As a woman, to see a potential vp winking while giving her interviews, made me wonder if there was a JOKE i missed. To call it sexist is not the point – it is unprofessional!

Let’s take a recent example of “Palinese” and analyze it.

On October 24th, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) gave a policy speech urging the federal government to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). She did this to illustrate her advocacy for handicapped children, those with autism in particular. Looking for a source of funding she noted that there is plenty of money available to fund IDEA if “earmark” money was used. This is actually a worthwhile endeavor but, as usual, poor Sarah managed to speak without engaging her brain. She followed it up with this bit of nonsense:

“Where does a lot of that earmark money end up anyway? [pause] You’ve heard about some of these pet projects they really don’t make a whole lot of sense and sometimes these dollars go to projects that have little or nothing to do with the public good. Things like fruit fly research in Paris, France. I kid you not.”

Now I hate to disappoint Ms. Palin but if she had managed to stay awake in an ELEMENTARY biology class (you DID go that far in science, didn’t you, Sarah?) she would have noticed that the study of Drosophila genetics is fundamental to the understanding of genetics and in particular developmental genetics. It is so important a tool that there is not enough space (or time) here to even begin to describe it—it would literally take volumes. That aside I will mention some of the more recent events in “fly” research. I quote from Kathy E. Mitchell, Ph.D., Biophysicist:

“THE NOBEL PRIZE FOR GENETICS OF DEVELOPMENT 1995 STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Three biologists have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their pioneering work on the genetic control of embryonic development. The researchers work with the Drosophila melanogaster fruit fly provided key information on factors influencing human embryology and birth defects. The recipients of this year’s prize are Drs. Edward Lewis, of the California Institute of Technology; Christiane Nuesslein-Volhard, of Germany’s Max-Planck Institute; and Eric Wieschaus, at Princeton. In addition scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine have shown that a protein called neurexin is required for nerve cell connections to form and function correctly. This discovery was made using Drosophila and could lead to a greater understanding of autism disorders since neurexins have been identified as a genetic risk factor for autism. This was the VERY cause she was championing in her speech.

African Press International (API) claims to have a tape of Michelle Obama discussing issues that will have a “huge impact” on US National Security. API has agreed to release that tape to FOX NEWS Channel, which will air it.

According to API, ten days ago they received the first request to accept 2 million US dollars from Mr Ed Hale, President of Plains Radio, Texas – USA, in an effort to suppress the information from reaching the public before the coming US Presidential elections.

Six hours after the release of information by API on the planned broadcast by Fox News Network of the Michelle Obama tape, API was contacted by Obama’s Campaign Manager.

Obama’s campaign manager allegedly contacted API by telephone and email offering $3 million US dollars followed with a request to API to cancel the deal with Fox News Network.

API’s Chief editor is expected to travel to New York, together with the Canadian lawyer, where he will appear live in one of the shows that will air the Michelle Obama tape.

Those who are close to the democratic presidential candidate must be desperate to win the election no matter what, otherwise they would not have taken such bold step to contact API with an offer of a bribe in order to stop the airing of the tape.

However, it attempted to portray Palin as insufficient simply because she is Palin, as if no further words were necessary. It never said “Sarah Palin is unqualified help him on the economy because….” Instead it attempted to say “what a joke!” without saying anything at all. Is Sarah Palin, duly elected governor of Alaska, really so dim that she’s beneath contempt? This ad was ill-conceived.
