MSNBC’s Matthews Interviews Daughter But Fails to Disclose Family Relation

MediaBistro: On Friday's "Hardball," Chris Matthews interviewed a number of student members of the group Concerned Youth of America. One of those students -- Caroline -- is his daughter, a student at the University of Pennsylvania.

Matthews just put another bullet in the corpse known as journalism. God help us.

Karen   September 29th, 2008 - 3:36 pm

Wow, looking like a use piece of nose hair runs in the family. Matthews daughter looks like a bigger jerk than her dad, and no one thought that was possible.

Jim   September 29th, 2008 - 3:44 pm

No, tell me it ain’t so. Not Chris Matthews, not the words greatest and most fair and honest journalist. Oh, the shame.

lawboychris   September 29th, 2008 - 3:49 pm

Who cares? This is no big deal. Matthews is the most balanced tough journalist on TV today. Give him Meet the Press.

hanson   September 29th, 2008 - 3:54 pm

U of Penn??? Anoher expensive ivy league sink hole of minds and money.

Leslie in Texas   September 29th, 2008 - 3:57 pm

Okay, so who cares? Does this change the issues the kids were speaking of? Hardly, in fact, it just makes me like Chris more because not only is he a good Catholic boy but he has obviously raised a thoughtful, intelligent girl as well. Next story Breitbart, this time make it a real story with some substance to it.

americaspast   September 29th, 2008 - 3:57 pm

lawboychris, so what is your relation to Chris ‘ObamaMakesMeTingle’ Matthews?

banglijk   September 29th, 2008 - 3:57 pm

lawboychris, this is no big deal? You are seriously demented.

Steve   September 29th, 2008 - 3:58 pm

Think he got a tingle up his leg?

banglijk   September 29th, 2008 - 3:59 pm

Lesbo in Texas…..well, you are a lesbo in Texas.

noneya   September 29th, 2008 - 4:00 pm

Who cares???

Marty, Boston   September 29th, 2008 - 4:01 pm

Another “unbiased” interview from the left, made to appear mainstream and independent. MSNBC, a/k/a MSOBAMA

banglijk   September 29th, 2008 - 4:01 pm

Matthews, change the name of your show to “Hairball.”

John in SA   September 29th, 2008 - 4:02 pm

I think its should not matter whose children they were. What those young people were saying is absolutely correct.

Tobias2012   September 29th, 2008 - 4:03 pm

The MSM media can not be trusted period. They are no better than a Communist countries idea of free press.

Marjo   September 29th, 2008 - 4:06 pm

How can we ever have a free country f the very people (the 5th estate, the press) lies and doesn’t tell the truth? I fear we’re over the edge.

MadJayhawk   September 29th, 2008 - 4:06 pm

Matthews should be fired immediately for impersonating a journalist. It does not matter what the little robots said. It is obvious that they were lying to get on TV and the kid’s dad facilitated it and was probably high fiving them all when the camera quit rolling.

banglijk   September 29th, 2008 - 4:07 pm

John in SA (south america??)your absolute truth is not necessarily the absolute truth.

LensmanCT   September 29th, 2008 - 4:07 pm

This is pretty typical of Chris Matthews’ behavior. It gives me a tingle up my leg to know that out of all the UP students, he was able to find four that represented his views. (How impressive were those prison uniforms?)He was probably just jealous of all the attention that Luke Russert has been getting. It would be a real pleasure to see his daughter giving his eulogy soon. I’d even watch MSNBC again for that.

banglijk   September 29th, 2008 - 4:09 pm

We should have known it was his kid. Looks just like Matthews and Olbermann.

greatidea   September 29th, 2008 - 4:09 pm

The present economic mess affects us all in a very immediate way and the American public has a right to know how we got to this point.

I urge you to watch the you tube video listed below with an open mind, as an independent thinker. If you feel it has value, please pass it along.

