Good job officer! Camerman seemed like a real Dud!

nic   May 30th, 2008 - 8:25 am

Hopefully they will fire the chicken$hit redneck cop.

libsukbad   May 30th, 2008 - 8:55 am

50 grand for a stupid camera? what a ripoff!!!!
Both parties were wrong, yet another cop feeling “disrespected” and a metrosexual sounding tool of a photographer looking for his big break by being basically, a tool.

Brother Russell   May 30th, 2008 - 8:58 am

The photographer may have been a typical news jerk who thinks he is entitled to V.I.P. treatment by cops just because he is from the local news affiliate. But by the same token, if an immature cop who can’t control his temper will do this to a news photographer holding a camera, what would this same cop do to you or one of your loved ones when there are no cameras around? Think about it. This fair and balanced comment brought to you by Brother Russell.

Ty   May 30th, 2008 - 9:10 am

I cant believe anyone on here would defend the cop. We all need to remember cops are NOT above the law. They follow the law just like we are to do. Way too many times anymore cops think they can do or say whatever they want. I need anyone of you that thinks the camera man is in the wrong to explain exactly what he was in the wrong for. Talking down to a cop isnt breaking the law. When cops start showing the public respect then they dont derserve any either. Hell, I huess its ok to say that the cop should have shot him uh Jimbo?

Ralph   May 30th, 2008 - 9:34 am

Am I the only one who heard the part about how these cops had just been in a shootout?!? These officers had just gone through the stress of possibly having to take someone’s life, or losing their own, and here comes this weasle of a cameraman asking for name and badge number, and giving the officer attitude. I am sick of the media becoming the news, and they always have the same line: “the people have a right to know”, but that is BS, that is not what they believe, what they really believe is; I have the right to get this story, so my ratings and salary can go up.

These cops make about $40,000.00 a year to place targets on their chests in the shape of a badge, and because of that they deserve your respect. And if you cannot respect police, I hope the next time you need one, they are too busy giving lengthy and polite explanations to a TV cameraman.

piper   May 30th, 2008 - 9:40 am

TY, it is so evident what was happening and yet is as if you are not watching the same video. The “VIDEOMAN” was rolling tape of an uneventful scene wasting tape for no reason then to intice the policemen who had just secured a gunshot scene. It wasn’t playtime. I don’t care what a media person is entitled to. We all know how obnoxious they are and how THEY think they are “above the law” as well. The policeman had clearly calmed down and given the man his answer when the officer felt like it. Plain and simple!!!! AND in that regard, he had every right to do just that. I am not a policeman. I am not related to one and I don’t even know one, BUT I do know that when you respect any person they will respect you back. It works that way in all walks of life. So please get over the whole American Saga of ” OH…DEAR…THE POLICE ARE SO BAD AND MEAN.” Follow the law and when you break it, expect to be handled with force. And in this case, Wait patiently for your answer and when given it, say thank you and move on. Or just be a little wise ass with a sarcastic impatient comeback and expect to arrested.

Stan   May 30th, 2008 - 9:41 am

Notice how they didn’t show you the FIRST interaction the cameraman had with the cop. My guess is they cut out the first bit, when the cameraman walked up on the cops not knowing what was going on, because he came off like and ass when he talked to them.

That doesn’t mean the cop was right, it means they didn’t bother to show you what the guy did to get the cop hot to begin with.

Jimbo   May 30th, 2008 - 9:44 am

“Talking down to a cop isnt breaking the law. ”

Wise move, punk, jerk the chain, then whine when the dog bites. The cop was wrong, the punk “talking down” should have been taken care of once the camera was stored.

James Blish   May 30th, 2008 - 9:44 am

Bad Cop and stupid camera guy. I wonder what would have happened if there were no camera filming? We all know what would happen. 8(

Dave M   May 30th, 2008 - 10:02 am

fire the out of control cop . before he hurts someone. end of story

piper   May 30th, 2008 - 10:15 am

OR….we could just fire every cop because they may hurt someone. Especially if provoked.

666independent   May 30th, 2008 - 10:40 am

I agree with DaveM…..fire out of control cop….just watching the cop it looks like he is looking to bust this guys camera…..

Matthew   May 30th, 2008 - 10:43 am

Ralph is correct.

