entire “ceremony”. Yet almost all of them are being fast tracked to college and a few had expressed an interest in joining the military. They ARE the future of this country. If they don’t think it is necessary to say the Pledge does this lessen their standing as citizens?

The school staff’s hands may be tied but the parent’s hands are not. The school board is responsible for this anti-American mess. If parents want to be part of the United States they need to go after the school board in a big way. Of course I am sure they would like to hear from all concerned Americans about this as well, hint, hint.

Yes, Vermont has a socialist representative, Bernie Sanders, who was elected as an independent because people were not voting for him when he ran honestly as a socialist candidate.

The state of Vermont is an embarrassment to America. Yes this is socialism or rather communism in action. Vermont is also a haven for child molesters and was in the news recently for releasing a child molester after only 60 days in jail.

All this demonstrates the severity of the mental imbalance of liberals.

pfn   November 17th, 2008 - 5:15 pm

Please grant Vermont its wish and let it secede from the US and join Canada or something. What a pathetic place!

Jenny   November 17th, 2008 - 5:24 pm

I pray that this group of kids is not called upon someday to defend this country. When kids are raised with no apparent pride in their country, I’m guessing none of them will want to defend it. Another case where the 5% loonies will make it unbearable for the 95%. Those of us in the 95% need to stop being so agreeable and passive.

The “pledge” is a disgrace. It forces unwitting participants to pledge allegiance “under god” – a god that does not exist. This trash patriotism should’ve been thrown out decades ago. Religious maniacs SHOULD be cordoned off if they want to god-terbate in public.

skat   November 17th, 2008 - 6:35 pm

Yes, these people are idiots, however, are Christians ever going to show up and vote? Christians have got to vote and to vote for the best choice available. Then you have more power to get a better candidate the next time, you get power by showing up – not by sitting out elections. We haven’t seen anything yet.

I swear I will never set foot in Vermont as long as I live. These scum-bags don’t deserve a cent of my money going into their Marxist tax coffers. Scum-bags!

They reap what they sow!

When it comes time pull together and pledge allegiance to ‘The One’ then count me out. Apparently I have NO responsibility to support anyone who I disagree with regardless of their position, according to the Liberal Mantra! I would love to have everyone in Vermont send me their tainted cash that has the words “In God We Trust” on it and have them issue their own currency. We’ll then see what their real values are!

Just like the terrorists these people use ‘children’ as cover

betrue   November 17th, 2008 - 7:28 pm

I suspect their aim is to get “One Nation Under God” erased from the pledge more than anything. You can’t have the peasants have another god other than government.

NoGuff   November 17th, 2008 - 7:57 pm

Hooray!

Now that’s how you teach kinds to be patriotic and to learn more about why their nation, the USA, is so special.

Good job, teachers!

Mac-101   November 17th, 2008 - 8:04 pm

G-d bless these kids. I was surprised that over half of the kids would get up and walk to another location and say the Pledge.

If you value this country, the G-d given Constition and our future, PLEASE join the Active, Gaurd or Reserve. It’s going to get ugly in the near future!

Evil always triumps when good people do nothing.

MORE UNACCEPTABLE P.C. B.S.!   November 17th, 2008 - 9:34 pm

What bu11sh1t! This is just more lousy Politically Correct CRAP!!!

How can our country EVER achieve any UNITY and RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER OR FOR OUR BELOVED COUNTRY, when this kind of ACLU-driven *crap* keeps stripping everyone of any sense of UNITY and love for America?!?!?!

Kids who grow up reciting the Pledge of Allegiance together, singing the National Anthem together, taking CIVICS classes together, etc. etc., achieve a sense of BELONGING to something GREAT and LARGER than their own little EGO. WHO is behind this B.S. of stamping out all the little things in life that make us ONE PEOPLE?????

“DIVERSITY” is NOTHING TO STRIVE FOR! It is a FACT of LIFE, but we need to RISE ABOVE OUR DIFFERENCES and RECOGNIZE & RESPECT OUR COMMONALITIES. Nonsense like the above story is NOT a healthy trend in our society.

Please post more details about this. Give examples: Who is doing this? Where? Why? How often has this occurred? By whose order?

Please post here. Thanks.

CLEARLY, these kids are not being taught any MANNERS or RESPECT, not to mention LOYALTY to our country. Some “future” for America! A bunch of egotistical BRATS who know nothing but how to text-message and post crap on MySpace and Youtube.
Doesn’t bode well for a good future for any of us that American KIDS are being raised & educated to be totally self-absorbed nitwits.

what are people in Vermont stupid? They think that they are being progressive but their ideas of ousting God are so old and communist. What is everyone in Vermont high on dope? Take back your state from this flaming freak liberals!!!!!!!!!11

Alex   November 17th, 2008 - 11:57 pm

I for one, am glad that the Pledge is slowly going the way of the do-do bird. It’s nonsense and mindless group think. If a student wants to recite the Pledge, great. If not, that’s okay too. Why make them hypocrites when they do not embrace it?

