Edwards’ Wife Makes Surprise Call to Coulter on ‘Hardball’
John Edwards' wife Elizabeth called in to Hardball on Tuesday to confront Ann Coulter and asked the best-selling author to "stop the personal attacks." Coulter responds.
is anne coulter really that dumb that she can’t figure out what personal attacks are? that’s her whole act, so without them, I guess she wouldn’t be able to write any books.
billJune 26th, 2007 - 8:16 pm
Oh pleeezzze,
That call was a “surprise” only to Ann…a perfect example of ambush journalism. But it does prove who wears the pants in the Edwards family!
Daniel MartinJune 26th, 2007 - 8:18 pm
Go Ann! What hypocrisy on both Edwards and Matthews part. The same type of speech fills the mouths of liberal talking heads but I don’t see Chris having the same “disgust” for them that he has for Ms. Coulter. Keep it up!!
NikJune 26th, 2007 - 8:19 pm
Elizabeth Edwards disgusts me–even more than her husband does.
Jeez, I dig Ann Coulter. She knows precisely when to call a spade a spade.
Naturally, the Left will claim Ann was waxed here, but they never actually listen to what she has to say. It’s just Eliz. Edwards whining about “hate”, to protect her rich shyster scumbag.
Is “scumbag” a hate word? Do I have to go into rehab now?
DanJune 26th, 2007 - 8:21 pm
Like Edwards or not, any rational person could only describe the attacks Coulter makes as inappropriate.
Rich TherrienJune 26th, 2007 - 8:24 pm
Notice that Edwards wife resorts to the victimized female role. Is she a weak woman needing protection? Isn’t that exactly what Hillary and the lesbians deny? Also, liberals always avoid discussing the issues because their ’solutions’ to problems are specious.

Chris Matthews, 6 feet tall and 2 inches deep. The hypocrisy just never ends for the left. Where was Chris Matthews when the trail lawyer went after Cheney’s daughter. Talk about a set up call-in.
DavidJune 26th, 2007 - 8:41 pm
How else could Ms Coulter make a living? To the reader: You can choose not to listen to this kind of divisive banter. Another chance is presenting itself for you not to be taken.
robJune 26th, 2007 - 9:21 pm
Let me get this straight. A man who wants to be the future leader of the free world just had his mom call up and ask Ann to stop picking on him? How bout people like Ann are the only ones who will tell you that John Edwards made his money bringing phony malpractice suits against OBGYN’s. He wouldn’t take a case in which a baby had died because he could get more money with a child who was handicapped sitting in the courtroom to generate sympathy.
johnJune 26th, 2007 - 9:55 pm
Ann Coulter is just another example of a person who can’t debate the issues so she makes personal attacks and jokes. If you need more examples see Sean Hannity.

WOW! JOhn Edwards has his wife go out to defend him! WHAT A SISSY!
AprilJune 26th, 2007 - 10:39 pm
Yeah, why isn’t John Edwards on the phone? Because the Breck Girl (as el Rushbo calls him) is a sissy!
JeremyJune 26th, 2007 - 11:06 pm
As much as I dislike Ann Coulter’s comments and her views, she is 100% correct here. The idea that she shouldn’t make fun of John Edwards’ personal failings is just absurd. He is a walking hypocrisy mill and having his wife call in to defend him is just so beyond belief, it’s hard to describe.
Does America really want another Hillary Clinton as First Lady?
RobertJune 27th, 2007 - 12:31 am
Ann Coulter is living demonstration of the modern Republicanism – venomous, nasty, and yet describes herself as a “Christian”.
MingJune 27th, 2007 - 12:41 am
Is it too much to ask of respectable television stations (including CNN, MSNBC and Fox) to *not* put Ann Coulter on the air?
JoshuaJune 27th, 2007 - 12:50 am
The Queen of conservatism slays yet another BIG LIB hypocrite.
She was ambushed and still came out on top of those intellectual midgets.
As for Ann’s attacks – they wouldn’t sting so much if they weren’t true.
