If Republicans actually believe the way this is being spun by Republican operatives, I have pity on them. Surely they know the difference.
Sarah Palin seems like a great mother, a cool person to hang with, smarter than average, but she is probably out of her league in this election. Which is why the McCain team won’t let her out on her own except in tightly controlled circumstances. She isn’t ready.
If she is qualified because of her time as a mayor of a town with under 10,000 population, then so are the nearly 50,000 current and former mayors of such towns, not to mention the thousands of current and former mayors of larger towns and cities.
If she is qualified because of being governor of a state for two years, then so are the other 49 governors of states (including the 46 that are more populous than hers) and the nearly 500 ex-governors.
But she wasn’t picked for her experience. She was picked because a lot of people can relate to her and admire her. And she shares the cultural values of a lot of Conservatives who are lukewarm about McCain. That she is attractive to men (68% of whom like her as compared to 48% of women) doesn’t hurt either.
But she has never been involved in foreign policy in any way. She has never shown any interest. The same is true of economics, immigration and a host of other issues that presidential and vice presidential candidates, even Dan Quayle, had. In this way she is indeed politically disabled. Even major conservatives are saying that. It doesn’t make her a bad woman or a stupid one.
Disabled is not a politically incorrect term in itself. There are centers and stores and programs for the disabled and they are called that. People with various limitations refer to themselves as disabled.

Rangel, the dean of the New York congressional delegation, has faced a string of embarrassing revelations — he didn’t pay taxes on rental income for a beach house in the Dominican Republic; he used three rent-stabilized apartments in Harlem, including one for a campaign office; he used his congressional stationery to drum up private donations to a college center named after him.
He ended up writing a number of checks to cover taxes due on his 2004, 2005, and 2006 returns, related to the unreported rental income, said his chief of staff, George Dalley.
The federal government tab ended up being $4,803, according to Rangel’s accountants, while he wrote checks totaling $6,022 to New York State. The state figure includes a small percentage owed to the New York City authorities.
