School Principal Dies During Root Canal Surgery

"She was a great lady รขโ‚ฌโ€œ for the kids, for everybody. She just took care of everybody at the school. Those kids are all going to miss her very much. She took care of me like I was her son. I'm the same age, but she just took care of us very well."

This is an especially irresponsible bit of reportage.

First, regarding the “probationary” status of that dental practice: more often than not, medical providers find themselves disciplined over some trivial matter of record-keeping or billing, not remotely related to the quality of care they provide. Hartman has no business reporting the state’s disciplinary action against the dentists unless she can report the underlying facts.

Second, I don’t think people die during root canal surgery unless some other medical condition is involved. I just went through one of these procedures, an especially difficult one that required over four hours in the chair. I was not under general anaesthesia, and I’m not aware of any dentist who uses it for root canal work. While I was numb to any pain, my tension level was through the roof during the last hour or so. I suppose if I’d had an undiagnosed cardiac condition, I might have had a heart attack, but I didn’t.

My point is that the average root canal procedure is not the onerous deal that stand-up comics would have you believe. And I think the media does a disservice when it reports a tragic story like this in a way that will potentially frighten people off maintaining their oral health. More than ever, oral health, in particular periodontal conditions and root failure, has been linked to all sorts of life-threatening conditions, including heart failure and stroke.

So maybe the real story is that this principal, scared by what she’d heard about the procedure, delayed doing it until the oral infection had compromised her overall health. Too bad the TV newsies won’t be bothered to explore that…

Hey Blogger1947:

Spoken like a true dentist, or at least a lobbyist for the dental industry. Allow me to ignore all the manure you spewed. This dentist killed a person and deserves to pay. At least as much as Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer paid. Because this “professional” is no better or worse than those serial killers. Enough said.

I’m sure she had some sort of undiagnosed heart condition. There are several kinds of otherwise benign conditions that are extremely aggravated by certain classes of anesthesia, and can result in a heart stoppage. Dentists know this, and should be required to have portable defibrilators in their offices, though.

Take it from an old principal, if stress at school didn’t kill her, a mere root canal wouldn’t.

Hey, Surreal Deal: Sorry, Blogger1947 & Ken are dead on, and you’re . . . still in your mom’s basement apparently.

Oh, BTW, I’m sending the evil Dr Endo to stalk you until you graduate from high school.

Real Deal:

My point, and I do have one, is that nobody will know WHAT killed this woman until there is an autopsy. And the TV newsies ought to have the professional restraint to report only what is verifiable and relevant until more facts are known.

My only contact with the dental industry has been as a steady, cash customer for my entire adult life.

Hell people die having sex, jogging, ect. when the old ticker decides to stop tickin game over. Just because she is sitting in a dentist chair does not make it the dentist fault. Who knows maybe she read one of RealDeals posts that day and it bothered her to the point of physical illness. Yea maybe its The RealDeal fault.