BillJune 27th, 2007 - 12:54 am
Where was John? Getting his hair and nails done while his wife picks fights with political commentators?
philipdayJune 27th, 2007 - 1:00 am
Ann Coulter contributes nothing positive to the dialogue; she just spews venom. Elizabeth Edwards handles herself with grace and class. Coulter wouldn’t know what that is. When did things turn around? I thought the Democrats were supposed to be crass and the Republicans were supposed to be classy. My how things have changed.
cookieJune 27th, 2007 - 1:02 am
Ann Coulter is not a help to the republican party and conservatives. If this is the voice and the face the conversatives long for in our public debate we are screwed.
Anyone who can’t have any compassion for a woman who’s son had died debating an author who wrote an article about her son’s death and saying Edwards had a bumber sticker on his car which said “I have a dead son” is completely warped.
There is no logic in someone who thinks this is some way helpful dialog and winning ticket to conservatism.
If conservatives continue to think Ann Coulter is such a wonderful spokesperson you can expect to be not winning many elections. Any rationale person would call this what it is-garbage.
philipdayJune 27th, 2007 - 1:30 am
When Elizabeth comments that she and Ann don’t hang out together, Ann claims (poor victim that she is) that she “doesn’t have enough money”.
Baloney. Is Ann not a wealthy woman? I am sure she makes way more than most of us. I am calling her on out this one: she is a liar.
She really needs to go away. Every time she opens her mouth, more money gets poured into her opponents’ coffers.
fed upJune 27th, 2007 - 3:02 am
Sure, Coulter, why not? Go ahead and make fun of their dead son. After all, they’re on the other team… I said it three years ago… rationalize it all away, so you can sleep at night.
DylanJune 27th, 2007 - 3:05 am
republicans and ann coulter fans are such whiny panty-waists, they’re pathetic
steve bourgJune 27th, 2007 - 6:57 am
Unfortunately, most people don’t understand what’s going on here. Ann Coulter was “joking” about Bill Maher’s “joke” about Dick Cheney, that the country would be better off if Cheney had died…so Coulter made a similar joke about JEdwards. Ann makes the absolutely correct and larger point that JEdwards became wealthy by his phony “channeling speeches” in front of juries, convincing them that doctors delivering babies were negligent, resulting in plaintiffs winning tens of millions of dollars for themselves and the Edwards family. Why can’t Edwards just go off quietly into the sunset?
AxelDCJune 27th, 2007 - 7:25 am
Why does this clown still have a platform to speak from? Her Eva Braun routine is getting old.
Coulter is not a stupid woman. She knows exactly what she is doing: she says outrageous things to get attention and make money. When confronted by the mother of the dead boy she mocked, Ann balked and realized someone had called her bluff.
Her stammering response is pathetic. Shame on MSNBC, CNN, Fox News, et al for giving this act a stage. Coulter only cares about two things: attention and the money it brings her.
MartyJune 27th, 2007 - 8:47 am
Gee….. where was Chris Mathews when Bill Maher said: “I wish Dick Cheney was killed in a terrorist attack.” Or when Julliane Marveaux said “I hope Clarence Thomas’ wife feeds him eggs so he will have a heart attack and die?”
Their sensitivity and sense of fairness is pretty damn selective. They CONSTANTLY slur and smear conservatives, while demanding immunity from tastetless attacks on themselves.
Amazing hipocracy from the radical left!
I’m shocked that Coulter was so nice to that fat cow….
siaslJune 27th, 2007 - 8:50 am
John says:
‘Where was Chris Matthews when the trail lawyer went after Cheney’s daughter.’
This comment just shows how over and over and over again, conservatives play the victim better than anyone in the history of mankind.
They are free to wish people with opposing opinions to be killed, to make fun of folks who have lost a child, to call war heroes cowards, to align decorated combat vets with Osama…but have John Edwards point out that he supports the rights of Dick Cheney’s lesbian daughter to live with equality and it’s…
‘Where was Chris Matthews when the trail lawyer went after Cheney’s daughter. ‘
There is simply no point in trying to dialog with some people. It’s truly hopeless.
Cathy MontgomeryJune 27th, 2007 - 9:05 am
I love Ann Coulter.
