I have been a big big fan of Conan for a long time. He is hands down the best late night talk guy around….But that joke was way over the line and I am not going to watch him anymore.

I probably disagree with Sarah Palin on almost every issue…but now, because of the jerks in the media…I hope she wins. The reason it is not a funny joke is that it is made about a minor. Regardless of anyones political position that is 100% unacceptable. Why use adult humor against children? That joke publically hurt a minor and will follow her for the rest of her life.

The slur against Chelsea was made by Rush Limbaugh when he had his TV show. His explanation that the graphic put up when he mentioned a “White House dog” was done by a technician without his prior knowledge, but even though I’m a Rush fan, his explanation rings hollow.

Also McCain slurred Chelsea at a 1998 Republican Senate fundraiser.

Bottom line, whether conservative or liberal, slams against children are wrong. It is bullying, period, no matter how it’s dressed up as humor.

Anyway, this whole discussion will be moot when McCain and Palin become the next leaders of our country.

Chelsea and Oprah are great commercials for make-up and plastic surgery. If makeup can make these two beast look good, then it works. Joke was not funny because its aim was to hurt the VP but misses the mark. It just reinforces what I have known of Conan for awhile. He really isn’t that funny. NBC (the Barak Obama media giant) again shows bad judgement in letting Leno go…the Tonight Show will just not be the same.

I agree with you that Conan’s remark was over the line, however. I don’t recall the media calling Amy Carter ugly but neither am I challenging your recollection. I couldn’t find any reference to it on the Inteernet but didn’t spend a lot of time searching. Found some right-wing bloggers saying things like, “The only good thing you can say about Chealsea [sic] is that she’s not as ugly as Amy Carter.”

Chelsea Clinton was made fun of, too, but not by the media. It was one of Clinton’s political opponents –

“Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno.” –delivered by John McCain at a 1998 Republican Fundraiser.

I do think things like that are offensive when aimed at children and agree with Mr. Obama that candidates’ children should be offlimits.

It might have been inappropriate, but not that late at night. And one of the reasons I’d consider voting for Palin is I have a feeling she’d be the kind of person who could laugh at that joke, especially in light of the story being so saturated in the media. It doesn’t mean the situation is funny, but with all the stuff that’s been flying at least that shot was lighthearted.

I think this shows the difference between the new late night comedians and Johnny Carson, who was, and in my opinion, remains, the Gold Standard in this venue.
Carson knew what was in good taste and what was not. He also knew what was funny and what wasn’t.

One thing you fail to mention is that McCain made a personal apology to the Clinton family for this crude lapse in judgment. It was a despicable thing to say about a child who’s only crime was to be in the periphery of the spotlight. I’ve always thought Conan had a modicum of late, late night comedic talent — but the pediphilic overtones have always troubled me.
