McCain Hits ‘Wrong About Surge’ Message Hard During Obama’s World Trip

"This is the same strategy that he voted against, railed against. He was wrong about the surge. It is succeeding and we are winning."

If it weren’t for the Surge, which Obama strongly opposed every step of the way, there would not be an Iraq today to host Obama’s photo op.

Dave   July 21st, 2008 - 10:00 am

Even the wording that comes ot of this administration is false.
A “surge” is a term to describe a focused movement of EXISTING FORCES to obtain an objecive.
What we really had was an “escalation”,that’s when you have to add troops due to the perception that you’re losing.

libsukbad   July 21st, 2008 - 10:15 am

The obama world tour commences, with all of his MSM groupies along for the ride. This shows just how dumbed down our nea led public schools are to allow so many ignorant, naive people in this country to think he’s anything more than an empty suit. A disaster waiting to happen, mostly propped up by star struck college students who don’t yet know the burden of excessive taxation and loss of freedoms(but they will).

Steve T   July 21st, 2008 - 10:16 am

This is the second time the leader of the Republican party (first Bush, now McCain) has claimed “victory” in Iraq.
Even McCain couldn’t describe it as more than a “fragile victory”.
The truth is that no one from the media or either major party is saying how that “victory” was obtained.
Isn’t is possible that the terrorists (remember them?) have their focus back to Afghanistan, thus casualties are rising there again?
The original invasion of Iraq drew the terrorists to that country. The surge helped push them out but they just simply went back to where there were less U.S. troops to deal with.
This is victory? Next time one of these candidates or commentators uses such a term as victory, they should be made to explain what exactly that means in these situations.
After all, we are still fighting this “war” against terrorism, aren’t we?

Steve T is an idiot   July 21st, 2008 - 11:17 am

The terrorists simply went back? Is that how it works? What a clown. Osama said Iraq was the central point of the war. Looks like Osama lost.

R.J.   July 21st, 2008 - 11:31 am

Maybe if the stupid voters are thinking about Obama being wrong about the surge they won’t think about how wrong McShrub was about supporting a war started with lies, or the trillion dollars it’s cost the voters, or the thousands of dead American troops, or the forty thousand that are missing arms and legs, or the million innocent civilians that have been killed, or the loss of credibility and respect in the eyes of the rest of the world. The success of the surge is temporary, unless there are 160,000 troops there for the next hundred years. Just how many trillions of dollars is Iraq worth? How many dead Americans is Iraq worth? The odds of winning in Iraq are the same as converting the christian world to Islam.

Dave   July 21st, 2008 - 11:56 am

Only fools believe that when the Iraqi’s demand our departure that we’ll comply.
We have something like a half billion dollar base there and we’re building more near the Iranian boder as well.
We’ll be there until our economy collapses or we have civil war and the troops are needed at home to quell the cities that are on fire.

R.J.   July 21st, 2008 - 11:57 am

McShrub is also blaming Obama for high gas prices. That is totally absurd. High gas prices are the result of being addicted to oil, not because of somebody being apposed to destroying the environment. What is really sad, is that there are so many pinhead voters that will buy the stupid shirt McShrub is selling. That is the same trash Shrub has been feeding this country for the past eight years, screw up the environment, the economy and the whole country with stupid policies, and then blame everybody else.

Airwick   July 21st, 2008 - 12:05 pm

If we drill for oil “off shore” and in ANWR will that oil stay here (in the US) for our consumption and energy “independence” or will the oil companies that operate the rigs sell it to the highest bidder on the open market?

Airwick   July 21st, 2008 - 12:09 pm

Sen. McCain may be “right” about the surge but he is still clueless about why we are in Iraq. His own statements reveal his ignorance on this issue. He has stated several times that if we leave “al-Qaeda will take over” and/or Iran will “take over”. Perhaps he should explain how this is going to happen. If he doesn’t know why we are there, how will he know when it is time to leave?

SoCal Patriot   July 21st, 2008 - 1:15 pm

What exactly are we “winning” in Iraq?

Oil Contracts?
Military contracts for KBR?
The bodycount?

Not quite sure what he means by “winning”…

If he means like:

US: 1,000,000 Iraqis/Afghanis killed
Iraq: 4,000 US killed.

Yeah, I guess that sounds like “winning” to me.

Amerika, F*** YEAH!

Hell, we’ve taken a million souls, what’s one more?

We are uber-pwning Iraq, and the liberals out there hate us Neocons, because whenever we have a problem, we kill it.

Namaste   July 21st, 2008 - 1:58 pm

It is truly encouraging to see the number of comments reflecting people who have been paying attention to what has really been happening in Iraq.
It is rewarding to note that there are people who understand that the Bush (small shrub) machine has no idea what they are doing nor have they ever gotten it right.
This is an unwinnable war. There will be no winners no matter when we pull out. We will have lost so much, and so will the Iraqis.
The fact that Bush still does not know how to speak the language and doesn’t understand military terms even after all this time, and has even been able to encourage a “military man” who “knows how to win a war” to use the same faulty language and thinking is a big clue to the sham and deceit we are still being treated to.

