Woman Dies in ER: Calls to 911 from Hospital Lobby Ignored

Listen to the actual calls to emergency operators about the woman dying in the lobby of a Los Angeles hospital. The woman's boyfriend and a bystander call for help as she fails to get treatment in the emergency room.

i hope sum body sues the hospital and the 911 operators and any medical staff that just left her there should be charged with manslaughter

unreal   June 13th, 2007 - 3:20 pm

The 911 operators should be fired immediately. The nurses watching should be tried for manslaughter.

NEVER should have happened.

John   June 13th, 2007 - 4:16 pm

It’s hard to blame 911 operators. What were they supposed to do? The lady was already at the hospital.

I do wonder why the nurses wouldn’t help her though. It sounds like we’re not hearing the whole story. But, if this seems bad, imagine what HillaryCare would be like.

hollowdog   June 13th, 2007 - 4:45 pm

Gotta throw in the “Hillarycare”? This is a travesty and typical of health care in America. The average wait in an ER in Canada = 45 minutes.
And they have “Hillarycare”. The health care system here isn’t run by caring medical professionals, but by big insurance companies. Doctors and nurses spend more time filling out forms than tending to the sick.

General Jack Ripper   June 13th, 2007 - 5:06 pm

The hospiotal ER staff was totally occupied treating cuts and bruises to two drunken illegals who’d been in a bar fight…and a third, a 15 y.o. illegal who was calving out her anchor baby.

LA = Mexico….get used to it!
LOL!

JayJay   June 13th, 2007 - 5:11 pm

oh right- lets put the government in charge of health care. that will make it much more caring and efficient. not. 45 minute wait? ha for what, a tylenol and a kick out the door? what a joke. Why do you think canadians have sued their own government to allow for free access and choice of medical providers? Are you just regurgitating Michael Moore garbage or have you ever actually spent a night in a hospital in a socialist country? its a freaking nightmare- but if these kinds of episodes are what u want, then socialized medicine is for you.

delmundo   June 13th, 2007 - 5:18 pm

I hope they bring up some negligent homicide and or manslaughter charges, against the hospital and also but to a lesser degree against the 911 operator.

although he seems to be an bleep he probably isn’t a healthcare professional nor is he on the scene. If it weren’t the states I wouldn’t have taken someone calling 911 999(UK) or 112(Europe mostly) from an ER seriously.

If someone is vomiting blood in an ER just because of safety concerns for other patients and staff someone should have taken a look. And some wonder why they hate the US, this is utterly incomprehensible

Focus   June 13th, 2007 - 5:32 pm

Why is it that according to the news report only the hospital is being investigated and not the 911 switchboard operators (or if they acted according to procedure the procedure itself)?

Redneck   June 13th, 2007 - 5:37 pm

Hollowdog – This is TYPICAL in the US? Oh yes – I hear this story at least 4 times a week. I think General Jack Ripper has it right. LA got exactly what they have been asking for. Rights for everyone – even those who have not earned them by entering the country legally. LA is such a utopia. This is exactly what the rest of the US would be like if the Liberal Actors Guild was to have their way.

Enponya1   June 13th, 2007 - 5:42 pm

I watched a man come in a hospital emergency and die of a heart attack while begging 2 NURSES STANDING BESIDE HIM for help. You can’t blame the nurses–they were loudly discussing what shoes to wear with their bridesmaid gowns for an upcoming wedding–dicussing this important dilema for almost 10 minutes, when one finally poked the dead man and told him not to fool around and go to sleep–he has to answer her questions. The other nurse decided MAYBE she should take his pulse. Then both nurses did the entirely appropriate thing–THEY STARTED SCREAMING. True story. I hope the hopital and the 911 operator that said this wasn’t an emergency both get sued for millions.

R2D   June 13th, 2007 - 5:42 pm

Welcome to the People’s Republic of California. Viva Arnold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

George Martin   June 13th, 2007 - 5:55 pm

You get what you pay for and 911 operators are not paid that much. To them it is a paycheck. To be fair there are some that are dedicated and care. This isn’t the first case of incompetent people working for muncipalities with taxpayer money.

