Wow,this little punk said that the gas tax reduction would be too little to even matter, yet inflating tires and getting a tune up will provide just as much as drilling? Well, let’s get tune ups, inflate our tires, drill, reduce the gas tax, and build new refineries. Then, we would be doing great, NoBama. BTW, dipstick, why is it that all you liberals are ALWAYS for reducing our freedoms and asking us to use less? What a bunch of f’ing control freaks.

So, if I inflate my tires and get an extra mile or two per gallon, lets say two to give this guy the benefit of the doubt, and I drive 10000 miles in a year what will that actually save me. I want stats.

SCENARIO 1:

25 mpg – uninflated tires
10000 Miles
400 gallons * $4 per gallon = $1600 cost

SCENARIO 2:
27 mpg inflated tires
10000 miles
370 gallons *$4 per gallon = $1481 cost

SCENARIO 3:
25 mpg uninflated tires
10000 miles
400 gallons * $2.50 per gallon = $1000

Ric, Bush has increased the federal budget to a $500 Billion deficit, (when the deficit was $450 Billion in 2003, his campaign promise was to cut the deficit in half by 2006 btw.) We are in a hole that we need to get out of. If you cut the gas tax you have to increase the income tax to offset the balance. We cant keep borrowing money from China and Japan our dollar will be worth nothing, the national firesale will continue, and our economy will be in the gutter. The answer is not handing over federal land to the oil companies, We need a combination of all schools of thought here republican and democrat, We need to enact a resolution to force the oil companies to drill on the land they already lease, build new refineries, and encourage conservation.

If the Dem Congress would just “say” they would drill for oil would drop drastically. The rest of the world does not want the US to drill for our own oil. Doesn’t anyone get this?

Most cars to day do not require tune ups for either 50 or 100,000 miles manufacturer’s suggestions. So if I had gotten one more tune up and inflated the tires lets say weekly, I even own my own compressor I would have done better.

Who are these fat cats you talk about? Maybe the millions of Americans who own the oil companies stock in their 401ks. We do need to drill here and drill now to get off of as much of foreign oil as possible while new technologies are developed. Al Gore says the Chinese will end up buying all the oil leases in 10 years or so and we should convert to solar. Who does he think will build all those solar pannels the U.S., no they will be made in China. The short term thinking of or congress is waht has gotten us into this situation. We need a long term strategy to over come this. As much as we might not like it oil is in our future for a long time. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a dreamer and a fool.

All nonsense aside, what this guy and many others are suggesting (rightfully so) is that Americans are GOING TO HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO MAKE DO WITH LESS and HOW TO STRETCH WHAT WE HAVE.

Why do some people take that as an INSULT or THREAT? It is PURE FACT. The world’s resources are dwindling and its population keeps increasing. We are ALL going to have to learn how to THINK FIRST before we USE DWINDLING RESOURCES–and that goes for a lot more than just oil and gas.

Americans have never (not since Depression Days and W.W. II) had to RATION MUCH OF ANYTHING, and the time has arrived when we really need to buckle down and ask “IS THIS REALLY NECESSARY?” before we utilize much of anything any more.

IF YOU EVER WENT TO SCHOOL DUST OFF THE OLD ECONOMICS BOOKS. DRILLING WOULD LOWER THE COST OF GAS BEFORE IT EVEN HIT THE MARKET. FYI-The industry seems to think the oil can hit the market in less than 4 years, and all respectable research organizations say we have more oil in this country than all of the middle east combined.

Here’ the problem. I don’t know what a proper tire inflation is, nor do I know when it’s the proper time to tune up my engine. Solution; a new government agency to inspect all vehicles and let us know what should be done. Think of all the new jobs this would creat! They could even charge us penalties if they find we’re not in compliance. Think of all the revenue that would generate!

If congress opens up drilling thus bringing more supply on line – the futures and commodities traders will sell their oil futures contracts thus dropping the price of oil.

Of course, the democrats in CONgress want the price of gasoline to be high so they can receive bigger tax revenue from higher gasoline prices.