Look into this in context, these police officers are in a sick modern society (just being shot at), where there is no regard for human life or morals anymore. This cameraman received his directions where to go, but proceeds to provoke the policeman to anger, wanting a story. Throw the guy in jail longer for impeding justice and failure to comply with a police officer.

Do you know what i learned as a child: when a policeman asks you to do something, do it, don’t ask questions…

The media thinks they have “special” rights, but with bloggers and everything else, what constitutes media?

Ramona   May 30th, 2008 - 11:51 am

Teach someone to react with force, he’ll find a reason to do it. A decent human being would’ve let the whole thing drop. Then again, a decent human being probably wouldn’t have the urge to beat up on people, and therefore wouldn’t become a policeman.

Bobo   May 30th, 2008 - 12:18 pm

If you’re attacking the cop, you’re scum. The cameraman mouthed off and didn’t follow instructions.

John   May 30th, 2008 - 12:32 pm

Cop was right, Cameraman thinks that having a camera
gives him special rights, it was a crime scene and he should do as he was told enough said.

Bad Cops   May 30th, 2008 - 12:42 pm

Ralph and Matthew, you complete overlook the fact that they CHOSE to be cops. No one forced them to be. Whether it is out of a legitimate desire to help people, a power trip, or the love of a handgun or adrenaline, they chose to be cop. The fact that they entered a dangerous line of work does imply that they can use “dangerous line of work” as an excuse for abusing their position. There are plenty of cops who would have handled this situation appropriately, and this cop has done them a disservice.

Bad Cops Edit   May 30th, 2008 - 12:44 pm

Hope I can this in before I get flamed :)

The fact that they entered a dangerous line of work does NOT imply that they can use “dangerous line of work” as an excuse for abusing their position.

Sean   May 30th, 2008 - 1:05 pm

Everyone has a limit. The cameraman was dead set at making sure that cop reached his limit.

The cop acted badly but understandably

You give exceptions, on a case by case basis, to people who perform a “dangerous line of work”. There are exceptions to everything.

Prosecute   May 30th, 2008 - 1:15 pm

The cop broke the law — assault and battery. He needs to do time. He is a cheap thug.

Eric   May 30th, 2008 - 1:26 pm

What a bunch of crap. Those saying the cop had any right to do that are flat out crazy. Police officers are not above the law and can’t assault someone for hurting their feelings. The guy, jerk or not, was putting his camera away and got jumped. People say if the camera did the crime he should pay, but HE DIDN’T DO ANYTHING ILLEGAL!

C. Rakish Spagaletto   May 30th, 2008 - 2:21 pm

The wittle coppies don’t wike it when we film them. But they like to film and record us. Screw the pigs.

Mimi   May 30th, 2008 - 2:25 pm

The officer should get a commendation. Clearing human debris from a crime scene…

Chuckl8   May 30th, 2008 - 3:26 pm

You right-winger apologists for everyone who wears a uniform and has a badge is pathetic and childish in the extreme.

What is a cop? He or she is someone just like you or me, who maybe got some basic training, took an oath, was given a uniform and a gun, and turned loose on the streets. Nothing magical about it. They can be just as good, or just as bad, as the rest of us.

Quite assuming they have some spiritual powers that make them infallible.

Huggles   May 30th, 2008 - 3:38 pm

I suppose when bent police are not setting up organized stalking networks in neighborhoods they worry news cameramen. In a way it is good and maybe the media will start disclosing the harassment and stalking of law abiding citizens by ultra right wing police officers.

gabe   May 30th, 2008 - 4:40 pm

all of you that think the camer man was in the wrong. you need to get with the program, and read the bill of rights. i believe that cop just violated the first amendment, and should lose his job. or at least be put on traffic duty forever.

Smegolicious   May 30th, 2008 - 4:45 pm

I feel sick reading support for this cop.

I do realize he was sneaking off the camera so YOU and I could not see him breaking the law, don’t you?

We hired him for LAW ENFORCEMENT and he is VIOLATING THE LAW. That doesn’t bother you?

He has a constitutional right to film the cop, the cop doesn’t have a constitutional right to sneak off camera and assault him.

For the first time ever, i now see why the media spins things. You supporters of the cop are so militant about being told what to do, you also need to be told what to think.