Has oreo thanked Mr. McCain, and Gen. Patraeus ? He would not be on his glamour tour right now if it were not for these men. What a typical…… politician.

McCain is off his meds again   July 21st, 2008 - 3:04 pm

Asked by Diane Sawyer whether the “the situation in Afghanistan in precarious and urgent,” McCain responded: “I think it’s serious. . . . It’s a serious situation, but there’s a lot of things we need to do. We have a lot of work to do and I’m afraid it’s a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq/Pakistan border.”

But as ABC’s Rick Klein noted: “Iraq and Pakistan do not share a border. Afghanistan and Pakistan do.”

“Now it seems that the Iraqi leadership is in line with the concept of a US withdrawal within the time frame originally proposed by Obama”
McCain said that Iraq would probably take control by 2010. Obama originally said he’d pull them out in 2009, then 16 months, then whatever it was he said last week. We’ll have to see what his next position will be.

Airwick   July 21st, 2008 - 4:29 pm

Obama’s position was that he would like to see US troops out of Iraq “sixteen months after he takes office”. That would put it sometime in the summer of 2010. This is also the time period that the al-Maliki government also has recently proposed. Fine tuning that date may seem to be “flip flopping” or “changing his position” to those who never miss an opportunity to criticize Obama, but I submit that his position is more flexible out of necessity, reflecting the situation as it exists “on the ground”. The main difference between Obama’s position and McCain’s is that Obama would like to see us out of there as soon as possible and Mr. McCain would like for us to be there as long as possible. John McCain’s position is for an open ended US presence with “permanent” bases similar to those that we have in Germany, Japan, and Korea. I am not sure that the Iraqis are so keen to this idea. Those large military installations that we are expanding in Iraq (near the Iranian border) are likely to be vacant now (at least as far as we are concerned). Even the Bush administration is talking about a withdrawal timetable. Of course they are calling it something else but it is in reality the same thing.

SoCaI Patriot   July 21st, 2008 - 4:43 pm

“Obama’s position was that he would like to see US troops out of Iraq “sixteen months after he takes office”.”
During the primaries he said, more than once, that he’d end the Iraq war in 2009. It’s just one of his many positions, liberals are just idiots… :D

Airwick   July 21st, 2008 - 5:02 pm

OK, so he would “like” to end the war in 2009. How is that significant? I would hope that we would all “like” to end that stupid war right now! Circumstances may dictate otherwise and keep us there longer than we would “like”. Mr. McCain, on the other hand, would “like” for us to stay there indefinitely. He still believes that if we leave “prematurely” al-Qaeda will take over. Just how is that supposed to happen?
Neoconpoops are so ignorant.

Airwick   July 21st, 2008 - 8:19 pm

SoCal,
Since you have all the answers, why don’t you answer the simple question, “HOW IS AL-QQAEDA GOING TO “TAKE OVER” IRAQ?” Just because al-Qaeda says that they want to take over does not mean that they will be able to do so. Try to think before engaging your computer keyboard. For al-Qaeda to take over or even destabilize Iraq they have to establish a base of operations. Where will this be, genius? You have all the answers. Who will be their support group? In order to engage in asymmetrical military operations you have to have more than “I want”; you need a base of operations and support. Where are they going to find it and how will they proceed?

Oh, and I am NOT a Liberal and that comment is something that someone like you would say so it was easy to fall for the “fake” SoCal. He has you down pretty good.

Rover   July 21st, 2008 - 9:20 pm

SoCal Patriot   July 21st, 2008 - 10:13 pm

“Just because al-Qaeda says that they want to take over does not mean that they will be able to do so.”
What makes you think they couldn’t have if we had ran away? It makes perfect sense that they could, just like the taliban took over Afghanistan.

“Who will be their support group?”
No nation is openly supporting them but where do you think AQ has been getting their support from all this time? It comes from where their suicide bombers and fighters come from. Did you think the AK-47 fairy was helping them?

“For al-Qaeda to take over or even destabilize Iraq they have to establish a base of operations. Where will this be, genius?”
Where was it you mean? They had a base of operations in mosul and baghdad. Remember, re ran them out of their strongholds.

“In order to engage in asymmetrical military operations you have to have more than “I want”; you need a base of operations and support. Where are they going to find it and how will they proceed?”
The Iraqi Army and police weren’t well trained and often ran away from fights at the beginning. You, once again, prove that you’re an idiot. The taliban ran off Russia and took Afghanistan while fighting from caves and remote villages. It doesn’t take as much as you ignorantly imagine, if the conditions are right.

“I am NOT a Liberal”
Yes you are, and you’re a liar.

“that comment is something that someone like you would say”
No, it’s not. You’re just stupid enough to think it is. Fools like you are easily fooled…
