Interesting that NOW would endorse a woman who is not only anti-abortion rights, but BROADLY anti-choice. Palin’s abstinence-only views on sex ed have wrought fairly predictable results within her own family: a pregnant teenager whose life has been drastically altered forever due to premature parenthood.
It’s one thing for Palin to advocate this type of situation for her own family, which is relatively privileged financially. Her daughter’s dropping out of high school will not set her back permanently, as a pregnancy would for so many young women who come from lesser means.
No abortion? That’s one thing, and something I can respect in a politician IF he or she also supports ubiquitously available birth control and rigorous, wide-spectrum sex ed. But Palin believes in none of the above. That will result in many more unwanted pregnancies by young women who can’t even fend for themselves financially, much less for another mouth to feed; meanwhile, their often limited educational options are curtailed even further.
That hurts women, and their babies.
Shame on Shelly Mandell.
And NOW? Your relevance to the true feminist movement shrinks by the day. Antics like this are only going to accelerate that trend.

Elise, I did hear here in an interview to agree with contraceptives. She also said she would’t force her views on others. She beleives that life begins at conception, that’s the only common sense approach. If you want to kill a baby then that’s a womens choice, no matter how you phrase it, it is still killing a baby. A better choice is to plan sex and not hump like dogs in heat!
Shelly Mandel was speaking on behalf of herself and not N.O.W. She said as much during her short speech. This isn’t an endorsement from N.O.W.

Palin survived possibly from drinking a 6 pack of RED BULL! The woman was WIRED, clearly nervous and running through the debate like it was a marathon. She did not faint like I thought she might, but she wasn’t mentally there either. She seemed programmed to respond with memorized statements and paragraph notes in front of her. I bet they were numbered in a way to flow just like the flow chart that was posted. Example was the flag of surrender comment. She hesitated until she found the right one to use. During her debate Geraldine Ferraro reacted like a human and not a robot as did Palin. When Joe responded to her Mother Badge comment with his brave comment saying the notion because he’s a man he’s not suppose to understand how mothers feel and worry, her response was seen as cold. I noticed she was shuffling to find the right paragraph to use… just like the flow chart. It wasn’t that she was cold. It was because she barely understood what he was saying. She was too busy focusing on key words so she could find paragraph 10 as a reminder of what to say. She did not answer the deregulation charge or most of the questions, and when she partially did, she did not answer the question with depth, logic or truth, but with a chant. Not once did she answer a question with vision. Not once did she answer a question with knowledge, and not once did she counter with PALIN’S political brain. She stood their with a stern face, blinking wildly into the camera spewing programmed phrases and paragraphs. If anyone noticed each of her comments were recycled question after question and was why it was easy for her to stay in TRANCE.
The idea that Palin did “well” is subject to ones interpretation depending on which stage you put her on. American Idol? Shakespeare? Beauty Pagent? Local Debate forum? VICE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE FORUM? In the real world where the best minds sit she did terrible because she left the audience wondering what she stood for while unable to intellectually express herself as a world leader. For the average sane person she pissed them off for trying to play the fear card with those crazy right wing comments towards the end: VOTE FOR US OR YOU WILL DIE! And she got the story all wrong.
Fact is, the debate was set up to favor Palin’s inablity to DEBATE. They couldnt’ talk directly to each other and ask clarifications of what they said. Gwen did not want to jeopordize Obama’s chances by scolding Palin as she did CHENEY when a candidate strays from the question. Any redirection from Gwen would of had the WHINERS saying Gwen was too hard on poor Sarah Palin. If this is not SEXIST I don’t know what is. Never would I have thought women would join in to suggest that Biden should not be “hard” on poor little Sarah. To all those people who believe in equal rights they did an injustice in allowing such nonsense to be considered. Biden could of cleaned the floor with her, but he didn’t want to risk Obama’s chances by giving the right wings any opportunity to turn that into a media discussion blocking real issues this country is facing. Fact is ANYONE OF US could debate Biden in this type of setting and come out surviving.
Palin’s winking was an insult. A debate forum such as this one is a job interview for the 2nd highest office in our country. You gotta be crazy to have the audacity to wink during a job interview. Would you do that to a possible employer? Does anyone wink during an job interview?
Palin can survive when not countered directly with simple questions that prevent her from repeating republican chants. It throws her completely off the republican wagon of lies because easy questions forces her to think on her own.
Palin is PRO CHOICE and is too dumb to realize it! Any so called pro life woman does not have an amneiocentisis done at her age except to see if her life is in danger. If so, according to Palin a woman can kill a baby during pregnancy at the 3rd trimester to save her life. This is an outrage and not a PRO LIFE policy, but a PRO CHOICE one! Christian women who preach thou shalt not kill and are dead set against early abortions during rape and incest, except when it comes to their own life when god says it’s time to die a natural death by labor, become COWARDS and suddenly do not believe enough in god to meet their creator in heaven. This kind of natural death by god is considered a direct path to the pearly gates and here she is trying to prevent such natural process by having an amneocentisis. you obviously don’t have a clue about Palin. ProLife is her own opinion…not policy. Roe v. Wade will not be overturned. She is a fighter for womens rights. “EQUALITY” That’s all any of us have ever asked for. You may have a different choice about abortion than I do…I’m not going to judge you..Neither will she.

Amazing list of opinions! I especially enjoyed the one that said the Obama was raised by Muslim parents. How did that misconception get around? He was born to an atheist father, who abandoned him, and a mother, probably not too religious herself, who raised him along with his grandparents. He joined a popular Christian church with a huge membership as an adult, like most people when they have kids, and like most people, he probably didn’t agree with everything the preacher said and probably didn’t even go to services every week, so he might have missed some of his sermons. Nonetheless, hasn’t everyone who’s ever gone to church heard things from the pulpit they disagreed with? It’s the old guilt by association trap. Does attendance mean endorsement of everything said? I went to a Republican club dinner where my father, got an award. The things I heard blew my mind, including a call for drilling in the Alaskan refuge. My father, as a joke probably, had me on the program as a supporter. I hope I never run for office, because the way this country thinks, anyone who appears at any event is linked inextricably to whatever was said at that event, and I’d be doomed — since I’ve been a liberal democrat all my life.

Before you accuse others of being dumb, actually know the heck what you are talking about before you show yourself by the very label you throw at Palin and others. The vast majority of pro-lifers hold to a woman can choose to abort if having the baby means her life is in danger. And Christian pro-lifers are divided on the issue of abortion in the case of rape and incest.
And Christians don’t hold to dying rather than keeping the baby is what get them to heaven. We hold to what get us into heaven is Christ dying for our sins and being raised up from the dead, such that those who trust in Him shall one day be raised from the dead as well and spend eternity with God.
And the Bible preaches against thou shall not commit murder. It does not ban all forms of killings, since killings in wars and executions for things like murder are allowed.
So for you to establish hypocrisy, you would have to be able to accurately represent the pro-life (and Christian) position, which you failed miserably on all counts.
From the standpoint of the Christian conservatives, it is the pro-abortionists and pro-choices who want to force their brand of “morality” on the unborn child by killing the child saying the child has no right to live if they want the child around anymore.