Derek   May 30th, 2008 - 4:52 pm

It doesn’t matter what the cameraman said to the cop. The cop had no right to attack him the way he did, period. Speaking to a cop in a way they don’t like doesn’t give them the right to attack or arrest you. He wasn’t hurting anyone or anything by filming. The way it sounded from their interaction there, the cop had probably given HIM an attitude when he initially showed up. If they just told him to go to the media staging area but didn’t tell him where that was, what do they expect?

The guy gave the cop an attitude when he finally told him where it was, but that doesn’t excuse the cop’s behavior. The problem is that in this country cops get away with crap like this all the time and are never held accountable for their actions. If a private citizen ever tries to defend themselves against this abuse, they are automatically guilty of resisting arrest regardless of whether there was even a reason for the arrest in the first place.

I don’t blame him for asking for the cop’s name and badge number. More people need to voice complaints against cops so maybe eventually things will be fixed. Or heck, maybe more people need to defend themselves with force against the abusive cops. Yeah, they’ll almost definitely lose their case and be punished severely, but maybe if enough cops suffer the consequences of abusing the public they’ll collectively learn their lesson.

GF   May 30th, 2008 - 4:54 pm

It’s a wash. I use to work in live local news and we would never taunt an officer like this, if there was a problem we knew what public relations officer to call. The officer did step over the line but the camera man should have thanked him for the information and went on his merry way.

These camera’s cost $50,000+ for a reason, the images and audio are far superior to that of a camcorder that you buy at Walmart and they provide professional features that I’m sure you would have no idea how to use. They use lenses that cost anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000. Lenses are what break in a scuffle like this. The main camera body is metal and probably would not get damaged, although the sensitive electronics and tape transports inside might.

CopsSaddamssIalmicBalls   May 30th, 2008 - 5:42 pm

Civil rights violation of the first amendment. Lawsuit. Fire the pig. Long may the Founding Fathers (FF) be remembered. Long live the constitution. Death to stupid pigs that will not follow the laws of the FF.

Bobo   May 30th, 2008 - 7:50 pm

I’ll say it yet again. If you think the cop was the bad guy, then you’re scum. Period. I don’t debate scum, because you’re not smart enough.

John   May 30th, 2008 - 9:43 pm

The officer needs to be dismissed. He clearly can’t handle the job. Anyone who believes that this sort of a response is justified needs to think about how this officer behaves when a camera isn’t there to capture his actions. If the officer wants to act like a prison guard, give him a job in a jail.

Jib Halyard   May 30th, 2008 - 9:48 pm

Bobo. The cameraman was a member of the public, and was not committing a crime. The cop is a servant of the public. If you can’t understand this simple concept, maybe you should go live in Iran or Zimbabwe or somwehwere like that. You are scum and do not deserve to live in America.

Derek   May 31st, 2008 - 2:40 am

Bobo…sweet response. Definitely showed a lot of maturity and confidence in your side of the argument.

Sivart   May 31st, 2008 - 2:43 am

The cop was wrong.
The cop was probably stressed due to the shooting.
The cameraman should press charges.
If it had been the other way around, no doubt the cops would press charges.

The cop was way out of line.

Reasons like this is why states should raise the minimum requirements for being a being police office to a 4yr degree or equivalent in said field of work across the board. Then there would be greater chance we’d have more intelligent/responsible public servants performing their duties properly and
professionally; not this street thug “tit for tat” mentality we have here.

Carigis   May 31st, 2008 - 3:50 am

I agree.. or at least a 2 year degree. I think the LAPD’s ads state that they take anyone… must have no major felonies, be a US citizen OR “at least have applied for citizenship”.. that means you can be a non citizen policing a citizen.. kinda scary

Humphrey Cheung   May 31st, 2008 - 4:00 am

Um no, you need to be a citizen by the time you are sworn in. That means you can go through the hiring process and academy while processing for naturalization.

It can take years to get certified for the LAPD academy (and many others like the CHP) and then its 6+ months to go through the Academy.

