Movie Trailer: ‘Hari Puttar – A Comedy of Terrors’

AFP: The makers of Bollywood film "Hari Puttar," which has prompted a lawsuit by Hollywood studio Warner Bros, say the flick has nothing in common with the Harry Potter movie series. The Hollywood studio, which owns the rights to the boy wizard movies, has taken the Indian producers to court over the film's title, which it says sounds like Harry Potter. "Our film bears no resemblance to the Hollywood film Harry Potter and it is a completely different story," said Munish Purii, chief operating officer of Mumbai-based production house Mirchi Movies Ltd, late on Friday.

Except for one shot of an old-fashioned train station, the whole thing is way more reminiscent of Home Alone than anything else. Not sure if the difference in plot helps their case though. Is Hari Puttar a common name in India?

Anyone here ever heard of branding? Brand name recognition is very important to businesses. For example, when you think of soda you probably either think “Coke” or “Pepsi”. These two soda manufactors have spent extreme amounts of money and time to build brand recognition. What if someone were to create a new soda and named it Koke-a-kola. Of course Coke would sue to protect their brand recognition.

Harry Potter is in fact a known “brand” name. When someone tries to profit through exploiting a known brand name the original owners have little choice but to sue, otherwise they risk losing the brand recognition that they’ve struggled to build.

When this studio decided to remake Home Alone, which they should be sued for as well, they should have at least chosen a unique name. Yes, Harri is a common name and Puttar translates to “son”. I think the studio discovered this little bit of information and decided to exploit that information in order to attract attention.

Look at how much free advertising they’ve garnished already! This film is getting INTERNATIONAL MEDIA ATTENTION THAT IT OTHERWISE WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN OR WOULD HAVE HAD TO PAY FOR. Open your eyes guys, what this studio did is shamefull and very illegal.

Looks like home alone and Mcculky Caulkin should get in on this action too.

I don’t see why Warner Bros. should be upset. Hari is a common name in India, that is true. But this movie seems to reek of Home Alone…I guess India didn’t get to see that film in the early 90’s(was it)?

Geez, can they do nothing original? Rip off of Home Alone, and steal the name of Harry Potter to get attention.

I hope Warner Bros. sues them back to the 10th century.

What a frivolous suit. Why does Warner Bros. even have a problem with this when people can get away with movie titles like Alien Vs. Hunter, which is a direct rip-off of Alien vs. Predator in plot, concept, etc.?

Ummmm, I would think the jidiots in Hollywood would be more concerned that this is a ripoff of the “Home Alone” movies rather than “Harry Potter”. What a bunch of lame brained jidiots

Is it lawsuit time again? Is Hollywood now pulling that tiresome old lawsuit gag? Didn’t the recording industry get egg all over its face for suing single moms whose seven year olds – egads! – downloaded some toonces?

Hari Puttar sounds like a powerful film, doesn’t it? Isn’t the risk of filing nuisance suits the fact that public sentiment always flows to the defendants and more attention is inevitably drawn to the matter that the plaintiffs are trying to bury?
