Only between 5 and 12% owned slaves (i am a us hist teacher), the common number used is around 8 or 9%! Civil War was fought over states rights, plain and simple! Lincoln looked to end slavery without going to war, stop the expansion of it and let it die out, which means end trade of slaves! Okay, so here comes the slavery part.
Northern states for the most part stopped having slaves. Why, They found something better. Indentured servants.
An indentured servant is a laborer under contract of the employer for some period of time, usually seven years, in exchange for such things as ship’s passage, food, and accommodations.
A major problem with the system of indentured servitude was that in many cases, an indentured servant would become indebted to their employer, who would forgive the debt in exchange for an extension to the period of their indenture, which could thereby continue indefinitely. In other cases, indentured servants were subject to violence at the hands of their employers in the homes or factories in which they worked.
Of course some did have out and out slaves
So now we see that slavery was a big issue at the time, not only in the South but the North as well.
Of course we would have abolitionists (see how I worked that word in there) because we all know in our hearts that slavery is wrong. It was a large and sometimes violent movement. One that would have prevailed even if Old Abe hadn’t jumped on the wagon.

In January 1861, 7 states seceded from the union and were followed by 4 more. The original beef had to do with a ‘taxation without representation’ issue and Southern states were tired of supplying the federal government with money and getting nothing back. Two years after the war started Lincoln made his “Emancipation Proclamation” and declared that all slaves in the Confederacy should be freed. This was done for no reason other than to destroy the Confederacy’s ability to finance the war. The South was mainly supported by agriculture and the slaves (which had been bought from Northern slave traders) were needed for this. Lincoln’s Proclamation did not affect any of the northern states and slavery remained in effect in the north, until 1865.

There were an estimated 65,000 black Confederate troops of which 15,000 saw combat action and plans had been drawn for a Confederate States Colored Troops branch of the army but it wasn’t able to be finished. Those plans would have made the Confederacy, the worlds largest bi-racial army in the world and each black veteran was to receive bounty lands when they returned from the war. The continued claim that Southerners were racist fools that fought to keep slaves and that Northerners were noble people that fought to free them stems from people that either didn’t pay attention to their history lessons or people and groups that are trying to further agendas.

Lets face the truth, the North would never have won the war if they hadn’t of forced colored soldiers into fighting. That was slavery at it’s Worst, not only were many of them killed, they committed treason against their fellow members of their Race. After the South “lost” the war, many Blacks no longer had homes or food and had to wander in the forest existing on grubs and weeds.

The Confederate flag represents not only bravery but a humane concern for all races. Those brave young in Minnisota should be given medals for caring about the less fortunate rather than what the Northern Libs do which is just take advantage of them, force them to live in wellfare where they cannot better themselves.

As somebody already said, it was the Blacks themselves who started slavery. Whites were only following what somebody else had started. It wasn’t their fault. Anyway, the hole thing about slavery is mainly a myth, sure, a few white people and Jews owned slaves, but up North it was much, much worse, except they lied about it and pretended it didn’t exist. As history has irrufutably proven, slavery wasn’t a bad thing at all. It was basically humane.Blacks started it but after the people had been brought here, we Americans couldn’t just let them sit around starving and freezing so we gave them food and shelter and jobs. I understand they don’t appreciate it now and are always saying slavery this and slavery that but they are just trying to get more money out of hard working White people. That’s how they are. But we’ve done enough.

“The Truth” is right on every point. I grew up in the South and know that the Confederate flag has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with celebrating Southern heritage. The Civil War, initially, was fought over economic issues, not slavery. Lincoln made slavery an issue in an attempt to hold a higher moral ground towards the end of the war. I had ancestors who fought on both sides and am glad that the union was saved, but because the North won they wrote the history books, which have increasingly demonized Southerners. There were good and bad on both sides. Both sides had legitimate grievances to address. Painting history in only black and white obscures the truth of what really happened.

I hate to bring this up, but the U.S. SUPREME COURT even sided with the South when there was a states’ rights case that went before them in 1857!!

Alas, the executive and legislative branches of the federal government chose not to heed this ruling…thus forcing the hand of the Southern states and resulting in the War of Northern Aggression.

I’d be more pissed off that they took something off of my vehicle than not being able to walk at graduation. I’ve done it twice….it’s highly overrated. Having to sit there listening to some moron drone on about things that you don’t care about is a total waste of time. Just let the school district mail you the diploma, which they have to do!!

As far as slavery goes, it was on the way out anyways. In the next few years, the Cotton Gin, followed by the Combine, would have made slavery obsolete.