Hey MadJayhawk, you are obviously a University of Kansas Alumni or currently attending KU. Did they forget to tell you that KU is a liberal school? Lighten up, the kids were telling the truth regardless of who they belong to.

… does obama know chris cheated on him ?
… is his daughter a virgin?
… has she ever aborted a baby ?
… does she think oral sex is sex ?

… maybe obermann will ask these questions .

Robert Frost   September 29th, 2008 - 4:23 pm

No, there is no problem with a journalist not mentioning the fact that the one of the people being interviewed is a relative. No problem my a$$. They are doing this to distract us from the real story. There is a law on the books already in regards to Fannie & Freddie. Bush’s treasury department and the FED decided not to implement the law.

Texas Hood   September 29th, 2008 - 4:24 pm

Yes, the little that was said I can agree to. I worry about my children having to foot the bill as well. That message and report would not have been a problem except Matthews forgot a simple tenet of good journalism: Full Disclosure. By omitting his relationship with the organization he was interviewing, and then giving their website free advertising, he threw any integrity of the story out of the window. It also makes one wonder how many of his other stories have been “set pieces.” That is news worthy.

Ann Onimous   September 29th, 2008 - 4:25 pm

Hard Ball?
More like t-ball.
Chris Matthews is pathetic.

Clyde Piper   September 29th, 2008 - 4:30 pm

With the exception of a few people posting, you people on this page are behaving like drama queens,,,is this important today of all days????

Our economy is in the crapper folks, who cares whose kids said what?? They happen to be correct, they shouldn’t get stuck with the tab on this major foul up. Trickle down economics my eye. This just proves those snakes on wall street needed strict oversight because they couldn’t be trusted!!! We trusted these crooks to do the right thing and now they have screwed the whole world!!!

Jenny   September 29th, 2008 - 4:43 pm

Yes, let’s put our own kids on TV, and hear them ramble incoherently with incorrect facts and call this news. You, sir, fell badly during the conventions, and are continuing to make an ass of yourself. Quit now while you’re ahead!!

Leslie in Texas   September 29th, 2008 - 4:48 pm

Jenny,

I disagree with you, these kids were anything but incoherent. They were extremely articulate and make a wonderfully cogent arguement.

bobbyfoxblog   September 29th, 2008 - 4:50 pm

I am surprised that this rediculously stupid story hasn’t shown up on DRUDGE yet. The dumb ones usually do. Great journalism Breitbart.

fred   September 29th, 2008 - 5:02 pm

Now lets see if all the democrats attack Matthews’ daughter relentlessly, the same way they attacked poor Bristol Palin, who unlike Caroline Matthews, is underage.

Here, I’ll give you a head start: The only reason Caroline Matthews isnt pregnant like Bristol Palin, is because no one would want to have sex with that.

Now go ahead and write your own anti-Caroline comments, and prove how unbiased you Democrats REALLY are….

Peter McGrath   September 29th, 2008 - 5:02 pm

More proof of the decline of seriousness in the 4th Estate. Broadcast and print journalism are now moribund. To have students talk about the national debt and ignore Congress’ complicity in the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac scandal is – itself – a scandal. And why won’t so-called “journalists” like Matthews talk about the corruption at Fannie and Freddy, and the Hill? It’s simple: Democrats are at the heart of the scandal. It is a $700 BILLION + scandal and the liars at MSNBC (Matthews among them) refuse to point out Congress’ refusal to rein in Fannie and Freddie’s excesses in ‘98, 2004, and 2005. By then, Fannie and Freddy OWNED the congressional committies that oversaw their activities through payoffs in the form of campaign contributions. Congressional corruption is thus at the heart of the most profound financial crisis in fifty years and our buddies in BIG MEDIA simply want to run cover for their liberal buddies on the Hill. Disgusting, Vile, Indefensible. Matthews isn’t a journalist; like Joseph Goebbels (also a liar), he propounds propoganda.