Decades ago, I gave up on the idea of “patriotism” and I don’t believe in organized religion either. Both are anachronisms as should be dispensed with as soon as possible.

The sooner we teach young people to adopt taking responsibility for their actions, showing compassion and kindness to others, following the Golden Rule and thinking for themselves the better we will be as a society.

The Pledge encourages group think which is indeed dangerous because it allows people to assign to others responsibilities for their own actions.

Airwick   November 18th, 2008 - 12:36 am

To To Airwick,
I am not saying that I approve. I am just stating my observations. However, I would like to add that these were good, intelligent kids who have a bright future. They may be a little “self absorbed” but so were WE when we were kids.

Kids are kids. Don’t lose any sleep over it…they will turn out fine in the end.

Chris-n-San Jose   November 18th, 2008 - 1:03 am

Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is meaningless. This country is deeply divided by race, ideals, etc. Allegiance means that Americans care about each other regardless of differences. It it best to show love for fellow Americans than to recite or lie about Allegiance. Here is the true meaning of patriotism.

White: Signifies purity and innocence
Red: Signifies valor and bravery
Blue: Signifies Vigilance, perseverance, and justice

Every child should know this but I bet they don’t!
The flag signifies what this country is about, all americans should pledge Allegiance to this great country…if not get out…

mrk4jc   November 18th, 2008 - 11:06 am

Dear Airwick and Alex, pull your numb heads out of your rear-ends. These children are being programmed that it’s not o.k. to love and respect your country.

Misty   November 18th, 2008 - 11:25 am

This is part of the liberal agenda. Wake up patriotic Americans. The far left extremists are trying to change the culture of our country. I view them as dangerous as Islamic terrorists. By the way, Vermont is also the home of countless liberal activist judges who sympathize with pedophiles, some of whom never serve jail time. I will not lower myelf to ever visit the state of Vermont. This is beyond shameful.

Robin Grant   November 18th, 2008 - 2:24 pm

I am a parent of a child at the Woodbury School. This Fox report is a total lie, and the producers know it because several parents told them the truth.

Our kids are not BANNED from the classroom! We have a tiny school, just under 60 students total, grade K-6 combined. All the children gather together to say it as a group with a sixth grader leading the pledge! It is an awesome and beautiful sight to see! More then 95% of the students participate!

There is only ONE guy, who took his kids out of school already, is not satisfied *with his own petition* that had asked for the pledge to be said 5 days a week. Many of those that signed his petition ARE happy with the group recitation and don’t see the point of keeping our children separated from each other.

It’s as if we have a common HomeRoom right at the beginning of the school day, it is NOT disruptive to the flow of education.

Every one of you commenters needs to understand that you have not been told the truth. We ARE patriotic Americans here in Woodbury, our students ARE saying the pledge properly, they are doing it together as a community, with one older student being responsible.

The sixth graders also have a ceremony at the end of the day when they are responsible for lowering the outdoor flag and properly and respectfully bringing it into their classroom to fold it and stow it correctly.

Please, everyone, don’t jump to conclusions when Fox News and the AP knowingly lie to you.

Because of all this attention and nasty phone calls our teachers and students are terrified! We don’t deserve this.

mick   November 18th, 2008 - 3:13 pm

Just another example of “liberal tolerance”. Liberalism is a mental disease, and it’s advocates are nothing more than Nazis.

SAY THE PLEDGE DAILY, KIDS   November 19th, 2008 - 3:40 am

They shouldn’t have to leave class to say the Pledge. EVERY student should stand and say the Pledge at the beginning of classes each morning. It is not a meaningless ritual nor is it harmful or brainwashing, as some seem to think. It is a COMMUNAL thing that helps the classes feel a sense of SOLIDARITY. If more schools did this, as they did in the “old days,” there would be more HARMONY, sense of COMMUNITY and UNITY, and less VIOLENCE and HATRED.

Teachers should lead their classes in saying the Pledge. It is GOOD for all! If any child refuses to do so, it is SOLELY BECAUSE HIS OR HER *COMMIE PARENT* HAS BRAINWASHED THE KID *AGAINST* PARTICIPATING IN PATRIOTIC ACTIVITIES.

1st Amendment   November 19th, 2008 - 4:29 pm

“nor interfere with the free exercise thereof” is also part of the first amendment….

Chris-n-San Jose   November 19th, 2008 - 10:10 pm

SAY THE PLEDGE DAILY, KIDS,

Reciting the pledge is up to each student to determine. Some can only pledge allegiance to the Kingdom of Heaven and no worldly kingdoms, to others there may be no point in reciting words that have no effect on the heart. Reciting the pledge has not and will not stop violence because majority of school’s recite it everyday and crime is still ongoing.

True community and unity must start with love for your fellow-man. Without love reciting words will not fool anyone or create a magical response. Without love you will continue to have gang violence, racism, etc. There is no arguing with the truth. What we need is love for each other, something reciting a pledge cannot give but God can.