Get your facts straight before spouting off.

iHips   May 31st, 2008 - 5:17 am

For everyone defending the cop. What video were you watching, yes i agree that the camera man may have been rude, and maybe even annoying but the cop has no right to act out in such a rage. Let’s face it most of out there have been rude to someone doing there job before, it might have been at a fast food restaurant or at a department store. So assuming you say that the cop was in his right, i would assume that by you being rude to the fast food guy, that he had the right to spit in your burger, or some other nasty thing. Or for you who were rude to that poor girl at the department store, i guess she had the right to take the clothes rack and beat you with it, or maybe even grab a mannequin’s leg and shove it where the sun don’t shine.

I believe in respecting cops, i do. But unfortunately there are a few bad apples out there. Unfortunately they give all of the other good cops bad names. I have friends and family members that are cops and even they have said that this is out of control cop. Most cops would have told him that he needed to vacate the area immediately or that they would have to arrest him. Not go and beat the guy down.

Copisbad   May 31st, 2008 - 6:12 am

If the cameraman didn’t have his camera, the police officer will arrest him a press charges of criminal threat, and put the cameraman on a 5150 hold, I don’t think there’ll be any evidence to back the cameraman. Thank goodness we are free to camera police officers in public streets, otherwise we’ll be in a police state.

The cop has no right to get close to the cameraman nor to his vehicle because he’s not doing anything wrong and there’s no probable cause for the cop to approach. In fact based on the video the cop assaults the cameraman and force him to let go of his camera.

These videos are good to encourage police staffs to improve their conduct. I’ve seen so many bad cops who believe when they have a badge they are above the law as if they were given the right to abuse the people.

No one is above the law.

John thomas   May 31st, 2008 - 6:54 am

Wow, excellent job camera dude. I hope this scumbag cop gets what he has coming to him. Losers like this are exactly why more cops are getting shot.

Well humpfry you may be right.. but I still should not have to worry about some iraqi who worked “differently” as a cop in baghdad and was allowed here because of circumstance only to police american citizens six months later.. you should have to be a natural born citizen pnly allowed to police the populice… some countries.. the culture is a little.. well different. like mexico for instance where just about every cop takes bribes snd has no problem setting you up to get you to offer a bribe…trust me.. Further proof we are living in a police state.

carigis   May 31st, 2008 - 9:43 am

a little off the subject.. but the real problem is women police officers.. I mean what a waste if taxpayer money. The FBI only requires women to score about 2/3 in physical qualification then men do.. that means they only need to run 2/3 as fast. like the criminal is going to say.. hey she’s a woman I should wait up…

I notice when ever Im pulled over by a woman 2 male officers need to show up to “help” out, where otherwise it would only require one officer. Its kinda like in war.. always better to wound the enemy then kill them… as a wounded enemy takes several other soldiers off the field to try help him where with a dead one, the rest can just keep fighting.

all having a woman police officer does is take another 2 officers off the field everytime a call comes out.. same effect.. your paying full salary for 1/3 to 1/2 an officer.. who is not physically fit enough (in most cases) to take down a grown man on her own, or even to keep up (hence why the fbi requirements are lower…I mean they even give them a block to use to scale the wall…)

whats next ..we allow midgets in too in the name of being politically correct because they WANT to be a police officer. used to be the day that most police departments had strict height and weight requirements to join…sad

PauPer   May 31st, 2008 - 9:52 am

why are police unions so against GPS Badge Cams, Dash cams & Gun cams ? …because cops break more laws than average people. Cops that cant handle the stress of their job are unprofessional. Peace Out

Joe   May 31st, 2008 - 10:19 am

You guys have to remember this is a VERY biased story. It is presented entirely from the viewpoint of the media. It may be “unedited footage” but that doesn’t mean it’s ALL of the footage. The camera man’s tone was rude and the police officer’s emotional state most likely has been broken down by the shooting that just occurred. Incidents like these happen all the time after a shooting. Police officers are human too and are just as vulnerable to emotional trauma as any of us are. You tell me if you would want some cameraman in your face taunting you after you may have narrowly missed losing your life?

While the cop was out of line in making physical contact with the cameraman, I think it is at least somewhat understandable considering the circumstances.

Also, it’s important to remember that sudden motions and sounds can be exaggerated by the camera. In other words, the scuffle may have had a lot less “attack” to it than it seems. We can’t judge what happened by watching the ground jerk around on the screen. I think it’s unfair and unprofessional of this news channel to air something like this, especially because it makes their cameramen staff look bad by taunting the cops.