Chris Matthews set her up and she didn’t even flinch. He’s quite the JOURNALIST and plays GREAT HARDBALL!
Don’t hold your breath waiting for a leftist liberal to get the same treatment from Matthews.
Hey libs….
If you don’t like Ann Coulter, don’t read her columns or books. She’s doing just fine without you.
One AmericanJune 27th, 2007 - 9:17 am
Ann is popular because she is the counter to what we conservatives have to put up with from 99% of the media every day. You can’t turn on NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, etc., etc. without being insulted, lied to, abused and mis-represented any day of the week. Ann puts it back in their face and frankly, I enjoy that. No one in the MSM speaks for me. I’m going to enjoy Ann every opportunity I have to see and hear her. That is until the Dems are successful in taking away free speach, i.e. the “Fairness” Act.
DrillingJune 27th, 2007 - 9:31 am
I guess Elizabeth Edwards doesn’t have a problem with “hateful rhetoric” aimed at the President. Just leave her hubby alone you bunch of meanies. And Matthews is a shill! Great job with that whole Carter administration thing Chris. Ann Coulter should skewer Edwards in her next column because his policies are completely ridiculous! Talk about leaning whichever way the wind blows, he positioned himself as a centrist in 2004 and that didn’t work so now he veers off to the left. Yes sir, a man of conviction.
Paul LinxwilerJune 27th, 2007 - 10:02 am
Let Ann keep talking: she’ll help ensure a complete wipeout of the Repuglicans in ‘08. If you thought ‘06 was bad (snicker), just wait for ‘08. Dems in the White House, and super-majorities in bouth houses. So let Ann keep talking: every word she speaks is money in the bank for the Dems.
I’m sure John Edwards didn’t use personal attacts when he fleced insurance companies for millions ….It’s called ‘politics’, Mrs Edwards cannot make the rules after she and John get their butts kicked !
PabloJune 27th, 2007 - 11:42 am
The more the Left hates Ann, the closer she is to their heart. The Left only attacks the voices that are exposing them. Keep talking and writing Ann. It is still a free country.
IanJune 27th, 2007 - 12:34 pm
To Ann Coulter, and the majority of the people posting here either from the left or right – you ALL sound like a bunch of whiny children. “ohh..the left are hypocrites and attack the right” & “the right are hypocrites and always attack the left”.
Step back and use your brains and hearts, and let’s have an intelligent dialog! Something rare in politics unfortunately.
s.heflinJune 27th, 2007 - 12:41 pm
Go Ann Coulter…you are bright, articulate and a great comeback against the vile and spin talkings of the liberal left. I use to get so upset when James Carville would rant ant rave…You are an answer to a prayer to combat the James Carvilles of the left…Thanks for doing a great job.
Chris Matthews is sooooooooooo left and liberal in his material…but that is who he is through and through…Keep up the great work Ann…We love you…nsh
CecilJune 27th, 2007 - 12:46 pm
You can tell COulter is lying because her adam’s apples is moving.
If Coulter hates Americans so much why doesn’t she leave?
CrisJune 27th, 2007 - 12:51 pm
I second what Ian said. Rude, hateful, silly (calling people fat) comments by both sides of the political spectrum are wrong. It adds absolutely NOTHING to the national debate. So many posters here have obviously not left preschool. “They said this, they say that…” justification for what any person with any sense or any real intelligence knows it wrong is pathetic. Until we, as nation, stop listening to pundits on both sides who have nothing to add to the dialogue but, “fat thighs” or calling someone a “chimp” and start really looking long and hard at issues and solutions and who can address each, I fear for our future.
IanJune 27th, 2007 - 12:53 pm
s.heflin – thank you for driving my point home. perfect timing my friend!
DMcJune 27th, 2007 - 1:18 pm
“If I’m going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I’ll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot,” Coulter responded, riffing on Maher’s comment during his HBO show in which he said “people wouldn’t be dying needlessly” if Cheney had been killed during an insurgent attack that happened while he was in Afghanistan.”