LMC   June 13th, 2007 - 5:57 pm

That family should own that hospital. I think the 911 operator was a little callous, but what could he do? They were already where they should have been and where they should have gotten immediate care. I fault the hospital and the people working admissions.

Keith   June 13th, 2007 - 6:02 pm

The villain here is NOT the 911 operators…what would you like them to do, have an ambulance respond to the ER lobby?? The only constructive thing 911 could have done would have been to have called the ER and advise them of the calls they are receiving.

In many ways, including the 911 operators in this story is using them to promote sensationalistic journalism. Let’s show in a little maturity on what and how we report. The REAL story here is that the hospital allowed the situation to deteriorate to the point that it did, not that 911 did not send someone.

BTW, I address this with having had over 30 years involvement with the emergency services, including 15 years as a Paramedic. Sad situation!

de   June 13th, 2007 - 6:56 pm

I agree that the 911 operators can’t be held accoountable here, however, I think that he should be fired for the way he treated the caller. He was totally unproffessional and callous. I wish they would identify this man. If the operators were thinking they would have tried to call the ER to inform them of the situation.

g   June 13th, 2007 - 7:35 pm

This is wrong. I thought health care workers were supposed to embody a higher standard of ethics. This would not necessarily have happened at any other hospital, but it could have. I agree, the 911 operators should be fired; but then again, what do their policies say about 911 calls received from hospitals. Hopefully this issue will be resolved and the emergency responders won’t be sued too badly.

Acton   June 13th, 2007 - 7:38 pm

To Hell with all of you that say the 911 operators shouldn’t be held accountable — they made a judgement without putting any eyes on the situation.

The standard operating procedure in a case like this should be to send a police officer to get eyes on the situation and make a judgement call from the scene.

The problem is that somehow 911 operators didn’t even TRY to gather more information, they simply dismissed the woman’s complaints and someone died. It happens all the time.

James Bryant   June 13th, 2007 - 7:39 pm

Ummmmmm no the 911 operator should not be fired. It is not his problem. This was a problem and failure of the hospital. You can not send a ambulance to the hospital to pick up a patient that is already at the ER, that is stupid. The 911 operator did the same thing. I work as a paramedic and the hospital is at fault here, i used to be a dispatcher, and i would have done the same thing that dispatcher did

Raoul Duke   June 13th, 2007 - 7:41 pm

Affirmative action in progress. That brother at the end should go back to his job at Blockbuster and let a pro handle business

jd   June 13th, 2007 - 7:42 pm

“This is not an emergency, ma’am”?! Vomiting blood in AN EMERGENCY ROOM is not an emergency? What, exactly, DOES constitute an emergency? Why did they not at least try to call the hospital and tell them? The worst that can happen is that it’s a prank, but at least they tried to save a life. Oh oh oh, that’s right….because they’re not in this business to save lives, they’re only there for a paycheck and will only do enough work for themselves not to get fired. But hopefully, now they will. It’s just sad that a woman had to die because they were lazy, stupid, incompetent, callous jerks.

Tom Steele   June 13th, 2007 - 7:44 pm

Ummm yes the 911 operator should be fired. I’ve heard 911 operators deal more politely with people who had cats stuck in a tree than that operator dealt with a caller who was dealing with a woman vomiting blood.

If that is the best the 911 operator can do, then he should seek another line of work. How about calling the hospital on another line? At the very least, not berating the individual on the line and telling him over and over that “it is not an emergency.”

Apparently it WAS an emergency. Jeez…

Dave Sterry   June 13th, 2007 - 7:51 pm

The real problem here is the patient. Why was she vomiting blood? Doesn’t she know that’s not good for her?

Some people…

vloxy   June 13th, 2007 - 7:52 pm

The American Indians were systematically removed during colonization.
The Jews were eliminated during World War II.
The Poor and the stupid are being eliminated today.
Why are you stunned? Just wait until you see the next stage.
Set your TIVO.