Fire the cop.

Wow   May 31st, 2008 - 10:42 am

Wow… that cop was completely at fault and attacked the photographer WITHOUT justification. For whatever reason, he was annoyed by the camera, annoyed by someone telling him what to do, annoyed by even the slightest bit of “attitude”, he circled around like a shark, tried to get behind his target and then cowardly attacked.

That guy is disgrace to all police officers. He’s a public menace and should be immediately FIRED. We don’t need police on the streets who can’t handle the stress of dealing with a photographer and who respond to every situation with violence.

Dug Fresh   May 31st, 2008 - 10:57 am

The officer comes over gives directions and at that point the guy should have said “thank you.” Instead he acts like a real ELB [expletive left blank.] Now granted, that doesn’t justify the cop’s behavior but sometimes an expletive gets what he deserves. It doesn’t make it right but it doesn’t mean the guy probably didn’t deserve it either…

And to Ty, who wrote: “We all need to remember cops are NOT above the law…” we should also remember they are not above being human either. Again, it doesn’t justify anyone’s behavior but just perhaps if the guy with the camera showed just a tiny bit of respect for what was likely a difficult situation, then it is quite reasonable to suspect that whole incident could have been avoided. Sadly for the cop who was just as much a victim here, the photographer not only did not want to avoid this situation, he welcomed and provoked it for his own profit and self-aggrandizement. He is not to be made a hero here for his motives were base and unworthy of applause.

Perhaps next time the cameraman will say thank you.

Artemis   May 31st, 2008 - 11:23 am

Cops choose to be cops because they have psychological problems. They have an inner need to belittle and overpower. This guy couldn’t handle someone asking for his name and badge number – a mild annoyance – and instead chose to physically assault the man. If I physically assaulted everyone that annoyed me with dumb questions, I would have my own run-ins with Officer Friendly. Bottom line: cops are useless weasels working out their own inner demons while hiding behind a badge and a uniform.

Those of you who are ignorant enough to support unlawful abuses of power such as this will be the first to be rounded up by paramilitary forces under martial law in the coming years. Because it’ll be easy. You’re ignorant, docile and passive in the face of tyranny and you know what? You’ll deserve exactly what you’re going to get.

This guy was a total jerk. He should be fired. Cops abusing their authority should be let go ASAP. The public should be able to film police whenever we want while they are on duty. They film us hundreds of times daily!

Ralph   May 31st, 2008 - 2:39 pm

I love how cops can use “he had a smart mouth” as an excuse to physically attack a civilian. We need to have better psych screenings for these pigs. Cops only become cops because they know they’ll have power to abuse. We need some real men as police officers today. Whatever happened to cops walking a beat. I never see a cop out of his car unless he’s giving a ticket, they are completely out of touch with the general public and act like we are the enemy. I’ve even seen a copper on the side of the road playing solitaire on their in car laptop or returning movies to the video store while on duty. WHAT ARE WE PAYING YOU FOR?

Why should people automatically have to politely submit to any directions given by an officer? If the cop blew him off and gave him attitude before (much later) answering his question, why shouldn’t the guy give the cop attitude. As for someone being a jerk and getting what he deserved, maybe the cameraman should have tasered or shot the cop in self defense when the officer attacked him. I still say if more people forcefully defended themselves against police brutality and abuse of power, we might actually see that sort of thing happening less frequently.

If a police officer needs to get violent when dealing with innocent people, maybe he should get a different job.

i gotta deal with crap at my job too, but i don’t hit people because of words they say.

that was premeditated assault and the officer should be charged with the crime he committed. that.

Matt   May 31st, 2008 - 6:17 pm

To reverse it all, if the policeman had been somewhere he shouldnt have (unofficially), nothing would have happened. If a cameraman had violently assaulted someone he would be fired and jailed. Violent felonies disallow gun ownership. The policeman should be fired, jailed and due to his flagrant violent assault barred from ever owning a firearm again. Since we know they will play pattycake and give him a pass, perhaps next time he will pick a more masculine subject to assault and get whats due him. He is a disgrace to all LEO.