And they have the audacity to talk about windfall profits.

Even if we did what lord Obama commanded, it would not lessen by one drop the amount of imported oil we use. We must still start to drill now while letting the enterprising spirit of America begin to develop an alternative for the future. We are still going to need oil for the future and I’d rather start getting it here.

Thank you for that. My example is to prove that Obama is wrong in his statement, not to suggest an alternative to his statement. Your flaming of me is pretty ridiculous. You assume I would not acknowledge your logic and on that assumption further assume that I’m stupid. Yes, obviously if we drilled and inflated our tires, that would be even better and save a little bit more.

Now what I would like you to understand is that I don’t want to use less oil. I want to be able to drive 900 miles to see my buddies who I haven’t seen for a year without having to think for a while about how I’m going to make that money. The less oil we use, the lower standard of living we have. Now you might 1. call me stupid for not wanting to save the planet or 2. call me stupid because you think that I will be able to make that trip once the price goes down. However, if were talking about using less oil to make prices go down (which is a valid point), once the prices go down far enough for me to make that trip, they will probably have risen again because people will have started to use more oil because it became more affordable.

Whatever happens, some people arn’t as stupid as you assume. I for one am certainly open for suggestions because I don’t know everything. However, I do know that I disproved Obama’s statement in 2 minutes using 7th-8th grade math. Yes we will save money by inflating our tires. That money will not be entirely substantial. If we went back and did more research, like Chevrolet has done, they find that having proper tire inflation can add 3% to your gas efficiency. If that efficiency is 25mpg, 3% of 25 is .75 miles, not the 2 miles I originally suggested. Applying that to our 10000 mile formula, you get 388 miles * $4 = $1552 cost …savings of 48 dollars over the year. Yes Obama is right in concept – proper tire inflation = savings, but he is wrong to suggest the savings will be monumental. It’s $48 dollars and it’s nothing new to inflate tires properly. The recent drop in prices of oil will save the average consumer $160 based on the same purchase of 400 gallons and the effective savings I’ve personally seen at the pump since two weeks ago of 40 cents per gallon. That happened without any oil hitting the market. Imagine what would happen if we actually started drilling?

But yeah, I’m stupid and don’t know anything.

Yes, those things do help some, but the thing that Obama just can’t hide is how stunningly stupid he is. And to think that as many as 48% of the American voters will vote for him!!!

Obama says inflating our tires will save as much or more than we can get by offshore drilling.

Let’s do some math. According the the US Dept of the Interior offshore reserves are approximately 116 Bill barrels.

At 20 Mill barrels/day that equates to 5800 days or 15.8 years — OF OUR ENTIRE USAGE! Proper inflation while a good conservation effort will only save 2-3% or about 11 days of oil. Note that this assumes that everyone is seriously deflated the actual amount would be significantly less. So in the worst case it would take 524 years for Obama’s suggestion to match what we can get offshore. Don’t get me wrong. We need to conserve, inflate, carpool, etc. We also need to drill, have nuclear, coal, natural gas as well as wind and solar.

Obama better get his facts straight or he will get smeared in the public arena as he should. I am sure mainstream media won’t do it but facts have a way of escaping even if the press ignores them! Smooth talkers can only go so far. We the American public are not as DUMB as some think!

I’m not sure where he gets this information at, but I keep my vehicles in top shape! Putting more air in my tires and having tune-ups and such, keeps my truck in top shape – a whopping 26 mpg – and yes, if I you don’t take care of your engine, you will loose a few mpg’s but not a lot! That is commone sense. Everyone should be getting tune-ups on their cars – you’re engine will last longer, but not solve this situation!!

In my town, at Chevron, regular is $4.15 and 1.5 weeks ago it was 4.41 – Now THIS is solving the $100 gas fee – not inflating my tires and engine tune-ups!