James Bryant   June 13th, 2007 - 7:52 pm

Vomiting in the emergency room is not a emergency for a 911 operator. It is not their problem. That is the problem of the ER. 911 is not a messenger for the ER. The fault here is at the ER not the 911 operator. I would have done the same thing. The situation sucks yes it does, but crap happens.

MARK MAUER   June 13th, 2007 - 8:00 pm

At the same hospital a man with a brain tumor was left untreated for four days and nearly died before his daughter took him out to another hopital. Story here:

scooter   June 13th, 2007 - 8:15 pm

It was LA so the ER probably was very busy serving people from other countries. The sue the hospital crowd is what cause’s people to not help. You get involved you’ll be in depositions and or lose your license. The 911 operator was correct- what can he do that a hospital couldn’t. My wifes a nurse and insurance companies don’t run hospitals. That is a statement of utter stupidity. You want Government Healthcare?? Go look at Government Housing and then get back to me with an answer.
VLOXY your still around so that proves your statement as nonsense. But you assume she was poor and stupid and all you know about her is she went to a hospital was ignored and is dead. Now you assume alot and look quite foolish doing so. Just more DEM BS everybodys poor and victims. What nonsense. And all “they” who hate the US should exit immediately and never return. “They” dont hate US though they envy the US. And delmundo your a tool who believes the media lies they tell in other countries about the US. Reality is its a damn fine place(the average places, not the big dirty criminal infested big cities)to be.

historybuff   June 13th, 2007 - 8:16 pm

They should all be fired. The nurses for not treating her and the dispatcher for not placing a call to the hosptial to advise them of the calls. The dispatcher said something like, “If you don’t like the service of the hospital you need to talk to the hospital supervisors.” Not pleased with the service? What is this, Burger King? The operator on the tape sounds like he’s annoyed because these calls are disrupting him.

Things like this should not happen in a country this wealthy. People should be streaming into the streets in protest! But I guess we’d rather complain about gas prices.

scooter   June 13th, 2007 - 8:20 pm

to vloxy-why do you assume she was poor or stupid? What do you know about the next stage? Are you in on it? Do poor people even have TIVO and wouldn’t they be to stupid to work it? You are something else you sanctimonious liberal fool.

vloxy   June 13th, 2007 - 8:30 pm

I never implied in my comment that she was stupid or poor.
My comment was an observation.
I have observed the American Indians being eliminated.
I have observed the Jews being eliminated.
I have observed the poor and the stupid being eliminated.
You are right, I am still around, and I am poor and stupid. It is a constant struggle.
I guess one could make the assumption from my previous comment that I implied that she was poor and stupid since she died within the walls of a hospital. How else can you die within reach of care? Was someone not smart enough to contact the head of the hospital? Were they not rich enough to pay for treatment and thus ignored? Had they had the money would a doctor be with her at all times?
My grandmother was kicked out of a hospital because she could no longer pay. She was sent home to die and that is what she did. The medicare ended. The insurance ended. The money from family ended.
This whole concept of holier than though of hospital responsibility is a pipe dream. It does not exist nor will it ever exist in our society as long as greed exists. Genetic engineers should cure greed first and then everything else will follow without any problems.
You will then say you can’t cure greed. Why not? Are you too greedy to not recognize a solution might not exist? I’m afraid so…

Tom Roberts   June 13th, 2007 - 8:33 pm

If you don’t believe people die like this in hospitals, you’ve never worked in one. This happens ALL THE TIME (but not with the publicity seen here).

Watch the highly accurate movie The Hospital with George C. Scott and you’ll see a very accurate view of what really happens in hospitals. Neglect kills more than you think.

scooter   June 13th, 2007 - 8:36 pm

Thats why you shouldnt unionize important jobs like nursing and police/fire and airport screeners. Bad apples are hard/impossible to remove from the job. Its ok in construction if some are layabouts but in hospitals its deadly. And its pretty harmful in education unless you live in a “good” school district-you know one were they vote (oh my goodness sshhh) Republican.

contextpleeze   June 13th, 2007 - 9:18 pm

So, what happened? Would it really be that hard to write a paragraph to give us some context?