Sarah   May 31st, 2008 - 9:16 pm

OK …..I was a news cameraman years ago. News cameramen and cops will likely get along together well if each one respects the other.
Did I not hear the anchorman say that the officer told the photog to go to the media area to be briefed about the shooting…yes he was told that ,which was an order from a police official….he didn’t leave the scene…stupid move on the photogs part…
He was given a direct order from a cop to leave a highly volatile area….why? because the cop will get in serious trouble for not keeping people back….what if the cameraman got hit by a stray bullet…..bad mark on the cops work history for not clearing the area which they are told to do……..

the camera guy should’ve packed it up and moved down the street further….. if he would’ve done that then the cop would have been nice later on and at the next shooting he probably would’ve let the camera guy in for better coverage of the story…..that’s how it worked for me.

I’m not really on any side hear just telling you how it is on the street as a news photographer….

I would also say the cop was taunted by the camera guy …and shining a light in his eyes at night like that will blind you …..

cops deal with alot of BS everyday stuff we don’t see or want to put up with ourselves….then you get peewee herman with a camera egging the cop on…..

Sarah   May 31st, 2008 - 10:03 pm

When the camera guy mouthed off at the JBT is when action sould have been taken.Instead, the cop circles the victim for a minute or two, clearly waiting for the camera to be turned off or put down before attacking him.It was an assault. No bullets were flying, the only danger to the public was the cop,an armed thug.

Thevolleyballman   May 31st, 2008 - 10:20 pm

Since when do Cops try to sneak around to your blind side and try to take you down? And can’t even do that right!

A lot of interesting comments here. My opinion is that the officer may have been under stressful conditions due to the shootout, but that does not justify attacking the photographer. They are trained and paid to do a job and that does not include going into a rage because of any situation. That may just be a natural human reaction, but it’s not acceptable. If he (the officer) cannot cope with the situation and remain professional then he should not be a police officer. I think a good solution here would be some unpaid time-off and counseling for the officer along with a public apology to the photographer and the news station. No lawsuit is necessary. Oh, and the officer (not the police department) should be responsible for any medical bills or damaged equipment. Just my two nickels worth.

Joe Chip   May 31st, 2008 - 11:13 pm

Good grief. I’m flabbergasted that anyone would stand up for the police officer in this situation.
This cop is a thug who gives legit cops a bad name.

You forget that the police are employed by YOU, the taxpayer. They work for YOU, the citizen. They have no right to attack, assault or abuse someone who is not breaking the law. They are law enforcers and those who act like thugs and bullies make the job that much harder for sane, professional people in their line of work. This officer should be taken off our streets until he can do his job without abusing his employers.

WOW!   June 1st, 2008 - 3:58 am

All i can say is that most of you that are anti cop, and saying f the police need to pull your head out of your @ss…

these cops just were involved in a shooting while protecting your dumb unthankful @sses and possibly could’ve lost their life. They are going through a critical time.

you all would do the same thing, these cops go through rigorous background checks and psychological interviews and exams to get the position they have. they went through hell and back so they can protect the streets and your loved ones.

so do yourselves a favor… shut the hell up and stop whining about how piss poor the police officer did his job, the officer did his job properly.

keith   June 1st, 2008 - 7:33 am

Yes,i agree, they both are probably jerks, but one has arresting powers, and a ego bent toward physical confrintation.Policing citizens is a big responsibility that requires that you sometimes take the high road ,and walk away, not attack.

Max Roswell   June 1st, 2008 - 10:12 am

Who watches the watchers? According to the APD, nobody.

And to the poster who said, “I learned as a child to do what the policeman says, no questions asked,” you learned your lesson well, bootlicker.

CAMERAMAN: Was that so hard

COP: Sir move to the indicated location or you will be arrested

CAMERAMAN: Was that so hard

COP: Sir if you do not move as indicated now you will be arrested

CAMERAMAN: Bla bla bla

COP: Sir I am going to arrest you now. You are under arrest

That’s is one nasty mexican cop. Send him back to Guadalajara.

Sarah   June 1st, 2008 - 3:15 pm

WOW said “…these cops go through rigorous background checks and psychological interviews and exams to get the position they have”.If you mean their fingerprints are run by FBI,you’re correct. And the police aren’t here to protect us,they’re here to write up the report after the crime has occured. The Supreme Court handed down a ruling several years ago that affirmed law enforcement has NO obligation to protect the public.

