The so-called “Fairness Doctrine” is nothing less than a trampling of our rights to free speech and freedom of choice. There’s a REASON that conservative views and personalities dominate talk radio today — it SELLS. Conservativism is what most talk radio audiences prefer, and they’re willing to sit through advertising to listen to it. If most audiences preferred liberal propaganda, then there would be an advertising market for it. As it stands, liberal talk radio is a losing proposition for advertisers…BECAUSE MOST AUDIENCES VOLUNTARILY DON’T LISTEN TO LIBERAL TALK RADIO. As listeners, it’s OUR choices that determine radio format and content, because radio RESPONDS to the preferences of its listeners as a matter of fiscal necessity. For these Congressional leftists to MANDATE the political content of American radio stations is no better than the political censorship of television by Venezuela’s fascist president Hugo Chavez. When Liberals/Leftists cannot compete in the free marketplace or the marketplace of ideas, they will use whatever means necessary to circumvent the market and legislate it. As they are usually unable to pass their agenda thru legislation, since the majority of Americans disagree with it, they will turn to the courts. Every honest person knows that Air America received a media version of affirmative action, yet still failed. The press should be free and independent. We do not have Pravda, yet. Re-institution of the fairness doctrine or an iteration of it will be a first step down a slippery slope where Government regulates free speech and punishes those whom are not viewed as having enough political correctness. The same way President Bush has underestimated the backlash against the proposed amnesty bill, Liberals have no idea the backlash if they seek to legislate what they deem to be fit for the political airwaves. As divided as Republicans and conservatives are today, they will be just as united once this gauntlet is thrown down by Hillary and her syndicates of Soros, Brock, Podesta, etc.

Yeah…the other day I was listening to NPR Democracy Now and wondered when they would put a non-rabid non-Intafadah guest on while discussing the situation in the Gaza Strip…..boy I sure hope Boxer and Clinton get on that. 2) This source introduces the story on a small media outlet (an AM station in LA? C’mon folks).
3) The story spreads along the web with the help of conservative bloggers and websites like Drudge.
4) The story hits conservative print media (NY Sun, NY Daily News, Wash Times)
5) Fox news runs with it.
6) The rest of the cable news channels cover it because they do not want to be left behind the story.
7) The story makes it into the MSM as the gospel truth.
8) At some point you hear about the story and you are angered.
9) While you are in this fervor you are DISTRACTED from what the hell is really wrong with this country.
10) The story runs for a few days and something else slips under the radar.
11) The cycle repeats with a story usually breaking on Sunday night or early Monday and it runs all week.

Consider this: Maybe someone is trying to deflect debate from the immigration issue. The bill has been revived. The people in charge are NOT STUPID. If they can get you to talk about the Boogeyman (aka anyone named Clinton) then you will not be talking about how much you hate the immigration “compromise” that the Republican party is advancing.

And what the hell can Boxer and Clinton do about talk radio? They do not even have the votes (or the guts) to make the Iraq war an issue.

I believe few listeners agree with everything talk radio hosts say or push, but we reserve the right to listen. Our country was founded with the concept of freedom to assemble, freedom to worship as we please, and freedom to say what we like and listen to anyone we wish to listen to. Would-be rulers such as the Clintons, Boxer, and Lott well may be in for a huge surprise if they try to limit our basic freedoms. They think they are the butt of a firestorm now over their pushing amnesty for illegal aliens, but I suspect that their attempts to limit free expression and access to diverse opinions would generate a near rebellion. Hell, I am an old man and I am about ready to take up arms as it is. It wouldn’t take much more of a breakdown of trust in our institutions and supposed leaders to bring out rebellious sentiments im many, many heretofore gentle, law-abiding citizens. These people have a severe case of the disconnects.

Again, another case of how dangerous this Facist cow is. These are people who want to change any opinion of people that don’t agree with them by censoring and silencing. Keep praying that more independents run because each time a new one enters, (ala Ralph Nader) it takes away tons of votes from the likes of Hillary the Cow.

Why stop at Talk Radio. It should include websites also. Then we need to make sure there are appropriate hours for Muslim Radio to match Christian Radio. The so-called “fairness” doctrine is already on the books, it is just suspended thanks to Ronald Regan. All it would take is for a change of one vote on the board that oversees the regulation – I forget the agency, probably the FCC but I’m not sure – but by law there has to be two Democrats, two Republicans and one person appointed by the sitting president on the board that suspended it. So if the country is unfortunate enough to have to suffer through a Democrat president being elected in 2008; welcome back the fairness doctrine. Besides only a lib would call stifling speech fair. Obviously you can’t beat us in the FREE market so you resort to using the government to try and regulate the will of the people.