The Kids Have a VALID POINT   September 29th, 2008 - 5:15 pm

Who cares? The kids had a valid point:

NOBODY seems to be thinking about WHO is going to end up footing the BILl for all this reckless spending and out-and-out GREEDY DISHONESTY that’s wrecking our economy.

They should have added a RIDER to the Bailout bill (that just failed) that said ALL THOSE WHO WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS ECONOMIC DEBACLE HAD TO FOOT THE BILL FOR THE $700 BILLION. Am sure there were enough who GOT RICH off this Ponzi scheme in the past several years could pool their resources and BAIL US OUT.

Those idiots who refused to come up with a workable solution need to get BACK IN THERE, and revamp the Bailout Plan till it is ACCEPTABLE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, AND THEN PASS IT, DAMMIT!

IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE ACCEPTABLE TO EITHER PARTY, JUST TO *US,* YOUR F’G EMPLOYERS!, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

NobodyUknow   September 29th, 2008 - 5:27 pm

Barry,

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s stil a ham sandwich to me :-)

pulling my hair out!!!   September 29th, 2008 - 5:29 pm

Hey all you crazy people, who cares whose kid this is!!! Get out of you ‘us’ and ‘them’ mentality will you? We are in trouble here, we need a plan, I don’t know who in government I can trust anymore. I don’t want to be wandering on foot down the highway here in a few years because civilization as we know it has come to a standstill. If you don’t like Chris Matthews or NBC then turn the channel, this stupid report is the least of our worries.

Jersey Dave   September 29th, 2008 - 5:33 pm

“The Kids Have a Valid Point” has, well, a valid point.

I think the reason both parties split today was in part because people of both parties appreciate that the people who messed up need to be held accountable. And yes that also means Democrats in Congress who covered for Freddie and Fanny all the last few years.

At least there were a lot of McCain signs there, so maybe folks will realize that cutting spending of money we don’t have (fiscal conservatism) will be the key, as it was with the GOP Congress in the 1990s when we balanced the budget. (Remember it took the GOP COngress and Clinton working with them to do it – The only person who I could see working with both parties to do that right now, long term, is John McCain. Obama talks a game, but McCain has been there and done that before as far as _action_ with people from both parties.)

About To Retire   September 29th, 2008 - 5:34 pm

H*ll yea, make the kids pay. They’ve had too much already with Mommie & Daddie giving’em everything they want. They’re just a bunch of spoiled brats that don’t deserve half of what they’ve got. Well, they’ve received enough…time for the kiddies to start paying back. So what’s wrong if it’s in the form of taxes in their most productive years? That’s just life! If they’re so D*AMN smart, thay can figure out how to fix the problem when it’s their turn in office. In the meantime…Stop your whining. “Oh please don’t make me pay high taxes…boo-hooooo…I need my earnings to by the latest X-Box, the newest cell phone, or, I need to pierce my armpits or tattoo my sphincter.”

Lesbo in Texas   September 29th, 2008 - 5:54 pm

I think his kid looks strangely like Barney Frank. Or maybe it’s Webb Hubbell.

Geo Washington   September 29th, 2008 - 5:58 pm

The media is the single greatest threat to our democracy we face. It is not accountable, responsible, or honest. They stand for all that is worst in our society. They are totally corrupt and dishonest. This is just another example of nepotism and ethical misrepresentation.

ShutUpKid   September 29th, 2008 - 5:59 pm

We pay entirely too much attention to “kids” these days. Kids are kids. They don’t have a brain in their head until they leave home and make it on their own for 5 years.
America was at it’s greatest when kids were to be seen and not heard and least of all consulted over every little crisis by the liberal Democrats who are so clueless kids babel makes sense to them.

Tegan   September 29th, 2008 - 6:01 pm

WOW! WHAT A BOZO MOVE. You absolutely need to disclose that you are interviewing a family member. I’m sure all the morons who said it’s not big deal would feel that way if Fox News did it. Wow. I cannot believe no one is covering this. Talk about media bias.

