This made me think, and I came to a realization that the lady’s husband and daughter are right. Who says that chicken, ribs, watermelon, and kool-aid ™ are stereotypes? I was at least 19 or 20 before I was TOLD (by a black freind) that they were offensive black sterotypes. I just thought they were food. I LOVE ribs and chicken. I LOVE kool-aid (especially with vodka). I used to think I was in heaven when I was eating a watermelon. If anything, these foodstuffs are stereotypical of a lower to middle-class diet. I think this advertisment (while not necessarily in good taste) is ironicaly funny. Think about it. When do you think the last time Mr. Well Educated Rich Man (who was born wealthy so he didn’t have to work for it) Liar (oops, Lawyer) Obama sat down out back by the BBQ (cause there’s no AC in the house) to politely gnosh on some BBQ ribs dripping with sauce, a quarter of beer-can chicken, a huge two handed slice of still-got-the-seeds-in-it-so-you-got-to-spit-em’-out watermelon, and washed it down with the lemonade flavored kool-aid (because you can’t afford the country-time or enough lemons)??? I would venture to say it’s never happened. People don’t traditionally eat that way in Hawaii or Asia. I don’t think I would ever give up doing it. I only got KFC on very special occasions, as we couldn’t afford it. When we were trated to kool-aid, it was usually at a friends house. Ribs were never purchased, the only time I got them was at someone else’s house or after I raised a cow for slaughter. I had grown up thinking that these foodstuffs were stereotypical of people wealthier than I. I called them lucky, not black.