This doesn’t make any sense. There is a 0 chance of The Fairness Doctrine being revived. All this accomplishes is invigorating the GOP base. Are the Dems that over confident? If I was running the DNC, the last thing I would advise 18 months before an election is to propose silly bills that serve to invigorate the conservatives.

Congress’s approval ratings are below that of Bush. The Dems risk losing at least the House if they keep this up. My advise to them is to keep it up. Next week, Reid and Durbin should announce an across the board tax 15% hike, followed by Senator Kennedy proposing a bill to crown HRC the first Queen of the USA. That should fire up the conservative base.

Talk radio worked well when the Fairness Doctrine was in place, but it really took off and to the extreme Right after Reagan’s FCC deregulated and got rid of the Fairness Doctrine. With the overwhelming number of right-wing radio dominating the “public” airwaves, it seems like a no brainer that some kind of fairness doctrine be reinstituted. Public airwaves should not be dominated the way they are. Public airwaves should be used for the fair use of all citizens. If Hillary and Barbara have a plan to bring fairness back, I’m all for it.

The one issue that I think is valid is that too few owners own the many radio and tv stations across the country.

The issue that I DON’T think is valid is that conservative talk shows take advantage of this situation. Liberal talking points are just not often valid, and most people know it. I think Rush, Hannity, and O’Reilly are dolts, but at least most of the stuff they talk about makes sense (sans the diatribes and hate-mongering) and doesn’t propagandize their followers into hating the rich because they’re rich, the Christians because they’re Christian, etc.

Then they also need a legislative fix for the following to insure that opposing views are included:

Public TV
Newspapers
New magazines
Unions (especially teachers)
Lawyers
School text books

I’m sure there are many others, but since they love legislation, then others can be added after the initial passing of any bill.

I could defend my position pretty well too, if I had a bank of call screeners that only let opposing viewpoints on when the caller was inarticulate. Once in a great while, Rush’s screeners will screw up and let an intellegent caller with an opposing viewpoint through, and that’s when the stammering and sputtering on Rush’s part starts. He can’t cut them off fast enough.

I think the problem with Conservative radio isn’t the espoused viewpoint or the lack of balance. It’s the intellectual dishonesty that (A) somehow Rush, Hannity, O’Reilly and Savage aren’t huge forces in the mainstream media, and (B) they’re as guilty as everyone else of dumbing things down and reducing discourse to slogans and stereotypes. Fox is consistently and overwhelmingly #1 because they have more viewers than any other channel. Millions get their information from talk radio. These things ARE the mainstream now. Unfortunately, the kinds of Conservatives those outlets speak to seem to relish the idea that they’re downtrodden and overlooked, but that they’re part of a small, growing rebellion. Nonsense. I saw a clip of a debate between Wm.F Buckley and Noam Chomsky on the Dick Cavitt show. That would never happen now, even on Fox. It seems Conservatives who get their political input from TV and radio have no discipline for learning about things, they just want to be told what’s what by the firm-but-fair father figure talking head that most appeals to them.

Hmmm… I don’t recall the President, while running for office, seeking a “legislative” solution to the political bias or imbalance in television or printed news. WE who listen to “Talk Radio” Have actually read the constitution and have been appaled how LIBERAL JUDGES, MEMBERS OF CONGRESS, AND THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAVE MADE A MOCKERY OF THIS FOUNDING DOCUMENT. ie “ONE MAN” lying to a Federal Judge about his daughter saying the Pledge of Allegence can take the words UNDER GOD out of it. No one who listens to “Talk Radio” would agree that it is a separation of church and state issue which on it’s own is a farce because it is NOT in the FIRST AMENDMENT but was of a letter written by Jefferson. There is no mention of CHURCH,STATE or SEPARATION in the FIRST AMENDMENT. THERE IS NO MENTION OF FREEDOM FROM RELIGION EITHER. There is no support of any position that could be used to outlaw religion because it exists or (SHOCK) offends those of a different religion or to those who have NO religion at all. Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, and even Foreigners have recognized that this is a CHRISTIAN NATION. HEY JOE did you know many of our most prestigious colleges were started by Christians not your precious liberal educators you put such trust in. JOE did you know that the Bible was once required reading in schools across the nation. Schools run by LOCAL individuals and not FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. One more thank you Jimmy “Peanut” Carter.

What part of the First Amendment do they not understand?

These same people seem to have a chronic problem. They also ignore the Second Amendment, the Fourth, etc…

Get a clue ladies… Americans have had free speech and guns since day #1. Countless brave Americans fought and died to protect those rights.

The only way you will take those rights away is over our dead bodies.