Amazing how so many loosers have no trouble sassing and back talking a cop….guess that makes them feel like real he-men. Cause they know if they did the same to anyone but a cop, they’d be lucky to have only a broken camera.

Travis   June 2nd, 2008 - 2:50 pm

WTF! Is there an entire battalion of cops that just sit online and defend this behavior? I don’t see ANYTHING that remotely suggests that this pig was within his rights to do this.

rick   June 2nd, 2008 - 5:32 pm

Not a battalion of cops Travis, just more citizens who abide and respect the law and those who enforce it.
Why more? Cause natural selection has done a pretty good job of eliminating all the deadbeats.

Mike   June 2nd, 2008 - 5:33 pm

Ooh, good job Officer Scumbag! You’re so tough, you’re such a MAN for assaulting someone from the side! Guess this explains why APD cruisers have TWO people in them – because you need a Grade 10 education to be an APD cop.

jIM   June 3rd, 2008 - 5:42 am

I am sorry, but ANYONE who excuses a cop’s abusive actions because of job stress is insane.

Yes… cops are people too, ut they are trained to not lose control, to NOT be thinskinned & take offense at a percieved slight.

I have seen this video over & over. I have also read the police report. In the report the officer said that he told the cameraman where the satging area was before the cameraman moved off & set up down the street. IF this is true…. then why did the camera man say something to the effect of “was that so hard?” (apparrently the officer finally told him where the staging area was as he walked up on him filming). Then the cameraman asked for his name & badge # (cops are supposed to provide it when asked). Then the cop decided he was going to teach this guy a lesson…. he started stalking around the cameraman like a pit bull looking for an opening to strike…. perhaps to get out of view of the camera before he did…. this understandibly worried the camera man so much so that he decided to keep the camera rolling & told the officer he wasnt going to put the camera down. He felt threatened. Also…. when an officer is going to place someone under arrest who is not violent or showing no signs of theatening behavior….. he is supposed to verbally warn the man. For example…. “put down your camera , you are under arrest”… etc. etc. He did no such thing. He skirted around looking for an opening to just pounce on the guy.

This rookie cop made some seriosu mistakes. And IMO cant control himself to where he poses a danger to others. He shouldnt be a cop.

Josh   June 3rd, 2008 - 10:58 pm

I am astonished by the comments on this page in support of the police actions. First of all there is nothing you can say to a cop that justifies physical actions by the police unless it is a direct threat to the officers. They are paid to not over-react. Second of all the camera guy did not break any law what-so-ever. It is the first amendment guarantee in our constitution to have a free press – period. Not when the police feel like letting us. The concepts are mutually exclusive – you can’t have free press if it is being subjected to police permission. The camera man had every right to be at the location filming – no ifs ands or buts. If the police really did want him to go to the designated press area then they needed to tell him where it was immediately. I am tired of cops thinking they own the universe simply because no one stands up to them. They should be fired and the camera man should press charges for assault. Afterall, its all on camera!

fire the cop   June 4th, 2008 - 3:39 am

That cop is a petty criminal wearing a uniform. He says nothing to the cameraman. Stalks him and then proceeds to pounce on him when his back is turned, like a petty thug. This cop has no honor and the temper of a 15 year old. This should make you ashamed not proud of your police force. The cameraman was obviously no threat.

For all you who say, he was mouthin off he had it comin. The cop is on duty and regardless of personal feelings he is on the job and needs to respect that responsibility. Their job is to protect and serve. That cop was doing neither.

I see deprivation of the civil right to due
process per ministerial act. Title 82 of the
U.S. Code says that is tortious and provides
triple indemnification as well as recovery of
ordinary/necessary expense incurred in pursuit
of redress.

What that means is that the camdude can make a
federal case out of it if he will.

Things have actually improved in Albuquerque
since I moved here in 1989–back then the APD
would have simply shot him and moved on.

AvangionQ   June 5th, 2008 - 4:41 pm

Nothing less than the firing of this officer, followed by criminal assault charges, will suffice … then, the officer’s partner must be reprimanded, as the police department sees fit … I’m tired of seeing video of police officers breaking the law that they’re sworn to uphold — any officer caught doing so should either be reprimanded, fired or arrested, depending on the severity of the abuse — just like any other citizen would be, if caught committing the same offense …
