Mormons and Race: Romney’s Eyes Well with Tears on ‘Meet the Press’
“I can remember when I heard about the change being made. I was driving home from, I think it was law school, but I was driving home going through the Fresh Pond rotary in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I heard it on the radio and I pulled over and literally wept. Even to this day, it’s emotional.â€Â

Annnnnnnnd……what’s the big deal?? I swear, the media finds every minute thing to report about that means little to nothing about the Presidential race. Who cares if he cried!!! All that is important is that he felt the those of African decent were finally recognized and rightly so!!

He’s as slick and oily as Clinton was. But if he’s sincere about this he’s living in a racial fantasy-land.

Mormons WERE racist, “officially” till 78, yeah right, I can’t believe “god” took so long to speak to the Mormon Church leader about race equality, woa, so God wasn’t watching everything that happened between Rosa Parks’ incident and
Luther King’s assassination. Having a Mormon president its gonna be lots of surprises, what if God takes too long to “speak” to Romney or his leader about important issues like the so called “war on terror” or immigration, border security,
social security or health insurance? Nothing like having a President who belongs to a cult.
Everyone whould read these verses before they comment…
Acts 10:9-35
Peter the apostle prior to these verses only took the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Jews. All other people of the earth were excluded. Was Peter racist? I don’t believe so. We know that after the vision he recieved that the gospel went to all the earth, just like the revelation recieved in 1978. Blacks were always welcome in the Church and many attended the entire time there was a restriction of the priesthood. Many Faiths restrict leadership to men..does this make them sexist? Mormons believe in living Prophets and Apostles who maintain the same authority of Peter, James, and John. Mormons view the Bible as the product of those who had living Prophets as their contemporaries. They belive it, but they also understand that just like the New Testament ushered in a new time, so has new revelation ushered in our time. God isn’t going to come again without preparing the world through his prophets. “Orthodox” Christianity views the Bible as the source of religion. Although true religion is contained in it’s pages they refuse to accept that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and reject the idea that God still speaks to mankind. They believe the Heavens have been sealed. The problem in the “orthodox” religious world today is that without belief in a living Prophet, they are left to decifer the bible on their own. This has led to literally thousands of different versions of Christianity. Christianity isn’t some divine smorgasborg where we just pick and choose what we want to believe. The heart of Mormonism is the belief in a real living Prophet who sets the record straight…just like in times of old. A man just like Moses walks the earth today and literally speaks to God. That’s where Mormons part paths with “orthodox” Christianity. Two words; Modern Revelation (Amos 3:7)
It has always taken faith to believe in living Prophets, and it always will.
BMOC, well put. Further more, before people start accusing the LDS faith of “racism” it would be well to note that all through LDS doctrine it is the weak and despised, the lower classes of people, those that are following false traditions because of what their forefathers were taught that have the greatest and most tremendous blessings waiting in store for them.
For all the bluster that we hear about “racism” in the “Mormon” church, anyone who reads the Book of Mormon will realize that one of the main messages of the Book of Mormon is that those who got the short the end of the stick when the Europeans came to this new continent will eventually have all the covenants that God made with their ancestors fullfilled. The Book of Mormon is the most unracist book I know of because it makes it clear that in the future justice will be done and those that were cheated or oppressed in anyway will ultimately have the victory.
I’m sure there are special blessings and purposes that God has in store for those black men that were once denied the blessings of the priesthood as well.
Vote for whoever you want in 08.
Clearly a man who is not shaken by those who who question is faith- I don’t agree with Mitt politics, but he seemed pretty genuine in this meet the press interview.
What’s the big deal? I cry everyday. I’m crying right now….I have issues.
JohnDecember 17th, 2007 - 4:17 am
He needs to explain his relationship to Jesus Christ, and just how he will promote the use of state power to advance the cause of Jesus, and to bring about a Christlike society that uses the force of law to bring the unsaved to Jesus. It’s time for evangelical Christians to demand official state sanctioned and enforced Christianity, and to enforce the correct and proper application of true Christian laws and principles. We have the political power to bring this nation to Christ and to punish those that would oppose us, and we need to do that now.
Ken JensonDecember 17th, 2007 - 4:41 am
Just another flip flop. Are blacks okay with god or aren’t they?! We need someone with a strong relationship to lord JESUS so HE can lead us from sin and wash away all of the sinners and MONEY CHANGING JEWS.
BMOC, you’re confusing denomination with Christianity. There are no revisions of Christianity. The various denominations have interpreted from a human perspective. Christianity is the same today, yesterday, and forever. Being a mormom is not being a Christian. Yes, I know that will offend many, but it’s simply the truth. God didn’t speak to the Mormon Church in ‘78 and say Blacks now deserve equality just like the rest of my people. Jesus died on a cross for our sins and afforded us freedom (to all people) from our own damnation. Repentence of our sins and acceptance of Jesus as our savior is the only way. God loved us so much he gave us free will. What have we done with this freedom? Well, racisim would be one of many unfortunate examples. God has never denied any race the eternal gift of salvation. No one knows when our Lord will come back. You also forget to mention the Holy Spirit. As Christians we don’t blindly decipher the Bible, the Holy Spirit speaks to us. Before his ascension to heaven Jesus said I leave one with you (Holy Spirit), you are not alone. I certainly believe in Prophets but the closest modern day prophet I’ve witnessed might be a Billy Graham. Christians are equipped with all they need in preparation of Judgement Day.