Or did we just make this whole thing up?

YAy drudge!

tex   June 13th, 2007 - 9:40 pm

What are the “Reverands” going to do about this? O, nothing cause of her skin color. With HillaryCare would she gotten the same treatment as Paris Hilton? NOT!!!!

Hey Rev. Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson jump on this and make some headlines.

DRyden01   June 13th, 2007 - 9:56 pm

If John Edwards ever gets through with combing his hairr and looking in the mirror he should fleeec everyone involved with this outrage and get a big payday on this one!

Guy Fawkes aka LAblondguy   June 13th, 2007 - 10:02 pm

They already saw this lady 2 other times so they got sick of seeing her. They just assumed she was just another illegal wanting free heart burn medication.

Who is to blame? Bush and the Dems! for not building that wall!
If there were far fewer illegals, there would be less of those bad-eating-habbit, desease carrying, baby dropping, socialists in OUR waiting rooms!

James Bryant   June 13th, 2007 - 10:15 pm

Wow they already saw this chick twice. Lol… they were annoyed with her…. kinda don’t blame them for procrastinating about seeing her again. It’s cruel but she is what we in EMS call a “frequent flyer”. It sucks but yeah… understandable… oh and btw someone comparing healthcare to Burger King, well it kinda is. If you have a problem with the nurses, or the ER doc, you go to the house soup.

George   June 13th, 2007 - 10:25 pm

I hope that NENA / APCO watch this video over and over! More accurate E-911 GPS standards, additional spectrum and no new N11 numbers are just huge wastes of time unless operators use basic training and ordinary care.

sparky   June 13th, 2007 - 10:38 pm

This makes me sick! Paris HIlton or the likes of her would have NEVER been treated this way!!! I hope everyone who had anything to do with this case loses their license and has to do some serious prison time! And I hope the family of this lady sues and gets millions of $$$$$$$$$ for this horrible injustice.

To all who pray, I would like to ask each of you to just stop and pray for this lady and her family that full justice will be given to them. Every time you see it in the news, just take a minute or two to pray for them. Thank you.

Desiree   June 13th, 2007 - 10:38 pm

Watch Sicko and you will see why this woman was allowed to die, like thousands of others.

Missourimule   June 13th, 2007 - 10:47 pm

I just computed the average IQ of all responders to this site, and came up with a figure of 77. Originally I had intended to add my opinion, but have decided I didn’t want to lower the average.

amy   June 13th, 2007 - 10:52 pm

This is a shame!! I feel those so quick to acuse and blame have never worked in an inner city er, neither have I, so I’ll reserve judgement. We do not know the entire story, it sounds like it was a huge blunder, but not criminal. The 911 operator shoudl have been a bit more sympathatic and could have talked to a hospital staff memeber, instead of repeating it “was not an emergency”. As far as this being used as a platform to discuss the way our health care in run, it is what makes this land so great- Free Speech and Free Choice of where you get care! If the government ran it, you’d have no choice-t hought the libs were all about freedonm of choice? Ask the soldiers who were sent to some of the hell hole hospitals on the governments dime- think they would have chosen that type of care?? As far as Canada goes, anyone with a few bucks drives here to get care quicker, so they do not have to wait so long. Nuf said.

sweetpea   June 13th, 2007 - 11:04 pm

This is an outrage! What does it matter if your a U.S. citizen or not, we are all human beings. All the hospital staff involved should be charged with manslaughter. The 911 operators, police officers should be charged with being accessories after the fact! A civil law suit which includes punitive damages should be filed and all involved should be fired ASAP!!!

j   June 13th, 2007 - 11:07 pm

You can bet she was not a person who was here illegally else the outrage in public by the ususl suspects would have flooded the airways by now. Not to mention the usual charges of ? well you know the list. I wonder just what sort of “life saving” medical emergencies were being taken care of as she died? Want to bet that there was some of those treated as she died who could have waited? Remember this the next time you vote for a liberal! Its’ your life.