The second biggest lie in US history is that the civil war was fought over slavery. Even Lincoln himself said it was not over slavery. The southern states were getting screwed at every turn and wanted out of “union” so they could govern themselves. Actually, that’s one of the common misconceptions. If anybody was going to face the wrath of Southerners for actions like this principal, it wouldn’t matter what color his skin was. Southerners don’t dislike black people. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people have no clue about or pride in their heritage and more than likely, the same uneducated type of people that support his actions, would support it in Georgia or Louisiana. It’s all about being ‘tolerant’ and showing ‘compassion’ to anyone of any color or type that might be offended by anything. It’s pretty shameful when the zest for that exposes one’s limited education.

I am proudly from the South and know of no white people who think of the Confederate flag as a symbol of slavery! It is purely a symbol of southern heritage, nothing more. Why is it that only recently, in this current “generation” of black people, do they find the flag to be a symbol of slavery and a noose to be a symbol as well?

Just a couple of quick questions… If the war started in 1861 and it was all about slavery, how come it took Lincoln until 1862 to declare freedom for slaves in the Confederate states? How come it only pertained to states that wouldn’t come back under Union control but allowed it to remain legal in any state that did return to the Union? How come Lincoln allowed slavery to remain legal in Union states and Southern states that were Union friendly? How come slavery wasn’t actually declared illegal until the 13th amendment to the Constitution was ratified in 1865?

But I would say off the top of my head that the only reason Slavery wasn’t already illegal is because the Federal Government did not have the power in reality to outlaw it in every state. Once the war started there was no need to play politics anymore. And just because the Emancipation Proclamation came after the South attacking the U.S.A. doesn’t negate my point.

That would be a guess at the first question.

As for the other questions, I believe you know what you are talking about. I would answer that when you are war you have to do what it takes to win.

The death of slavery was the only good thing to come out of that war, but that was not for what it was fought.

Thanks for the civil reply. They’re hard to find online.lol As far as the Federal gov not having the power to outlaw it, the constitutional amendment could have been written at any time before the war started. The reason that the North had begun to move away from slavery was because they didn’t need it anymore. Their economy was based more on industrial work, whereas the south was almost fully reliant on agriculture. The north was moving away from the slavery that they had always used and instead, where making full use of the wage/slave and indentured servant systems. There really isn’t a whole lot of difference in the chattel slavery that was banned by the 13th amendment and wage slavery.

Slavery was causing a divide but it was already on it’s way out. It was just a matter of survival for the South. Everything they had going for them was agriculture and it needed workers. This is the reason that Lincoln made his Proclamation. He knew that if the South didn’t have anybody to fuel their economy, they couldn’t finance their war efforts.

As far as your question, there actually weren’t many ‘rich Southerners’ that owned slaves. The people that fought for the Confederacy weren’t fighting for a few rich guys that owned people, they were fighting for their own survival and they were fighting for their states. In today’s world we fight for America but then, they fought for their states and in addition to the survival of their economy, they were fighting against a federal government that was beginning to increase it’s powers. State’s rights were a big thing back then and the South wasn’t happy about Northern plans to institute a federal tariff that would help Northern manufacturers but would hurt the South’s cotton industry. The north also wanted federal subsidies for shipping and internal improvements that heavily favored northern states and would have done little for southern states. There are other reasons for their secession but basically it all started with the fact that Southerners felt that the Federal Government was overstepping it’s boundaries and since people at that time were still aware that the Constitution limited the federal government to only a few ‘expressed powers’, they didn’t want to be a part of what they felt the country was turning into.

I would only add that in some states there were no slaves or in some cases only a handful.

It is my assertion that since the founding of the republic that is was a moral consideration and not a financial one.

There were people who did not want to join a union with states that held slaves.

I understand about the tariffs.

I hate using stats, but if you look at the stats most slaves were concentrated on the bigger plantations.

I agree with the students right to fly the flag. I think they slipped up when they flew it on State property, meaning the school grounds, don’t know.

I really started commenting here because I wanted to learn and see what people had to say about the issue.

I think folks are generally misled on this subject.

But I guess it comes down to how interpret history and how much morality and judgment you ascribe to people of the 19th century.

I think they all knew right from wrong but chose eve-ill over good.

I agree with your stat comment about most of the slaves being on the larger plantations which is why I have a problem with the mindless people that apparently think that everybody in the South was lazy and ‘owned’ ten slaves that did all of their work. That’s why I contend that while I’m sure there were people in the Confederate army that didn’t like black people, most of them weren’t giving up their lives because they loved slavery and fought just so that their rich neighbors could keep their personal bank accounts full.

At first I thought you were one of those ‘haters’ that jumped on things like this but decided that you were just fishing for responses and you actually seem like a well educated, decent person. Ya know, it’s mean to antagonize all the folks that know so little about the subject and our history, in general. lol