I find out that many mormons are jews and they consider the US THEIR land from GOD.
Somebody know more?

John,
He DID explain his views on Jesus Christ – didn’t you watch the “Faith in America” speech he gave last week? You’re asking too much – more than the Constitution allows, frankly. Leave it to Americans to vote their conscience based on how they think a person’s values square with their own, and be glad you have the same right.
You’re ideas about the role of Christianity in goverment are more akin to radical Islam than anything else. “Bring about a Christlike society that uses the force of law to bring the unsaved to Jesus”? Have you heard about the Constitution? Have you not heard about the 1st Amendment? It doesn’t advocate for religious coercion. What you are talking about isn’t just zealous, it’s treasonous. The Jesus I know would never use force of any kind to save souls, and the country I believe in will never (I hope, anyway) tolerate such attitudes about manipulating the law to advance a social agenda. Your approach is as bad as those who consider the constitution a living document and want to do away with its most valued and treasured provisions – those very provisions that have preserved our right to worship how we please for over 200 years. Be glad someone doesn’t have that kind of power in our country – otherwise, our rights would be threatened as well. Think about it.

Changed their mind in 1978 about race? Because God came to them and told them too?
DOUCHBAGS one and all. And he cried about it? Why not cry because blacks are ruining our country? Why not cry over black on black crime? Why not cry over Africa?
I always thought that Mormons were fruit loops – this guy proves it.