SushiSashay   September 29th, 2008 - 6:09 pm

“MSNBC’s Matthews Interviews Daughter But Fails to Disclose Family Relation”

Just what kinda relation is it anyway?

NonyaBusiness   September 29th, 2008 - 6:39 pm

More Conservative press coverage. How can Obama ever win with the press so biased towards conservatives.

ttmich   September 29th, 2008 - 6:57 pm

OK! May be he shouldn’t do it. But, so what? What did he, or his daughter, get out of it? she might have a few seconds of fame on TV, but just like others.

brian   September 29th, 2008 - 7:01 pm

I’m concerned for Chris, he seems to be slobbering and droopy faced whenever he talks.
Maybe he’s suffering a mild stroke like McCain or maybe the tingle in his leg moved up to his face.

ChrisCommieWatcher   September 29th, 2008 - 7:04 pm

another fine example of a near communist at work.
I’m not sure you can’t put lipstick on a pig. Matthews is a pig, and he wouldn’t be any dumber with red lipstick. What a liar. Typical, very typical of liberals. No regard for the truth.

Barry McCockner   September 29th, 2008 - 7:35 pm

Have you ever watched the Chris Matthews Sunday Show on ABC? Every one of the commentators could be his children as he swoons over every one of their answers. Does he ever debate anyone who isn’t a dyed in the sheep hair Obama supporter?

RedneckResponder   September 29th, 2008 - 7:35 pm

Future zombie lib in the making.
Chris is really digging deep for stories now.
This is some hard hitting journalism.

TGood   September 29th, 2008 - 7:36 pm

Let’s face it, Chris Matthews has becomean embarrassment with his adoration of Obama. At one time, I thought he was capable of evaluating the political scene but his shouting down and outright nastiness towards anyone not adoring Obama has made him more of a typical buffoon.

MSNBC seems to think if they imitate Fox news, that will improve their ratings. Maybe that’s so. I think the majority of Americans will see it as two moronic cable shows pretending to give the news, when they’re actually manufacturing it.

BB Poster   September 29th, 2008 - 7:53 pm

OMG, this is the end of the world as we know it. Matthews has disgraced not only himself but the entire country. No wonder we are the laughing stock of the world. This is why the terrorists hate us.

Only a creep would interview his own daughter without telling us. This is a total slap in the face to those of us who never watch him.

These kids are morons. They don’t know what they are talking about. That is why they were talking to Matthews in the first pace. They are total losers. Nothing is going to happen to them or their generation unless they bring it on themselves. They have to learn personal responsibility but the will never learn it if they are being pampered by some Ivy League elitist college that forces them to spew liberal hate.

Matthews is a Communist Marxist Socialist Muslim Coddling Nazi twisted excused for a journalist. My dog could do a better job than him and he has.

dswilli   September 29th, 2008 - 8:12 pm

I’m just amazed that Chrissy has a daughter. Must have been a “Clay Aiken situation”.

noneya   September 29th, 2008 - 8:12 pm

Al Franken   September 29th, 2008 - 8:18 pm

Hey – that gives me an idea… I’ll write a skit for next week’s SNL where reporters at the Times speculate on whether Matthews is “doing that daughter”…

Oh, no – that won’t work…

McCain! Yeah – that’s it! We’ll have ‘em speculate on whether McCain is doing Matthews’ daughter…

Yeah… much better…

Brenda   September 29th, 2008 - 9:18 pm

MSNBC will be the government news organization when we become a socialist nation. That is why they are in the tank for Barack Hussein Obama. People should demand NBC do something about this partisan network. It is a good thing nobody is watching.

mIKE   September 29th, 2008 - 9:43 pm

What do you expect from a pussy like Chris? Where are the honest journalists? The ones who have the best interest of Americans at heart.

Chris makes good money endorsing bottom feeding. Hell he’s right up there with these civil rights leaders shilling for payday loan places and sub prime credit cards.