Jason   June 13th, 2007 - 11:20 pm

As a police officer that works in an ER, the media and you all need to learn the facts. Yes, it is a tragedy that this woman died in an ER waiting area. Unfortunately, it is a violation (Cobra, I believe) for a medic to pick up a patient from one ER and transport to another hospital. So when the 911 dispatcher advised the individual of this, they were 100% correct. The dispatcher was also right when he advised the patient or patients family to notify the ER supervisor. If nursing staff or the techs working the ER aren’t competant enough to realize that this individuals symptoms are worsening than someone higher up should re-evaluate them.

The dispatcher could have used different terminology than “this is not an emergency,” but past that he (they) did nothing wrong.

julius   June 13th, 2007 - 11:49 pm

the family of the woman that was neglected to death should sue the hospital. and the hospital should fire it’s incompetent staff. i almost want the C.I.A. to torture the incompetent nurses and doctors of that hospital. and the 911 operators also share responsibility for her death. they own a big part of her death. they are telephone operators and are in no way qualified to determine, by phone, what situations are emergencies. they serve only as the ears of the police and emergency responders. since when have we used our ears to decide on things? never. we use our brains. the police and ambulance personnel decide what constitutes an emergency. determinations are not for these uneducated 911 operators to make. again, these 911 operators are merely telephone operators and should not be making life-n-death decisions, especially not by phone! ridiculous. they need to be caged in guantanamo and made to listen daily to the recordings above. and once imprisoned they can revert back to their former status – totally useless – and not be an inadvertent danger to anyone. seriously, let’s get these dumb people away from these important posts.

rob   June 14th, 2007 - 12:10 am

I blame all the illegals there that the hospital is taking care of. Fix that and you might actually get to see a nurse

Stew   June 14th, 2007 - 12:17 am

Someone needs to be held accountable for this, but certainly not the 911 operator. The lady was already at an emergency room for pete’s sake! It is the hospital personnel who are at fault here.

bloodhound   June 14th, 2007 - 2:31 am

They need to sue the hell out of the hospital and 911! That is what happens when people with no education are put in charge, total chaos!

smoke grenade   June 14th, 2007 - 3:41 am

I am a 911 operator and a former EMT and I would have done the same thing. The job of the 911 operator is to send the ambulance to the scene of the emergency. The job of the ambulance is to transport the victim to the hospital. Emergency ambulances do not respond to the hospital to take you somewhere else if you don’t think you are getting the proper medical care there.

wellfow   June 14th, 2007 - 4:34 am

You were a 911 operator smoke grenade? What a Jackass. No wonder this woman died, people like you. Get it through your skull, emergencies can happen at emergency rooms. If there is a shooting at a emergency room, you wont send an officer over there? If someone dying is not is being ignored an officer needs to be there to assess the situation. 911 operators are not paid to have opinions, juries are nutsack. And I am sure they will.

wellfow   June 14th, 2007 - 4:48 am

Hey Jason, you are a police officer at an emergency room? You are dangerous and need to be fired. Seriously you have got no brain. How does it feel to slob through life with a “I just do what Im told and what the books says” attitude. Jesus Christ. What if a woman is choking in a emergency room and nobody is helping, what would you do, stare like a moron and do nothing? What if the nurses refuse to “go get higher ups?” What if those “higher ups” do nothing? Go over and help you heartless moron.

HEh   June 14th, 2007 - 6:09 am

Squeaky wheel gets the grease! This situation is horrible and I hope there is some retribution for the guilty parties.
But listen friends.
If this ever happens to you stagger over to the nurses desk and puke your blood all over their desk. If that does not work then make sure the next load lands on them.
That should get their attention.

James Bryant   June 19th, 2007 - 1:24 am

Ok…. speaking on behalf of most of the people in this country who are medics and are dispatchers i say this to the public….. get over it. Yes the situtation sucks, millions of lives are saved each year and a few people die and they make such a big deal out of it. Yes it is horrible, however crap happens. You people say that you don’t like how our policies are or how we do things, well they work. Let us do our job and shut your mouth when you don’t know anything and just want to point fingers. Few people die out of all the millions that are saved each year… not bad, one less illegal around to be honest