Steve WatsonDecember 17th, 2007 - 8:42 pm
According to wikipedia, Romney graduated from law school in 1975, 3 years b/f he allegedly “pulled over and literally wept.”
From wikipedia: “In 1975, Romney graduated from a joint JD/MBA program coordinated between Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School. He graduated cum laude from the law school and was named a Baker Scholar for graduating in the top five percent of his business school class.”
“BMOC, you’re confusing denomination with Christianity.”
So are you saying that Catholics, Lutherans, and Episcopalians (even the Gay ones) are all granted the same Salvation even though their doctrines are vastly different? God is not the author of confusion. Why would he tell catholics to baptize with a sprinkle and Methodists to baptize by immersion? This doesn’t sit well with a rational mind.
“There are no revisions of Christianity.”
Hello, what about the Mormons? I would think the word restore is more appropriate then revise though.
“The various denominations have interpreted from a human perspective.”
What does the book of proverbs say? Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. I think you’ve just explained the problem with so-called “orthodox Christianity”
“Christianity is the same today, yesterday, and forever.”
I agree wholeheartedly. That’s why I referenced Amos 3:7 earlier.
“Being a mormom is not being a Christian. Yes, I know that will offend many, but it’s simply the truth.”
It doesn’t offend me simply because it’s (A) not true and (B) you have nothing to back up the claim. If you are stating that Mormons are not a break off from Catholisism like the rest of 4th century Chritianity then I agree even more.
“God didn’t speak to the Mormon Church in ‘78 and say Blacks now deserve equality just like the rest of my people.”
Once again…how can you make this claim? Can you prove that God spoke to Moses? Can you prove anything related to God’s dealings with mankind by scientific methods? I again refer you to the verse from Proverbs. I am glad that you recognise God views Mormons as “the rest of his people” though.
“Jesus died on a cross for our sins and afforded us freedom (to all people) from our own damnation.”
Here’s an opportunity for me to teach you some truth. The Atonement of Christ was two part. The death and resurrection of Christ broke the bands of PHYSICAL death allowing all men to be resurrected one day. Christ also suffered in Gethsemane where he ‘prayed to his Father’ (another proof the Trinity doctrine is not Biblical) where he bled from every pore. It was in that garden the he took upon him the sins of the world so that mankind through faith, repentance, baptism, etc. can overcome SPIRITUAL death. This is good doctrine. It’s rests well with a rational mind.
“Repentence of our sins and acceptance of Jesus as our savior is the only way. God loved us so much he gave us free will.”
See! We do have some common ground.
“What have we done with this freedom? Well, racisim would be one of many unfortunate examples. God has never denied any race the eternal gift of salvation.”
I agree that we have free agency, I don’t think racism is something you can pin on Mormons though. It was Joseph Smith Jr. who ran for President as an Abolishionist..why do you think the mob killed him? Mormons have had Blacks in it’s membership through all of it’s history. They have always been treated with dignity and respect and never been denied salvation. In the Old Testament and even today in the Jewish Faith only those who are descendants of Aaron can hold the Priesthood. Are they guilty of nepotism? What about the Episcopalians who just split because of a disagreement about Gays in the Priesthood? Are the ones who disagree guilty of a hate crime? all I can say is that God’s ways are not man’s ways. Gods ways are always unpopular with the masses. Try reading Acts 10 again.
“No one knows when our Lord will come back. You also forget to mention the Holy Spirit. As Christians we don’t blindly decipher the Bible, the Holy Spirit speaks to us. Before his ascension to heaven Jesus said I leave one with you (Holy Spirit), you are not alone.”
I agree nobody knows, but we do know we are in the last days. I’m actually very happy you brought up the Holy Spirit. There isn’t a Mormon Missionary who has ever been called to serve that isn’t taught that it’s the Spirit that converts. Latter-Day Saints and those preparing for membership are taught that they MUST pray to God for a spiritual witness that the LDS Faith is true. It is almost comical how many anti-Mormon books tell the reader to NOT pray about Mormonism. They would rather have you trust in the ideas of man then the Spirit of God.
“I certainly believe in Prophets but the closest modern day prophet I’ve witnessed might be a Billy Graham.”
Wow, now Billy Graham is a good man, but first of all he’s never claimed to be a prophet. If you would like to witness a real modern day Prophet go to LDS.org and search Gordon B. Hinkley. This is a man who actually claims to be a prophet. A modern day Moses.
“Christians are equipped with all they need in preparation of Judgement Day.”
What about all those millions upon millions who have never heard of Christ and died in ignorance? Are they equipped? While your pastor himms and hawws and gives you his opinion on the matter I can tell you the answer. Mormons hold the restored doctrine of redemption of the dead. That’s why Mormons build Temples. search ‘baptism for the dead’ on LDS.org.
I wish we had all answers but we don’t. Mormons are required to have faith also. We definitly have more answers then 4th century Christianinty though and I’d admonish you to search the answers out to further equip yourself. Intelligence is one thing you can take when you die. Of course…don’t take my word for it. Read the Book of Mormon, get on your knees, and ask your Maker if it isn’t true. He’ll tell you in your heart by that Holy Spirit you speak of. That’s what I did.

I think Mitt should put the magic stones in a hat and then turn off all the lights and then give his answers.
By the way I have a couple of unicorns and some goblins for sale. Because from all these posts you all are prime targets for niche market of mythological merchandise.
Mbeli SmithDecember 17th, 2007 - 10:36 pm
I can’t begin to imagine whats more ubsurd, the notion that Mormon church is not a medieval, racist insitution anymore – or the collection of religious nuts and supremacists validating/denouncing Romney’s comments.
The Mormon Church is a backward puritan institution, as is EVERY church in this country. Do the rest of us a favor and march into the Atlantic.
I can understand an agnostic or athiest disputing Mormon beliefs… but a fellow Christian? An attack on Mormons is an attack on all Christianity considering you can use the same arguments directed toward modern LDS prophets on all those ancient Biblical prophets. Those of you who are Chritians should be siding with Mormons. An attack from secularism is ultimately an attack on all religion. Think about it.
toddDecember 17th, 2007 - 10:53 pm
Yeah, I’ll bet he pulled over to side of the road and cried. Like, “Oh my God there are going to be coloreds in the temple. It will ruin our pristine white uniform look!”

BMOC…excellent points. You will never get the “Christian” world to beleive many of your words. They study virtually nothing outside a few selected “grace” verses and the book of John. It comes down to this: if your a conservative and a Mormon, you are finished! Why don’t we hear anything about Harry Reid? Exactly. Liberals rule the day. I hate to say it, but, get used to it. And, of course, watch them bring America right down. Nice job though.