Did Ms. Edwards call Bill Maher and complain about the mean and hateful things he was saying???? Hell no, it’s only a one way street when it comes to DemocRATS!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
NC GuyJune 27th, 2007 - 1:43 pm
The fact is that The Edwards DID use their son’s death for symapthy in the 2004 election. Johnny wore the pin which was his son’s, and often reminded folks that the pin was his dead son’s, and he wouldn’t talk about, and he was running for Prez beacuse of his son… Of course since Eliz has cancer, she can’t be picked on, oh and she lost a son if you didn’t know. What a shamelss tool Elizabeth is. But I just loved it when Ann called Johnny a shyster on national TV (with few folks watching unfortunately).
bobJune 27th, 2007 - 2:06 pm
GO ANN. She has more balls than all of the presidential candidates combined, including Shillary. Although she can be brash, we need more people who are not plagued by PC. To all the morons who commented that they think she is bad, you know as well as I do that she made Matthews and Mrs. Edwards look foolish. Also, in his attempt to draw up support for his floundering campaign by having his cancer stricken, innocent, lost a child wife ambush Ann on live TV and fight his battles for him, John Edwards came out looking like a big WUSS!
clownfeetJune 27th, 2007 - 2:21 pm
siasl says,
‘This comment just shows how over and over and over again, conservatives play the victim better than anyone in the history of mankind.’
siasl, you have obviously have never been exposed to a college-level liberal arts education. How could you have come to this conclusion since American colleges and universities are predominately conservative with conservative faculty telling young impressionable minds that conservatives and conservatism as an ideology have been victimed since mankind?
‘…but have John Edwards point out that he supports the rights of Dick Cheney’s lesbian daughter to live with equality and it’s…
There is simply no point in trying to dialog with some people. It’s truly hopeless.’
I’ll give it a try since I’m in the camp that appears to have no hope and will be happily content dragging knuckles and carrying a club. Your condescending notion that there is no point because us victimized conservatives are too wrapped in our ideology belies what we are too stupid to perceive in the agenda behind why Edwards made that statement. To you, it appears Edwards is making a common sense plea-why can’t we live in equality. There’s one problem: this was a nationally televised debate. I am too stupid to understand why he could have generally addressed the gay-lesbian community but instead chose the daughter of his debating opponent. I don’t think you can see past the emotional plea of Edwards to understand what us knuckle-draggers see as a tasteless attempt at (whoa) victimizing his opponent’s daughter. It also insinuated that somehow Dick Cheney was against equality (granted liberal vs. conservative equality-another debate)and henceforth felt his daughter was not an equal person. Let me add in my attempt to dialog that I learned this from a personal experience. One day us knuckle-dragging conservatives were in front of the cave picking fleas out of our beards and hair when we began to talk about responsibility for building fire. I suggested that some of the women should be responsibile for the fire, which in our tribe women are forbidden to do. I began to debate the second-in-charge about that we should all equally have fire. I then made the claim that I thought even his daughter should have fire even though she leads the hunting packs and routinely beats up the boys in our tribe. The supporters of women not having fire ostracized me for awhile after that.

What a horrible woman Anne is.
She’s manipulative, trying to twist everything to make herself look like a victim.
I can’t believe how many uneducated people above are going to her defense.
She has always used personal attacks in everything she has done. This will hopefully hurt the republicans and get them out of office for good! why would any decent American want someone who thinks like Anne controlling the country.
The only benefit to her talking is that it’s benefitting the people who should be running the country – the Democrats.
PaulJune 27th, 2007 - 3:43 pm
Hey Clownfeet, Universities and Colleges are conservative? What planet are you from. I’ve attended colleges and found that most of the faculty is as Liberal as they come. Wake up.
John MarcJune 28th, 2007 - 9:25 am
If you bothered to watch the interviews, you will find that Mrs. Edwards was out of line. Enough Polotics.
scott cornetteJune 29th, 2007 - 12:02 pm
Paul, your last comment was a classic. I was scratching my head trying to think of all of these conservative universities and where they existed. Oh yeah, they don’t exist. Hey Stephanie do you think anyone feels you’re uneducated because you’re defending the Edwards? There’s probably one or two.
How is Elizabeth Edward’s “rabid, rabid, Republican” neighbor doing?