The remarks were less addressed to anything Obama (”this guy”) said and more to what someone earlier whined about, that they resented anybody saying we have to make do with less… The REALITY is:
We are all going to have to make do with LESS– Less gas, less oil, less water, less MONEY…
Compared to other countries, we’ve all lived a profligate, wastrel existence in USA for many decades and to quote some loud-mouthed, would-be “minister” who shall remained unnamed, the “chickens are coming home to roost.”

Why is it every time someone posts something that does not outright blast & condemn Obama, others often assume the poster is an Obama-fan?! He is basically saying that the money saved from the price of gas going down, as a result of offshore drilling, is about the same as everyone optimizing their car’s fuel efficiency – in other words, very little. It makes more sense to drive less, buy more fuel-efficient vehicles, and find alternative sources of fuel.

And is it so bad that we drive less? Do we have to have monster-size hummers that get 5 mpg ? Does it really make sense?

Number one killer of MPG is weight! Lighten your car as much as you can. When you buy a new car do not buy leather interior it weighs too damn much.

That is, however, no reason to not drill. You hear liberals spout off about federal oil leases that are unused…so why authorize off shore and ANWAR. I good example is natural gas in North Texas. For decades the technology to get the gas was not available. Now it is, so they are drilling everywhere. Most of the federal leases a have oil deposits that are not cost effective to attempt to recover…it would drive UP cost. Seems to me the logical approach is to get the oil that is cost effective now and save the other for the next technological advance occurs.

President Bush repealed the executive order prohibiting drilling and sent legislation requesting Congress do the same. Wow. I can not believe that nobody but nobody can see the real value of the US drilling for oil. It has nothing to do with us being “independent”. Every news article that I read talks about unstable conditions that the oils sits in. Every time that There is a report that IRAN might be attacked oil goes up. Now I may be a little be prejudiced but I believe that any oil wells that we have would be much safer and therefor more stable. That alone would lower the cost of oil.

The second part of the equation is that the US would start to sell oil on the open market and reduce the trade deficit. Now why does he not talk about that?

He did not pull the facts from thin air, he pulled them from a Department of Energy study, which states that some 3.56 million gallons of gas are wasted each day only because of incorrectly-inflated tires.

Add up the fuel savings available from proper maintenance, less aggressive braking and accelerating, and (god forbid) increased fuel efficiency in new vehicles mandated by the government, and then please reconsider.

Sorry, Victor, but this isn’t a zero-sum situation. The less gas we use won’t make a lick of difference, because the other developing countries of the world would buy it up just as quick, keeping it at $4 a gallon.

We need to drill as much oil as we can here, while we work vigorously for alternative, clean measures. No one is getting anywhere in this argument because everyone is so narrow minded as to think that it’s either one party’s solution, or the other. People can’t fathom that a combination of the two is possible, and probably the most reasonable/effective.

So, it seems that you’re the dumb one, Victor. Some liberals like you like to think you have common sense when it comes to economics, but can’t understand it when it doesn’t include the government in the equation.

1) ANWR is a small portion of the oil. We need offshore drilling as well, which includes a LOT more oil into the equation.

2) It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t produce oil for a few years. Few people realize that the price per barrel for oil is determined by trading on the futures of oil. And this trading takes into account the status of oil 8 years into the future. This is why when Bush lifted the offshore drilling ban, oil prices started to drop. So even if it took several years to get to us, prices would start dropping at the pumps in a couple weeks. Plus, we’d be a whole lot better off in 7 years!

It works, people! I put 75 PSI in my tires and I had to dump five gallons out of the tank after a fifty-mile trip.

In other news, Obama said that if every American only ate 50 calories a day BUT chewed 50 times before swallowing, that would be like eating a normal 2500 calorie meal. And that in itself would solve the problem of hunger in America, a much better idea than producing more food. Which would take such a long time to cultivate that it wouldn`t matter anyway.

Its funny to come back to this thread a year later and see the comments by the obama supporters. It’s obvious that the lefties have sold out capitalism completely. Drilling for millions of barrels of oil a day is obviously going to produce more gasoline (each barrel produces 20gal of gas) than inflating your tires.
